Karlos is right. Kratos isn't your typical hero. David Jaffe (GoW creator) personaly said in an interview Kratos "is a FU type of guy". Many reviewers label Kratos as an anti-hero. This game definately proved that

I don't think so. Mainly because the Olympians were getting fed up with Ares and Kratos slayed him with the Blade of the God. The other Gods he killed, he mainly used his own weapons. Plus to challenge for the title, I think the onus must be mortal. Hence why he became the God of War after Ares' death.

People don't seem to understand that Kratos is a son of Zeus (in this game), which means, as Gaia put it, he has the blood of Chronos which is the gods' father, so it's not that completely outrageous for him to be able to defeat them.
