Yeah even if you don't have a max energy cap of 1000 you can use a leadership to go over 1000.

Kinda late but pretty sure even with leaderships the stage literally won’t allow you to play if your max energy is lower than the energy cost even with leaderships. Learned this when I tried unkept promises when I had 765 max energy
