Great video! Just a suggestion, you might want to take those flare cartridges out of the package and put them in a zip lock or other waterproof container that is easy to open. When things get crazy and you need them it can be difficult getting them out of the original package.

Thank you! I found the other two safety equipment videos. Packing spare whistles on your boat was a great idea. I found an Amazon listing for bulk medal ones and they are on the way. I like the medal whistles because they are not crushed as easy as the plastic ones. May fair winds and dolphins accompany your every voyage.

In the states a book of the nave rules is also required. Also if you regularly have guest that are not familiar with the boat you might want to label the cabinets that have safety equipment in them. Also a drawing of the placement of all through hulls in a place that it will not be covered by anything.. So if you must stay on deck someone down below can locate the to check for water coming in through a through hull.

Great video and content! After many years of sailing, I am continually amazed and how many things some boat owners and sailors take for granted. Sometimes the simple exercise of reviewing the requirements exposes an important need. Additionally, I like the realistic looking weather. How did you do that? You must have had a huge hose to get that full marina rain effect! Fair Winds and Following Seas!

MNeilGri That sounds like a good size boat. I'm only 5'-8" so I didn't have that challenge when I was trying to find the right boat. Headroom always seems to be at the top of the list for comfort for sure! :)

nice video ... related to safety .. have you made a video about a ditch bag ? just an idea ... I know every sailor will have different ideas about what should be included ... would be interesting to see your list and that of others ... mine would be :- water + flashlight + flares + horn + small mirror + fish hook / spinner and line + knife + small bailer + plastic sheet to catch rain + hat + hand held vhf (if I have one) + ???

Thanks John! Although not in perfect condition, the previous owners did take good care of the boat and having it show very well online was one of the reasons I bought it sight-unseen. Since purchasing it over 3 years ago, I have devoted most of my time to upgrading and maintaining the boat. I guess you could call it a labour of love. haha

Hi Alfie, great video and we'll laid out! It would indeed be nice to hear what other safety gear you have apart from the mandatory. Say EPIRB, VHF, etc. Keep on doing great work! BTW, you sound does appear to vary in quality. Do you always use the same mic?

Thanks Nikolay! I will do another video for sure! I just use the mic on the camera and try to adjust the sound afterwards while editing. Sometimes I don't get the levels quite right. haha I have been considering getting a remote mic to make it more the sound more consistent. :)

How often do you practice reboarding skills and drills? Man over board? Fire? I would recommend a method of securing your flashlight ie velcro, carabineer. So it stays where you put it until you move it. I would also recommend a strip of photoluminesent tape on it so when it goes dark and bad it's easy to find.

Great video!!! Does Canada require a 'white' mast steaming / all-around light at night? Do you have a 'white' aft light above the cockpit for night sailing? Canada has a lot of attractive boats for sale --- I'm retired, in Thailand, so what 'certificate' requirements are foreigners required to have when sailing in Canadian waters? I've also read that some marinas require a $2 million insurance policy in effect, even if you only have a $25,000.00 boat, before they will do a 'haul-out' --- any info for me on that subject...

Thanks donjvalley! I have a white/all around light and I believe it is one of lights that can be used in combination with your other nav lights. I use mine for when I am at anchor and it is mounted on the top of the mast. I don't know the requirements for foreigners to operate sailboats here in Canada, but I think that information should be easy enough to find online...hopefully! :) Yes most marinas are far as I know require the 1 or 2 million insurance most likely to protect the other boat owners in the case where your boat causes damage to others....say like in a boat fire scenario I guess would be an example. For me I am glad to know that all the boats around me have to have good liability insurance as we are all in such close proximity. Although I know the state of my boat I don't know the condition of everyone else's.

Nice video. Do you have a fixed horn close to the helm? Good to have within quick reach for collision warning etc? On my little 23 footer I settle with a "vuvuzela" type manual horn, but it's pretty loud .. :-)

Have you seen the movie, "All Is lost"? It stars Robert Redford. It would be interesting to have some sailors watch the movie and point out the mistakes made in the movie. That would be taking into consideration how Ocean currents and winds or lack of effect objects in the water. What you would do different than the sailor in the movie. Maybe answer 3 questions; 1 Did you enjoy the movie or dis-like it and why? 2 What are the mistakes the sailor makes? 3 What are the directors mistakes? I ask about the director because it is the director that chooses if a scene looks proper or if anything in the scene needs to be changed to make it look believable. For me, a Science Fiction has more leeway in not having to prove accuracy because it is a fiction story based on fiction items, fiction objects and fiction species. I already have an expectation that stuff it not accurate or true to life. So if say you see an ant creature in a space suit sailing on a purple ocean and their is no detectable wind, it does not ruin the movie because it is science fiction. It could be it is propelled by an under current and the vessel has an under sail. You see imagination can take over in such a story. If however the movie is based of from a real sailboat, a ship, a jet, race car, horse or something that is real and they actually use one in a movie, I expect reality to be shown. For example, the water and sails show there is 0 to 1 knts wind, then the boat should not be moving 10 knts, unless it is shown being pulled by another boat or it is using it's motor. I digress. So I was wondering if you seen the movie and what you thought of it.
