to the people complaining about Jim Wych "snooker" pronunciation: maybe he doesn't say it correctly, but I wouldn't bash him so harshly, considering that he knows a thing or two about snooker. In fact he participated 4 times to World Snooker Championship, and was quarter finalist twice (1980 and 1992), beating players like John Pulman, Dennis Taylor and Willie Thorne.

I am unable to find efren's 15-ball rotation video. Could you provide a link? logically keeping control of snooker CB is easier, but it is LOGICAL. Big breaks in snooker need over 20 accurate positional shots using 1/4 table, because the red ball PACK is in the bottom half of the table. If you have a positional shot using the entire table, the break will stop at about 20 points.

"in pool you spin the cue ball, in snooker you do everything not to, you spin the cue ball when you have absolutely no choice, in snooker spinning the cue ball creates an unnatural angle..." - this guy speaks total bullshit. Cue ball control in snooker is so important that your spin on the cue ball is 10 times more important than pool. Of course in both sports you would try to make it so you play as many plain ball shots as possible. In pool this is far easier. Unless you snooker yourself in pool, no shot is particularly difficult. Play it from anywhere you'll probably get it if you're a good potter.

I haven't watched yet, but he sounds correct to me. In Snooker, the larger table means the slightest deviation of a balls path can have dire effects, and the chances of it happening are much higher in Snooker, though not so much a worry in pool.
@8ytan
@8ytan 9 жыл бұрын
+CloudysGuitarChannel You're right that a bigger table (and smaller balls) means there's a bigger deviation in the balls path. That's one of the reasons why spin is so important in snooker, though. The main reason for a snooker player to miss a pot is because they're too busy trying to screw back for their next shot, or run through and off the cushion to start clearing up on the other end of the table. What he said about spin on the cue ball being undesirable in snooker is actually, empirically wrong.

@@dhirajpallin2572 ....or maybe he puts what is needed because the shot requires it? .....or maybe, if one wanted to put "LESS SPIN" on average, I guess they would have to emphasize their pattern play more so, to create natural running angles that lend more toward the vertical axis side of the equation or god knows, that magic center cue ball that everyone prudent and wise speaks of, that maybe out of 1000 players per year, 1 accidentally hits dead center. I wonder if one day, center cue ball will be correctly taboo, unlike "spin". Every delivery in effect is spun and off center is a better target because i can always hit right or left of center, good luck hitting that vertical axis line that divides left and right every time.

You've gotta love the casual racism of the commentators' introduction where they start speculating about whether Wu speaks any English and whether he's even heard of his western opponent. The best part is that they don't even notice the level of ignorance they themselves are showing: two "professional" pool commentators freely admitting that they don't even know if their sport's world champion speaks English.

To all of those who claim that snooker players should stick to snooker: get your facts straight. The snooker champions who had a go at pool were very competitive (on world championship level) straight away, like Steven Davis, Mark Williams and now Ronnie O'Sullivan. The reverse transition (pool players showing up in the snooker world masters) has not been the case. O'Sullivan does give Wu a run for his money. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to draw some conclusions here...

Yes, the size of the ball and pockets is a problem. I use to play a snooker play from England in Baguio, Philippines. We keep coming out even and I had to play my best. Virgil Koon I think the English snooker player was teaching English at the Korean School in Baguio. I was also asked at 36000 peso a month.but it would interfere with my billiards! They removed my billiard hall there right after Manny, the world champ boxer bought the gym there. Sad as it was only 6 KM from where I was staying in the country. And I refer to my own: anyone with knowledge knows that each game has their own give and take in terms of difficulty. In snooker, the longer distance goes to speed control, a thing you adapt to when you play the game. You make it sound as if it's near impossible to play position in snooker and you don't even have to think in pool.

I agree. I have to be carefull how I say this now :P As a snooker player of 20 odd years and a 9-ball player of about 12 I do think that 9 ball has the element of luck to it, if the balls break well in 9-ball and it's a few shots to run out. Snooker requires a hell of a lot more game. You are 100% right though, the entry level for pro snooker is out of reach for some great players who just can't quite cross that "line" where 9-ball allows players more by the way of forgiving wide shots.

@lksong2041 I agree that safety play is a lot more difficult in 9 ball. However in snooker you have to play red, colour, red and so on. There's also the need to canon the reds when also trying to pot a coloured ball, whereas in 9 ball you break the balls at the beginning. The amount of spin and power that needs to be inflicted on the cue ball in order to canon the reds in such a way which spreads them well and doesn't leave you chineased in the middle of the pack is a lot more substantial.

@PeterOwen88 i wouldn't disagree that a snooker match can more easily identify the better player. for 9 ball players, they have to prove it through out their career. its like poker, there's a lot of luck involved, an amateur can beat a professional on any given day, but the professional will edge out int he long run. i would say 3 cushion billiards does a better job than snooker or 9 ball in eliminating the luck factor, would u agree?

But what you're failing to acknowledge is that classical guitar vs electric guitar is almost identical in terms of playing field. There are the obvious differences, but the topic we're talking about is drastically different in nearly every way except putting balls into pockets. Keeping concentration over longer because of table and pocket size? For starters, the bigger table isn't the worst part of the whole thing, neither is the pockets. Because of the table size, you have larger areas to play

Does anyone know why Ronnie's bridge hand was so much different to the way he bridges in snooker matches? Notice how he places his hand on the table with the middle and ring finger tucked in. What is the purpose of this when he spent his whole life bridging in a completely different way? Does it have something to do with the cue? I'm intrigued.

I'll give you one thing, shotmaking is difficult in snooker seeing as you have to judge more distance, but anyone that moves into pool recognizes that the balls roll differently, and playing position gets tighter. Try running high amounts in straight pool on a 9 foot table with 4.5 inch pockets. The avenues are alot tighter with much more "threading of the needle." By no means am I saying pool is tougher, but I AM saying that the games are each difficult in their own regard.
@batman30351
@batman30351 12 жыл бұрын
i think alot of people actually underestimate 9-ball. you can't say that snooker is "harder" than pool, the only thing that is more difficult in my opinion is mastering the accuracy needed. but positioning in 9-ball is actually alot more complex, many a time you would need inch perfect positioning if you want to have a smooth run, whereas in snooker it's mostly basic positioning, red colour red colour red colour, and the colours are on the same spots every time.

@sumon93 exactly! plus short races in 9 ball really don't mean that much either. the snooker format makes it a lot more consistent for the better player to win more consistently because there are so many balls in one game. if this match was played to say 20 racks or so, it would be a much more dominant game for Wu

@lemonite1 ...potting angle and still make a useful angle. In snooker, there is almost no room to pinch a pocket. If you don't believe me, try potting down the rail on a 9-ball table compared to a snooker table. It will tell you everything you need to know about just how precise 9-ball potting is. Again, let me reiterate: I'm not saying 9-ball is a bad game (I really enjoy playing it), but snooker definitely trumps it for difficulty. Why do you think so few pool players make the leap over?
@vincentwu5981
@vincentwu5981 13 жыл бұрын
@mrdarrencottam i would say though that snooker players transition easier to 9 ball, but the top 3 cushion players can very well play competitive 9 ball as well. the reason why few pool players transitioned to snooker is just that most of them don't have access to snooker tables or would have to go out of their way to practice. but i agree with u, respect both sports!

Let's have a comparison here. If what is being said is true, then A.) Small pockets mean more accuracy, B.) Bigger table means harder cueball control, and C.) Table size makes all the difference. Let's categorize a few things then. That would mean that English pool would fall in last with a tiny table, American pool would come next, then Snooker, and finally Russian billiards (considering the table is big, balls are big, and pockets are tiny).

Just want make clear i'm not saying ronnie isn't great, his natural ability at snooker and even at billiards in general is fantastic. How many players out there are world class using both their hands (right and left handed play), hes not even ambidextrous he just taught him self to play with both hands, he's a genius. But billiards comes in many different and quite specialized forms, no one person can possibly be the best at them all no matter who they are.

Snooker players are tremendous shot makers, but that doesn't constitute any degree of comparison when it comes to talent, knowledge, or prowess. Shotmaking won't get you out of every hole. Making long shots and aiming at a small hole is one thing, but when you're cheating the pocket (knowingly risking a miss) and forcing the cueball to go a certain direction for your next ball, there's no way to take any difficulty away from that.

The poor quality of this video encoding means the shots are near impossible to follow.

@lemonite1 Also, the best snooker players never take on 'difficult shots' - as you put it - because they are world class and their positional play is second to none. Losing position in snooker is a snowballing effect: you _just_ creep away from ideal position (say, the wrong side of the blue), and all of a sudden your position deteriorates on the next shot, and soon you are out of position entirely or missing a toughish pot. In 9-ball, the pockets are so big that you can be either side of the...

Ronnie was kicking ass when he was 14 so I doubt he was worried about a junior in high school.

These pockets must seem huge to Ronnie.

Can a specialist in snooker dominate in pool? Yes. Can a specialist in pool dominate in snooker? I don't think so. Whether you like it or not snooker is a harder game. The table is twice the size, the rules are harsher. If you're at the top at snooker, with a bit of table time you're at the top in pool. It doesn't work the other way round.

I love snooker elitists... Here's a piece of wisdom for you: In order to determine level of difficulty, you first need to determine a goal. The goal in all billiards is to beat your opponent. If something in the game itself is challenging, it's also challenging for your opponent and vice versa. Therefore the level of difficulty is not a quality in the game itself, but it is set by the skill level of your opponent.

Well I think the rules of pool are harsher depending on which game you play. Snooker is by far more mentally taxing!!!! But I'm not sure if you could just make such a blanket statement, that a specialist in snooker would dominate with more table time. I do agree with you about transitioning. I believe a snooker player would transition much more quickly but not necessarily dominate. A great example... google Steve Davis. Just because the table is twice the size doesn't just say yea it's easier. What people don't get is, the smaller the table the greater the traffic and the more you have to control the ball in a small area.

Can a snooker specialist dominate at pool? No. Especially not at 9 ball because nobody dominates at 9 ball, not even the best players in the world.

i think it still requires a lot of skill but the commentator needs to watch ronnie play snooker. saying something is luck and guesswork suggests he doesnt know the degree of control that is required in snooker. tho im sure transitioning feels alien when u spend 99% of ur time playing another game. personally i enjoy all the "cue" sports but i prefer snooker tho i mostly play 8 ball pool

"Can a specialist in snooker dominate in pool? Yes." Never seen one. It's just your opinion, not a fact.
