The relationship between Kong and his owner is amazing. A no-nonsense owner with a no-nonsense breed. Take note of how Kong also frequently makes eye contact with his owner, which means he is looking for the green light from his owner to proceed. A lot of these breeds were created to work for their masters, it's one of their main purposes. If your dog is a king, you have to be the supreme emperor, that's how their brains are wired and the language they understand best.

I live in the middle of nowhere, UK, and have a three and a half year old American Akita. Due to covid restrictions and other things, Bruno never got socialised, never met other dogs or people for that matter, until very recently. You can imagine he has turned into a very big, strong, whole dog, and was proving very difficult if we met either hikers or other dogs while we have been out walking. Wrestling with a hundred pound dog is not an option to my mind, and after watching lots of dog training channels online, I stumbled on your videos a couple of weeks back. Using your long, loose leash methods has worked like magic with him, and in a very short time I have been able to take him out without stressing about who or what we might meet. Three days ago we met a miniature dachshund walkingwith his owner. Bruno was excited but not aggressive, and after checking him gently, we walked together around our usual route. We've met up every day since. For the first time in his life, Bruno has a friend, I could cry with happiness and it is down to your online help. Incidentally, I am 65, disabled and frequently struggle with my mobility, if I can manage this, it shows the efficacy of your training methods. Thank you so much, heartfelt gratitude from both me and Bruno.

I am so happy for you! ❤️ Hello, from Eugene, Oregon! I think Joel’s channel is the best, as he gives owners step-by-step instructions to follow. No shortcuts. “I'll do this all day!” 😊 You followed those directions, and you did it! The reason your dog is doing so well is that you are the one that did the work! Congratulations! ❤

Thank you. I have been consistent with him from the beginning, but the infamous Akita stubbornness surprised me. Once, when he 2as about four months old I told him to sit for me to remove his lead, in a field where he was allowed to play. This was a normal command, he had always done it in the past, but this day refused. I am also stubborn and stood with him for an hour and ten minutes, as snow fell around us, until he realised he was not moving on until he did as he was told. Four months old!

Joel, I taught grades 1-3. Your dog training methods are so similar to the best classroom management methods I learned. Happy kids and dogs come from homes and classrooms with calm, confident, upbeat adults in charge who don't let the kids rule the roost or run wild. The behaviors they learn help them be more confident and make more friends. You've helped me so much with my dog and he is happier for it. Thank you.

These guys are absolutely fantastic! But ALL of your clients are great, because they got the help they needed. Re: maybe this guy went further than he needed to: No, he didn't. When you correct a dog like that, or alternatively when you don't let them watch at that thing that ticks them off anymore, they _need to submit._ Just accepting their punishment is not enough if their mind is still ready to jump up and get back to whatever it is they were doing. When the dog sighs and relaxes, it submits, not before.

Ive seen all these videos and any more of yours, and I will say, exactly as you've said it: "this isn't easy". But thanks to you our family no longers even wants a trainer, Im explaining them new things every time we talk about the family dog, and the only commands so far we've needed outside are "leave it" and "sit". 70% improvement, with a very late start because the dog was 3 years old already. Of course I still feel very unconfident, but I am starting to connect the dots, and I want my dog to be as happy as possible in the end. I literally still have a hard time fathoming how our dog became so much better in a relatively short amount of time, and I can thank you for 90% of it easily. Not just because of how well you explain everything in your videos, but because you showcase these clients and stay humble. Thank you! Edit: (I will do this all day is really powerful.. we had to do turns for 10 minutes before a fencepost with a dog smell, and I simply showed that I will do this all day. And he listened in the end, looking at me with a big happy smile. This truly is the best we can do for our dogs!)

Great video. I do/did all of this with my rescue staff-Boxer. He was worse than these three dogs. His mixture anxiety, dominance and bad training was that challenging, that I could not get to within 150 ft of a dog, without him going absolutely crazy on the lead. I've had dogs from pups all my life, never a problem from them, I trained them well, but taking on this 6 year old dog with large baggage was a massive challenge. Now he is a different dog, a lot calmer, very little anxiety and he knows who is the boss. I can now get him to sniff dogs, with very little reaction, except a play bow afterwards. Great stuff Beckman, I always recommend your channel to other dog walkers I bump into, with difficult dogs.

I’ve watched a lot of trainers online before we got them, and still after having them. It hasn’t always been 100% and my German shepherd is still a bit reactive but she has made SO much progress and we work on it every chance we get. I was able to call both of them off a rabbit they were actively chasing the other day and I was just so proud of them and appreciative of all the trainers that put their information out. It’s so important for this kind of information to be available because there are so many people that need it. Thank you again!

Thanks for this! I would be very interested in a video on your view of the training relationship of dogs to men vs. women owners and your analysis of the differences (if any). Unfortunately, I have noticed that sometimes dogs (including my own) more quickly obey commands from men, and I have wondered if it's just due to deeper voice, or if there are other factors. I noticed that all three owners in this video are men, as are you. But I also have heard you mention your wife and other women who train with you. I know this could be controversial as the topics of gender and gender stereotypes are very sensitive. But I wanted to throw this out there and see if you would consider doing a video addressing the question however you see fit and/or show more women training. Thanks!

I've wondered how often female dogs have a pack leader mentality. In many species (horses and lions come to mind), the females lead group moves and maintain discipline while the males guard the territory and protect the group.
@khayfer

I would think it depends on who invests more time training the dog. In our household, the dog obeys me (woman) but the rest of the family have a 50-75% success rate. The reason why is because I am the one investing the most time training, feeding and bonding with our pup. The cats, on the other hand, barely listen to me, but love my oldest daughter 😅

I would actually say that the NFL guy with Kong would have been my pick; the “normal” guy did have excellent timing and great response and I would NOT have guessed he only had the dog for just shy of a month, that takes real dedication. That said, I was very proud of him for putting his dog in a down while he was sitting with you but he let the dog get up without releasing him, same thing when he put the dog on his side. When you put a boundary on a dog’s body like that as a correction, you CANNOT let them decide when to break that boundary. If they do, they need to go back exactly how you want them to. They can’t start to get up and then lie down on their other side, they should stay in the position you put them in when you set the boundary. Some people might think that’s too hardcore, but most dogs will learn exceptionally fast that you only follow through 90% and before you know it they’ll take that 10% and challenge you on it. You don’t want to put that idea in their head, they need to know that what you say is not negotiable. The faster they learn that, the faster they’ll become an excellent dog for you and the happier you’ll be with the relationship.

@slimothyjames4577

My family were some of the worst dog owners in terms of obedience and all that. Their dogs were always hellions and they thought it made them guard dogs since we were way out in the country. They treated those dogs better than they did me, and they were always fed even at our own expense when we could barely feed ourselves. I was the lowest in the pack hierarchy, because the dogs were dominant towards me and I was made to give up my seats for them. I knew what they did wrong but I couldn't do anything about it, really. I've been away from them for a few years now since I got married. I'm looking into getting myself a dog now, and in preparation I've been watching a lot of your content. A while back when I met a lady at the vet who had a pup that was clearly going to be MASSIVE, I recommended your channel to her since she was worried she'd struggle to control him. :)

Joel you are the best trainer!!! I would like to see how much you do initially with the dogs before you take the leash yourself and start to train a dog. And also how do you train the clients exactly. A few people in my neighborhood have asked me how to get their dogs to not pull. These are just nice older ladies with dogs who are basically good but a little rambunctious. Shall I offer to go to their houses and then do the Doorway Method? Then driveway and walk? When do you talk about the basic philosophy? Would that be best done first? Like in their house, petting the dog, get a sense of how they see the situation, dog relationship, develop rapport & pet dog during that then start with Doorway? How do you get past them saying, "Oh well, she obeys YOU--there's something about you" to help them understand they can do it? (I'm obvi not a trainer; I just like people & dogs) 🐾❤️

The real winner will be whoever can get my 110lb very quiet and pleasant girlfriend to take charge with my 80lb GSD/pit mix. All the anxiety and drive of a GSD with all the stubbornness of a pit. He's great with me, checks in all the time, constantly looks to me for guidance when something unexpected happens (meets a new dog, for example). But with her, she just won't assert herself at all and he leads her. She tries to negotiate with him. She is obviously not thrilled every time I remind her that the issue is her, not him.

Arrange for her and the dog to work with a trainer without you present. My husband is the big softie in our family. He learned more from a good local trainer in one lesson than from any other source, especially me. The dog learned a couple things that day, too, and they were proud to show me their new skills. Suddenly my husband understands what I'm talking about. 🤣

Can you (or anyone) recommend a video on how to behave around a dominant dog who already views you as lower on the pecking order? For example, my friend had a neutered husky who had a very alpha mindset. He wasn’t aggressive and was generally well behaved, but he clearly viewed me (a small female) as lower than him in the pack. He would correct me (bark, even mouth-bite my hand) if I did something he didn’t like, such as enter the house when my friend wasn’t home. His sister husky was super sweet and non-threatening in every way. To complicate things, the male had health issues, which I know can make anyone cranky. I know that training a dog is the owner’s responsibility, but is there anything I can do to recover if I’ve made a submissive impression on a dog?

Even if being strong doesn't matter, it sure helps. My husky knows without a doubt im irresistibly stronger than her. Ultimately it is about dominance but all the means to enforce dominance are measures of strength. The pronged collar, the muzzle collar, strength multipliers. Our relationships with dogs are innately *magnanimous*.

Physical strength helps, but mental strength, determination & consistency are even more important. When you're not physically powerful, you often are better at finding ways to get the job done with timing& technique. But above all, it's the "I'm your leader, pup, so calm your 🫏 down!" attitude that one needs.

For the winner guy: ofcourse props. But a q for you Joel: he hand pushed his dog's butt to sit when it was doing unwanted behavior at the fence ( and even in office). I have heard that touching dog w ones hands on the body as part of corrections may be counterproductive? Any thoughts on that plz bc i am not sure? would he not do better just by working the collar pressure and his posture to get these sits out of the dog? His hand commands for down seem to work well but the sit seems less good... and i am left to wonder if a stronger first correction at the fence with no hand on the body maybe have got faster/ better result? Tx

If you watch Joel's videos, he's very good at letting people/owners know when it's best to not touch them. I do Barn Hunt with my high prey drive Dobe and learned that it was best to touch him when he found the rat rather than reward him with food, making him take his focus off what we want them to find. Think the last guy follows up with touch to hold him in place to let him know, you cannot self release. I'll let you know when you can get up. Hope that helps.

Yes I very rarely push a dog’s butt down. However, if your going to interject and tell someone what to do differently, the thing you say must make a substantial difference or it’s not worth saying, and I didn’t believe telling him to do my method for getting the dog to sit would have helped more than 10%

Sadly most people, not all, just think how cute is this puppy and forget about the future. I know down here in So. Cal there are too many working dogs in the shelters. GSD, Malamois, huskies and the list goes on. Recently I rescued a GSD and a Malamois. They are a handful but knowing about the breeds and their needs, they will always have a home. Beckman's training helps so much when I feel defeated. Other than learning What I love about his channel he isn't Selling "stuff", dogs, services in every video. So much more authentic.

I have a 4 month old golden retriever husky pitbull mix, she is starting to do this thing where she is playing with the other bigger dogs well it looks like she is playing and then you will hear her start to growl and then it will turn into her snarling and biting the other dog, she drew blood once, I clap and grab her but she will growl at me, she also has bit me it didn't draw blood or anything but it was bruised, so I thought I'll catch her before she gets to that mindset like if she starts jumping on the dogs back and usually that's when it starts I'll try to go get her but when she sees me coming she runs I calmly walk over to her but by the time I get her it seems like she knows so the will whip-around and growl when I try to grab her caller, I'm not sure what to do. I don't want her to be aggressive and she is only 4 months, she will only get worse if I don't get advice or anything. I don't know what to do.

Thank you for saying that. The ankle biters have attacked my GSD several times. Their owners won’t take responsibility for their dogs’ actions. The last one was screaming about blood, and demanding my phone number, until she saw which dog was bleeding (mine). I need my dog to ignore them, and those owners need to open their eyes and realize that their dogs are causing problems. (This happened at an off leash park, and while I was picking up a 💩 while my dogs were playing fetch with my adult son.)

@@SuziQ. Your GSD must be a very good dog then. I don't know, that kind of situation would be a really great opportunity to present the necessity of intentional balanced training and even plug Joel's channel. I might have demanded her number and at least made a report so that they might see the need to be responsible dog owners and take responsibility and take charge of their little faux alpha
@SuziQ.

@@underduress5761 , I should have demanded her number. I didn’t realize that my girl was bleeding until she got in the car, and dripped blood on the towels. By then, the woman was gone. My girl isn’t aggressive, but she needs to learn to ignore the little reactive dogs. They tend to start screaming when they see my dogs (the Lab ignores everything except her 🎾), and the GS is curious, because before we moved, almost all of her friends were small dogs who were playful and friendly. We were partly at fault, because I didn’t tell the boys to keep throwing the balls while I was picking up the poops. The woman who said that her dog was reactive should have picked her dog up when it screamed. The consequence is that I don’t run them in public parks anymore, but our new house has a decent sized yard and we play 🎾 fetch every day.

My Labrador did a lot for correcting the puppy, but I corrected biting, too, and we trained a lot at home, including crate training (she crates herself when she’s tired).
