As some folks have said, no need to take the junction box thing out but the OP had his reasons for doing so. But to just take the BCM, take off those two big-ass plugs at the bottom, just squeeze the tabs, no nut or bolt. Then, the 3 screws that are facing you that require a 10mm socket, remove those. Then, as he shows in the video, the 2 screws with the 8mm head, and then the one on the other side at the top. You'll need some extensions for that one and a flashlight but keep looking for it, it's there. Thank you OP for a great video, couldn't have done it without you.

Thanks for the helpful video. I just completed this task on a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan. I bought used BCM on Ebay but kept the fuse/relay panel. I made the mistake of disconnecing the face plugs. As noted in the previous comments, this is unnecessary. Anyway, a tip for getting them back on: install them and the plugs on the bottom before installing the assembly.

I think I may have a BCM faulty unit also as I have two problems one is minor in nature the other is CRITICAL. - - -THE MINOR PROBLEM - - - The minor problem deals with the overhead trip computer display. In one of the selections you will see dual display of MPGs. - - - Under normal conditions the left display shows AVG MPG, the right display shows INSTANTANEOUS MPGs, the next step shows INSTANTANEOUS MPGs by itself. - - - Now the problem, in the dual display step, the AVG MPGs display is blank but, has moved the display to the right into the INSTANTANEOUS MPGs position. Further, the next step displays INSTANTANEOUS MPGs is correctly displayed by itself. I changed out the display module to no avail the problem continues. - - - THE CRITICAL PROBLEM - - - The critical problem deals with "Daytime Running Lights (DRL) / Hazard - Turn Signals" integrated module, about $100 for this bit of technology. - - - Under normal conditions when the Light selector on the dash is set to the "Automatic" position, the DRLs work when the vehicle is in motion the head lights are on and if at night the head lights and other outside lights switch on. The Hazard - Turn Signals work by pressing the "HAZARD" button all turn signal light flash together. The turn signal works by moving the signal lever up for right turn and down for left turn. - - - Now the problem, intermittently the Hazard / Turn sSignals do not work. Checking fuses under the hood at the power distribution block indicate all fuses good. Some video postings suggest removing the DRL/Flasher module opening it up and re-soldering the solder joints to correct for possible cold solder joints during production. Based on this video and others I suspect a defective BCM. I'll keep you posted.

It was totally unessesary to remove the whole juntcion block, fuse block and relays and risk disaster of reconnecting all those connectors wrong. and 10 times the extra work. all you had to do is unbolt the junction block from the dash panel/firewall, lift it disconnect two cponnectors from the BCM, loosen the 4 screws holding the BCM to the junction block then slide it out. I can understand why you did that though. you wernt able to buy a BCM seperate from the Junction block so you went with replacing the whole unit combination.

Not hard to find. Check eBay, or your local auto salvage yard. These vans were made by the hundreds of thousands. Still plenty of them in junkyards. Buy two or three bcms and one will work for sure. Drivers side window does not go down, Passenger side only works somtimes. Heater blower motor needs kicked to work somtimes, Fuel gauage goes to empty then back to what its actually at and beeps low fuel ligt 35 times a minute. Oil light flashes at idle, Burns oil, Leaks oil, Water pump leaks slowly, Muffler rotted and replaced, Wipers only work on low or high no delay, heat and ac only work on high, Body is rotting, Paint is worse then a 1991 chevy, Vacum hoses are cracking and breaking, Exhaust leak at the manifold, headliner sunk, Power door locks on front doors shot.Transmission slips when super cold, Belt drive engineered with smooth idler and tensioner pulleys so everytime it rains the belt simply falls off and in some cases ruins the belt. A lot of the things you mentioned are basic maintenance. Hoses don't last 20 years. Neither do starters, alternators, brake lines, water pump. The belt you can replace with a upgraded tensioner. I fixed all the things you mentioned on my 1997 Dodge Caravan in the first year I had it (I paid $1200 for it initially), and once I got everything fixed in the first year, I drove it 40,000 miles in 3 years. The final straw for me was water leaking through the roof in the back and a colony of ants that made its home in the HVAC that I couldn't get rid of. So I sold it for $800 and bought a new Golf Sportwagen. The dodge caravan was a cheap ride that could haul a ton of stuff. No regrets.

Instrument cluster was out, odometer did not show any numbers, speedometer didn’t work, gauges would randomly work, interior lights such as doors and dome light would randomly work, windshield wipers would wiggle randomly. Dennis Fucci there is nothing to program but they keep the mileage of the junkyard car. So if you want the mileage programmed you need someone to do that for you. Might be worth it in your case since you have such low mileage. Bcm is about $40 at junkyard, but probably $150 to set the mileage. I did not program mine because I don't care about mileage. Get one and try it first before programming though in case you get a bad one.

The automatic door locks activate all by themselves within about 62 seconds of closing the doors, and continue to "lock" the door about every 20 seconds or so continuously. Only happens when the car is parked, with the engine off. When running, it does not try to lock the doors. Could this be BCM? 1998 Grand Caravan.Thanks
@rogerd45595 жыл бұрын
you could be right these chrysler vehicles all are plagued with BCM and instrument problems due to poor circuit board design according to you tube mechanics and my personal experience. If you can afford it replace the BCM, but I warn you its a nightmare to remove it. you have to be a contortionist. I think its easier to remove the engine then that monster XD

@rogerd45595 жыл бұрын
they are a terror to remove. is the nut disengaged from the stud? Maybe all those harness in the way are interfering? I did that top left connector last then was able to drop the whole BCM and Junction block down as one unit the manual states, you must disconnect the two lower connectors on the acual BCM on my van they are two white connectors push the tabs inward....careful they break off easy

I had some trouble with the face connectors. 3 of the 4 backed out as they should but the upper left would not come out on it's own even after the nut was completely loose. I had to carefully use a screwdriver to pry it slightly loose. Then it came out. Same troublr getting it back in. Took forever for the nut to engage the bolt. Those are all back in and now I have another problem. On my fuse panel the front connectors were all color coded so I didn't need to label them. However, the two bottom plugs looked as though they were only able to go one place each due to the length of their wiring. It took so long to get the new BCM that the wire hung loose and now seem to have enough length to fit on either side. Before they are plugged up I'd like to know which goes where. One comes from the floor and the other from overhead. Does anyone know which plugs where when looking at the BCM with it mounted in place?
@alanross83136 жыл бұрын
Looking towards the front of the van the overhead plug goes into the bottom right side of the BCM. If you have the junction block bolted to its mounting it is a tight squeeze to get the left hand plug inserted. Just pull the carpet out of the way and it will go in.
@rogerd45595 жыл бұрын
I believe the one from overhead goes on the left and the one from the floor is on the right not sure because I had the common sense to mark all my connectors before removing them

How did you take out the connectors from the fuse box? Ive been trying but they seem to be stuck, please Help
@CarsandCoding7 жыл бұрын
Luis Carlos Olmedo you have to turn out the bolt in the center of each connector, then they come off.
@luiscarlosolmedoxi7 жыл бұрын
So that bolts come out completely? Ive been trying to take them out with a wrench but in a certain step the bolt doesnt come out, It look like It is stripped because i continúe on turning with the wrench and never end. This happens with all the 4 connectors. Dont know if you can show a rear view of the connectors please too.
@CarsandCoding7 жыл бұрын
Luis Carlos Olmedo No they don't come all the way out, loosen all the way, then pull on the connector. If I remember correctly, I thought when I loosened the bolts it made the connector come off as I loosened them.

thank you man, i'll try out
@rogerd45595 жыл бұрын
My van may be different its a plymouth Voyager but you must remove the nuts first in the center of the connectors, then wiggle them out. but you dont have to remove the junction connectors if you are only after the BCM. Just lift the junction block up after disconnecting from the firewall, pop the connectors off the BCM remove the 4 screws to the bracket and slide out the bcm

is the gas gauge was not work before the new bcm ?
@CarsandCoding8 жыл бұрын
I can't remember, if it is only the gas guage that is bad then that is probably your fuel pump that has a problem. I had many problems, the speedometer did not work, none of the guages worked. Sometimes they would work but most times did not at all.

@CarsandCoding9 жыл бұрын
no, that is the transmission control module. Go to chryslerminivan.net the minivan fanclub forums to learn all about it
@rogerd45595 жыл бұрын
it can be any combination of malfuntions depending on what is not working in the BCM when a solder joint cracks in the unit, it may just take out the dash lights or horn or wipers, window motors maybe the transmission. as they said in the army, the best test for anything is substitution. if you can afford it lol

did you also had problem with the windshield wiper?
@CarsandCoding8 жыл бұрын
Julian Jauregui yes the windshield wiper would come on by itself and would only work on low and high. Not intermittent setting.
@ballhawk3874 жыл бұрын
I noticed the same thing, with occasionally wonky windshield wipers. That clues me in it's the BCM. Odd about the mileage changing, but I suppose that's where it's recorded. I can also see the scam potential if that change the milage with a lower mileage BCM. Hmmm...

Does the BCM on these vehicles need to be programmed by a dealership or someone with a programmer?
@CarsandCoding9 жыл бұрын
They dont have to be reprogrammed unless you want the mileage displayed to match what it was. The mileage will read whatever the donor car had on it.

@CarsandCoding8 жыл бұрын
could be bcm, pcm, or wiring. Cars are computers these days!
@rogerd45595 жыл бұрын
I suspect so! The body control module or BCM controls all those accessories and is a notorious failure on Dodge and Crysler, plymouth products due to crappy soldering proceedures on the BCM board, instrument panel ( lets hope not the ECM) that crack over time. its a built in failure to force you to buy another vehicle. all they had to do is go the extra mile and bolt the heavy componants down to the board, rather then rely on solder to hold them in place! If it were a Military componant board in an aircraft.. you damn well bet it would be done properly to keep their helicoptors from dropping out of the sky

Why did you have to replace the bcm?
@CarsandCoding10 жыл бұрын
The problems the bcm fixed for me were: instrument gauges didn't work, speedometer, tach, odometer, fuel guage, temp, windshield wipers didnt work on intermittent and key in ignition bell door open bell didn't work. Abs light was on. Replaced the bcm and everything works.
@Eeropolvasti9 жыл бұрын
+cuda2000 Isn't that a typical instrument cluster solder joint problem, sure sounds like it?? Are you sure, that was not a problem??/ Just wondering, after seeing so , so many guys just resoldering those couple solder joints, and everything works after !!=)And, by the way, it seems, 90 % of times, always beeing just behind main plug, left one on a bottom =)
@CarsandCoding9 жыл бұрын
+Eero Laukkanen Yes, sometimes the instrument cluster issue is a bad solder joint. I tried that, and replaced the cluster, and it didn't help. Replacing the bcm fixed all my problems and 15,000 Miles later no issues! Try the solder fix first.

OK, thanks! How much is that part? Any soldering involved changing it?? How long did it take you to change it? Must be very rare problem?? Thanks , youtheman
@CarsandCoding9 жыл бұрын
+Eero Laukkanen The bcm can be bought used on ebay or from a auto salvage yard. $50-$100. You can't buy it new. you have to get one from the same year van, with the same options that yours has. It is a common problem. I explain most of this in the video.
