I wouldn’t want to small dogs fighting in my house if I had a new born but certainly these put bulls! I would put my foot down if I were her. One of them has to go. Joel has the best advice.
@BourbonInhibitions2 жыл бұрын
Dogs fighting in the home is almost always 100% on the owners not asserting themselves as the leaders in the house. How you live with your dog dictates almost all of their behavior, and bad habits manifest quickly, especially with working breeds. Dogs fight because no clear leader has been established so it's a constant power struggle between the dogs. If they don't see their owners as someone who will protect them, they have to dictate their own terms. When a dog knows who the leader is and that their owner will protect them, or get after them if they try to initiate an attack, they have no reason to follow through with that kind of aggression. Too often dogs are treated like royalty instead of like dogs. When you constantly let things go in the home the dogs learn more and more they have the freedom to do whatever they want. That includes fighting. If your dog has serious behavior issues, don't let them on the couch or in bed. Don't give them table scraps. Don't let them leave in front of you out the door or lead you on walks. And don't allow any unwarranted barking. Those things alone will shift the dynamic very quickly but consistency is key. This needs to be the new way of life, not a quick fix attempt. There are no quick fixes in dog training.

As much as he loves the dogs, it's not worth the risk. They could start fighting and turn their aggression onto the child, with being in such an heightened state of reactive mindset and triggered impulsive aggression. In this state, they lose all impulse control and rational. They could kill the baby in seconds, it's not a risk to take at all. Your advice was spot on.

A friend had a situation like this client. A dog fight broke out, I think while the baby was sleeping in another room. He intervened, and one of his dogs clamped onto his dominant hand while lunging for the other dog. He re homed his dog the aggressor, and went through surgeries and PT, that injury cost him his hand and his livelihood.
@kellerayra73632 жыл бұрын
I re homed a very strong drive border collie that started resource guarding more things as it got increasingly frustrated. Regardless of playing with a groups of dogs, walking regularly and obedience classes. This was the first dog my children ever had in the family. I’m not going to lie this dog could sense the lack of confidence in creating a comfortable situation for everyone. I had a behaviorist come in and after observation and talking for a couple hours she sent back a report. It would take even more time and money to help the situation and I probably would not get to the level of trust I was looking for. Re home would benefit EVERYONE. Dog included, the dog isn’t happy in those situations either. He went to a large animal vet who was retiring his herding dog. I learned something from that dog through that pain. Research your breeders and let the breeder pick a puppy…. a good breeder KNOWS the personalities in those litters from handling and socializing. I was devastated at the loss and had my dog handling confidence was shattered. I got back on the horse… let a different breeder pick the puppy. There’s no shame in doing what is the healthiest for everyone in the house. Especially if you exhaust all avenues at your disposal. The dog is now happy and the kids weren’t living with a negative first dog experience.

What this country needs is some gosh damn regulations on “breeders” and sellers. 20% of the US dog population are “pitbulls,” that’s a pretty large number considering how many other breeds there are. They became a huge trend and everyone started breeding anything that even remotely resembled a pit to make a buck, or be cool. Plus people STILL don’t believe in fixing their damn pets! That the reason they are more deadly than other breeds is that they lock their jaws onto you and will not let go. That is why I am now questioning if there should be more laws or at least warnings about this breed if a young family chooses to home this breed of dog. I can’t think of any other breed that would haul off and maul to death it’s owners children and maul it’s owners after 8 years in a loving family setting. Just can’t fathom the agony of the Mother losing her children but moreover the horrid trauma of laying over her children while her own dogs are mauling her. There are no words. I think they don't realize that for most people who have to make the choice to rehome an animal, that's the absolute last resort, after spending thousands on training, doing everything they can to change the environment at home to avoid issues, ruling out any kind of underlying health issues that could make them act out, etc. I had to rehome a dog that randomly decided after two years that she just did not want to share space with another dog, period. After thousands in vet bills, training programs, etc over the space of three-four months, the breaking point came when she jumped on our other dog and tried to rip his face off, WHILE HE WAS SLEEPING. He didn't have a favorite toy, wasn't near her food or vying for attention, wasn't in a favored sleeping spot, even. She just walked into the room, crossed the room, and jumped on him. And our other dog, in spite of being the same size, has always done everything possible to not annoy her; he never even fought back, just tried to make himself as small as possible, didn't even make a sound. We kept them separated at all times after that until I could find her a new home with no small children or other pets, and made sure that her new owners were aware that she had been fine with another dog for 2+ years, until she suddenly wasn't, and that there was literally NO trigger, no change, nothing, that set her off, so they would understand it wasn't an issue of them always having butted heads, or he challenged her, or anything like that, and that she was just not a dog that was trustworthy around other dogs. Some dogs are simply like that, for no particular reason. They just decide they don't want to put up with other dogs, and they're not going to, end of.

I agree that although it is a very difficult decision, sometimes a dog needs to be re-homed. You don't necessarily have to bring the dog back to a shelter. There are non-profit agencies like Doggy Harmony that can help you find a suitable home when the dog is not the best fit for a family. These agencies can also find foster homes until the dog can be matched with the right owner. It's not fair or safe to keep a dog in an environment that keeps it in a perpetually stressful situation. It's not fair or safe to keep an entire family in such a situation either. My rescue that I adopted came from similar circumstance like in this video. With training, exercise, structure and discipline she is now a happy dog. She is my only dog but I have 3 cats that she gets along with just fine. Joel's videos were a great tool in helping me get my dog to where she is today.

With my young daughter around the house, the dog play dates stopped immediately. No dog in the history of the world is worth risking your kid getting hurt over. Joel's right, that dog would make someone an amazing companion

The husband seems to have a very sweet and quiet nature, not the greatest fit for bully breeds. They need a VERY firm hand and CONSTANT physical activity so they don't feel repressed. These types of breeds were originally bred to bite and hold bulls, bears and other large animals around the face and head. THINK ABOUT THAT.... BEARS!!!!!! When baiting large animals was outlawed in the 1800s, people turned instead to using and breeding them to fight. They are powerful animals that require a VERY firm hand and experienced animal handler.

Structure in the home is the most important thing with aggressive dog. Same sex aggression is the most common dog on dog aggression. Yes you have to keep them separate for a while but you can make it work only some people will have that will. The place command and loose leash walking is where to start with both dogs. Yes with a family I would say the same thing. You don't want that kiddo getting between these two ever. You have to be on your toes

Thank you for being so firm and clear in this video, Joel! The situation is already out of control and the dogs have no respect. The mother and baby need to be safe and there can be no hedging the bets with " i love my dog' notions. Dear Joel, since yesterday I wanted to contact you and ask you your opinion and whether you believe there ‘is an actual problem’, or if uou think everything is ‘under control’. Speaking as someone who’s born in a country where the Pitt is banned, and also now resides in a another country where it’s also banned, looking in from the outside it appears to me that America has a massive problem with pittbulls, and forget the staggering dog on dog attacks, we’re talking fatalities against humans… kids in particular. Just a few days ago, you had two Pitt’s attack and kill a two year old and a five month old baby, critically injuring the mum whom laid on top of her two year old, trying to shield her from the barrage of bites and pulls. I had a look at some neutral stats and found it shocking, just digging slightly beneath the surface - pittbulls accounts for less than 6% of the dog population in America and yet … - more than half of them are up for adoption or in shelters, where then 40% of them will be euthanised. - not only does this breed account for way more bites and fatalities than other breeds, they are also responsible for much higher rate of severe injuries - since 1980, America has lost more than 260 KIDS to pittbulls attacks. I mean, I understand the whole song ‘no bad dogs, just bad people’, and ‘they’re so misunderstood’, but the facts speaks for themselves. Honestly, I shouldn’t care too much as I’m not even an American, but I am a dog lover, and also a mum. That story out of Tennessee broke my heart, cause how do you defend that? They had both dogs for 8 years and never experienced any aggression in either dogs, not towards their children and not towards each other, amazingly, both parents were staunch pittbulls advocates. So I just would love your opinion Joel, as I deeply respect your expertise and opinion. I think your truely into something with your approach to dog training. Thanks in advance

Hi Joel, great video once again. The owner obviously overwhelmed and baby's safety always come first. May I ask you how often you handle senior rescue dog with abuse history? Do they behave differently with your training method? (e.g. leash popping) How much they usually improve? Thanks in advance.
@Flippokid2 жыл бұрын
He's had a few on video. It's not entirely the same technique when it comes to fear. You have to be slower and more forgiving. The butt-flip method works better I think with these dogs, because then it's a gentle flip (in comparison to the leash pop at least). But at the same time, you have to be the boss, so there's certain behaviors you can't let them get away with. You have to learn and read your dog's body language to understand if it's coming from fear, or from 'I'm gonna do what I want'.

The most important thing with dogs is are they a safe dog and friendly, or not? They have to be mentally stable and willing to obey and respect people. Otherwise they don’t deserve your home. Period. And with two dogs , it’s even more dangerous. No one can be too careful , especially when it comes to two dogs. Rehome one or both , your life will be better. I personally prefer peace over stress and vet visits and would rehome both.
@sopyleecrypt6899 Жыл бұрын
A young, healthy dog of any breed MUST be walked every day. Ideally, any dog, even older dogs or dogs with health problems, should be walked every day. I don’t know why some dog owners don’t know this. The physical and mental benefits of a daily walk outside the home for a dog are enormous. If you can’t personally do it because of health issues, have someone walk the dog for you. Can’t do that either? Rehome the dog.

Don’t understand why anyone would risk getting a pit bull when small children live in the house. They are naturally aggressive dogs…some are incredibly sweet but just not worth it when you have small kids around. Latest of many headlines was two pit bulls a family had for 8 years killed a 5 month old and 2.5 year old little kids. The mom was in critical condition. WTH.
@Alteori Жыл бұрын
@Gr Ch Buck Um...... there is actually no such thing as a "pit bull." In fact, a pit bull isn't a specific breed-there are several types of pit bulls. Pit bull is an umbrella term that's used for several breeds often referred to as "bully breeds."

Just a walk per day is not going to fix this behavior, I think. Especially if all he's going to get is a 20-30 min walk around the block while he has to adhere by all the leash-walking rules. That has a place and a purpose; but it won't unwind this dog. This dog needs to get rid of all his energy, he needs to _play_ at least a cumulative hour per day. Intensive one on one play. He's very confrontational, so playing with other dogs is not safe. The owner can't play with him 1 hour per day either.

Pit bulls should not be pets. I love dogs but Pit bulls are not like other dogs, people don't want to face the truth but it's in their genetics to maul, maim and kill, it's what they were bred for. No one ever taught my dog to herd things but she wants to herd because it's in her genetics, Pit bulls want to kill because it's in their genetics. They can cause way more damage than any other dog, it's like owning a Tiger or a Bear, it's just not a good idea, especially with small kids in the house. This family needs to get rid of this dog, Pit bulls need to be bred out of exsistance, they aren't safe for anyone, we have so many wonderful dog breeds in this world that are not a danger to us, we don't need Pit bulls
@LilMissGGG2 жыл бұрын
Why are you even watching dog training videos if you have illogical beliefs like that? Are you having an difficult time controlling your Border Collie? Do you know how many breeds were bred to “kill?” Better get rid of every terrier and half the hunting dogs too. If your logic was reality then all humans would need to also be eliminated because we also are bred to kill literally everything around us? And while we are at it, we better get rid of anything else that makes us scared. Let’s get rid of cats also bc we know they have murderous minds. Oh ands cars too! So many deaths from those. And you know what else kills? Virtually every animal, including us, on this planet so we all gotta go! Gtfoh with that irrational thinking. Use logic to think and not emotions. I know it can be hard but, if you’d truly spend a lot time around numerous breeds of dogs throughout your life and formed opinions off that, you’d quickly realize they ALL are capable of aggression, mauling, and killing. And you’re comparing wild apex predators to a domesticated dog? A wolf would definitely kill faster and more effectively then any of the meanest pits out there. A bear can take your life with one swipe of its paw. A tiger with one well place bite to your neck. Place blame where it belongs, on people. People who don’t educate themselves on training and canine behavior before getting a dog, or even after. People who abuse or neglect their pets. People who get an animal to fill their own selfish need for love. People who are too lazy or just don’t care to put the time and energy into raising a dog properly. Very few dogs are born just natural aggressive and wanting to kill. It still has to be taught, and conditioned. I guess we need to eradicate all these ankle biting nasty aggressive little dogs too then right? Not fair to discriminate and have double standards for other breeds. If someone is naive and ill prepared enough to go into a rescue and just pick a dog and expect it not to have some sort baggage then they need to adjust their expectations and not get a dog in the first place. If a person doesn’t know enough to meet a dog and assess their behavior for potential issues, then they shouldn’t honestly be owning a dog to begin with. That’s like not studying the material closely for an important exam then being upset and crying “that’s not right, I didn’t know there would be such difficult questions on it.” I’ve met plenty of aggressive dogs and contrary to your opinion, non were pits. They were Yorkies, poodles, German shepherd and shepherd mixes, border collies, all the chihuahuas, Aussies, Maltese, Bichons, labs, heelers, and jack Russell’s, shitzus, a schnauzer, and one absolutely terrifying chow chow named Bear. Just proves that ANY breed can be aggressive you only hear about “pits” bc it makes for the best ratings and views bc people like you that enjoy being scared and their beliefs controlled by what they are told, and hear. If you want to advocate for a good cause then go fight the war on drugs because those are real killers. This channel is meant for open minded, smart individuals, that care for ALL dogs and want to help them. Not for small minded, weak willed, nothing positive or rational to say ever about anything, folks like you. Take your negative Nancy ass to FB where you belong.

We're trying to correct the growling and rewarding when she's calm. Only an issue in the house (resource guarding of specific spaces and people) out on walks the 2 dogs are fine. We've had discussions on what happens if we can't correct the negative interactions of our younger dog. Possibilities include the older dog moving out with another family member when/if time comes.
