Efficiency tip: Normally these connections to the tank are all metal running from outside to the hot water on the inside. This obviously conducts heat very well and is a significant source of the heat loss from the tank. When your tank is hot, simply feel if the metal connectors on the outside are warm. If so, insulate the first 30cm or so of pipe and you'll keep your tank warm a lot longer. Especially since you've got 4 connections instead of the regular 2 on a domestic tank.

Alfi, Who needs the stinking instructions? Is the plastic ring enough to hold the tank in place during a rough sea? looks like to rocked a bit when the fittings were being tightened. I wonder if some sort of reinforcement near the top of the tank would help? Thanks for all your work in publishing the videos.
@lifeislikesailing

haha...yes we managed without reading them! lol I don't think the tank was secured during the clip you saw because it is fastened pretty good with the flange. Isotherm is my choice in marine water heaters. Much more efficient but costs a bit more. Measure twice, cut once. Also you could have taken the top off I bet of the heater and the outside would have bent a bit. There is a space with insulation between the inner and outer tank.

Nice one Alfy. Good tip on the sacrificial anode . Most know there's one for the engine but I was not aware of one in the hot tank! Mind you us Brits are a bit suspicious of all that hot water stuff, we must of caught it of the French sailors who are a bit adverse to washing........😉 Be interested if your plumber buddy sails that Bendytoy or just uses it as accommodation. .....do i smell a "match race" video? 😉

It sure was a good tip for the hot water tank! I also had no idea about the anode! My last sailboat didn't have a hot water tank or even pressurized water so it has been a real luxury having it with this boat. :) Although the boat is fairly new to him, I am sure Jon will be sailing his boat as much as he can this summer! :)

Very informative video Alfy. Just wondering, did you notice any rust staining in the hot water recently? I notice after the winter break, the first shot of hot water from my tank was rust stained, but then cleared up since. I'm thinking the tank may be failing. I would love to see your neighbour's benny.

Thanks and glad you enjoyed the video! I hadn't noticed any rust in the hot water, but then again I use the tank often since I liveaboard. My guess is if you are seeing rust in the water for the first shot of the season then you might be correct about it nearing the end of its life. :/

Is the hot water system available for use at sea, or only on shore? Do you feed the hot water system from fresh water tanks? Than would really have an effect on the fresh water supply. Nice video...nice neighbor.
@lifeislikesailing
@lifeislikesailing 8 жыл бұрын
The hot water tank is heated either by the electric element when I have shore power or by the heat exchanger when the engine is running. So the answer is yes I have hot water when I am away from the dock, but the water only heats up when I run the engine. It lasts approx one day before I run out of hot water in the tank. Also yes, the hot water comes from my fresh water tanks onboard.

Tankless heaters are typically heated by propane and if the flame extinguishes will create a fire/explosion hazard. For fun, see how your insurance company reacts to the idea.

Just like working on old cars, nothing is ever as straight forward as it should be. +1 for a tour of John's Beneteau :-)

Your electrical connection and cable , I believe, are in violation of the code. Your using romex instead of ac or mc and the cable is not secured by a clamp where it goes into the tank and in its journey to the tank, at least that wasn’t visible. Remember you can’t put romex in conduit. Your installation may hold up ,but..., who knows.. I would use thhn in plastic flex conduit. Enjoyed your video.

Great video! I particularly liked the "point of no return" :) Your cylinder totally had me flashing back to installing my un-vented cylinder in my home. Mine is a tiny bit bigger (furrie.net/sites/default/files/images/solar_thermal/250l_unvented_twin-coil_hot-water-cylinder.png) and there are 2 heating circuits; one for my now-little-used gas boiler; the other, for my solar hot water system solarhw.furrie.net:8014/dl2/live/data.svg #SolarFTW
