That part about having a job is so true. Trying to drain the energy out of my energetic pitbull when he was about 2, I learned that he really loved to search for things. We used to play fetch with a tennis ball, so I started throwing it into bushes and weird places, and taught him the "find" command. He'd go nuts. We could do it for an hour straight and he'd never get tired of it. When we went back home, he'd sleep until the next day.

Buddy is just like my dog, Buddy. Mine doesn’t smell like that…but he plays rough…which is weird because he’s a timid dog…skiddish about sounds….but loves to run up to dogs and people

My pittie, George, is like buddy. He sniffs aggressively and plays rough. He has very few dog friends he plays well with. Both of them are bigger, 40 pounds heavier and taller than George. In the beginning, I was overwhelmed and often times stressed out by George's over the top forwardness. He was also very territorial at home and very suspicious of strangers. I consulted with many trainers to learn about dog behavior and how to be a good leader for him. I would feel so guilty when George would act like a jerk to people or other dogs. Soon, I learned that George needed a lot of stimulation/exercise to calm him down and be a better doggie citizen. I signed him up for Barnhunt and AKC tracking sports where he got his tracking dog certificate. We're currently training to take the VST and he loves it. (Variable surface tracking test) I specifically got a male trainer and a male dog walker because George was more suspicious and fearful of men. George is also taking agility classes and training for obedience competitions and rally. We go hiking in the mountains or run around at the beach once a week and go for local hikes and long walks everyday. I feel like a soccer mom taking him to all his activities but its worth it to see him gain confidence and becoming comfortable with new people and dogs. He still acts like a fool once in awhile, but I have learned to "predict the future" by reading his body language and being vigilant of our surroundings. Like buddy, George was out of control starting at 8-9 months. George is now 2 and starting to chill a little bit. I think he'll probably still be a spaz for many more years but it's all good. He brings a lot of joy. Thanks for your vidoes, Joel. They're super helpful and affirming.

You are the perfect dog owner. Pitties play rough and they nibble when they play, my best friend has a Pitt and a staffy and that's what I noticed when I play with them and I'm wondering because they're mouthy when they play that ignorant people think they're attacking? I love the breed alot of my friends have XL bullies. I've got a Cane Corso who I've just rescued but he's been a dream and a grumpy old patterdale terrier who I love with my whole heart ❤ she came as a rescue with a bite history andd I was her last chance and my friend, who does rescues, decided she would not go to anyone but me now. I love this channel its teaching me so much.

@@th3drug323haha! You’re right. If I did more serious research, I would have probably picked a different breed. But, I’ll tell you this. There is a sad amount of misinformation out there, specifically from Dodo’s Pittie Nation, where they promote every pitbull as a gentle“cuddle bug” who is friendly to everyone. This is where I felt misinformed and I think it has deceived many people into getting a challenging dog like a pitbull. Hence, the many mishaps. Owning Georgie has been challenging, eye-opening. I learned a ton about this breed and I think that is valuable especially for raising my next one. George is loved and I’m glad I persevered to help him become a confident dog and to give him a good life. ✌🏼

I taught my dog scent work by putting him in a sit and placing a treat a few feet away. Then I said "find it!" and he went and got the treat, then I marked and rewarded. Then I put the treat further away, then around the corner/out of sight, then I started putting him in a different room. Once he was good at finding the treats then I put some essential oil on a wooden spoon and repeated the process. It's his favorite game and it tires him out so much!

We play this with a toy and our dog also loves it! He even has a button for it and asks to play it pretty incessantly lolol! “Find it” “find it” all day long🤣He has gotten much better about using his nose and can find the toy so fast now! Dogs are so fun and impressive!

Reminds me of my pup, being pulled away from his mom (1st litter) and litter mates at too young of an age (6 weeks). Lacking social cues. We have been socializing him with as many older dogs as possible, thank goodness these other dogs have corrected him. Now at 5 months old, he's become a more balanced dog. Thanks for the vids.

My dog is a pittbull and she thinks her job is to chase rabbits, squirrels and deer. I just cannot break her of that 0-60 take off with no warning when she spots them. I live on 11.5 acres so she is off leash a lot. she is 6 years old now, I have had her 5.5 of them. She does not chase armadillos or opossums.

just an interesting tidbit; cats can also correct dogs. i have seen my 2 lb cat cow my 85 lb pitt/ greyhound mix into a corner and scold him twice. they are great friends, but should he get too rough with her, she will happily knock him down a peg. i love seeing animals teach each other. great video as always@! would you make a follow up on buddy in a few months on one of his visits?

I think it depends on the cat and the dog involved. Sometimes the dog will chase and catch it to kill. Not every dog will but some just have a higher prey drive. So, in most instances cats do a good job correcting a dog but it doesn’t work in every instance/situation.

Without a doubt. My female pit, sage is a little tank and has a propensity to lick the heck out of kittens. (We used to do rescue) when we got dillin the tuxedo..sage would constantly try to lick him. Dillin wanted no part of it and we had to clean and neosporin sage's nose daily for a while until they both learned their limits.

My female orange longhair took right to boundary training our young gal adopted lab mix. IMPORTANT: me and kitty have a VERY trusting relationship. I can sleep up against her, play w her belly and paws, we have established communication, and so on. Also, we did a careful introduction (baby gates!) and established kitty's toys and territory and sacred. Kitty was here first and she is boss, plus both animals are incredibly good-natured & predictable and i am talented at reading body language. All of this matters, please don't just Thunderdome intro your cats & dogs!

Notice how Buddy now approaches Prince with respect because of the corrections Prince gave him. One at 4:04, at 7:48 & again at 10:55 And he chooses to play with the other dogs who haven't corrected.

Maybe you have the chance to let an intact female teach him how to smell in a more polite manner. I myself "used" my girl many times with over excited males, especially mid-puberty. She will always be polite in the first meet-up, lie down, spread wide and let the boy smell. But when she considers: "O.K. This is about enough for getting to know me" - Man! She will teach that youngster a lesson. Not biting him - but like Prince did, just way more intense. First correction will be quick, but harsh - not lasting longer than 0,5-1 Sek. But the 5th time she'll be like:"Boy! Keep it down, keep your distance, or I'll show you" - She pins down males twice her weight easily - impressive every time. And same as you do with Prince, she gets my praise and if needed my protection, e.g. when it's on the brink of escalating into serious biting. Greetz from Germany :-)

And I am glad to return some of the favours we were given back to others - 'cause when she grew up, having & actively searching out people with older, stable dogs to teach my ruff 'n tumble Lab-Lady some respect helped us/her a lot to get along with every dog she meets. It just like stated in the video: Take some effort to find the right company for your dog, so that it can learn how to control the energy level to a degree that other dogs are not overwhelmed.

I never realized what an issue the strong smelling can be. I've never seen until these videos. I can see how this is a massive issue. I like how Joel also puts responsibility on the owners to do the right thing and not be these "do-nothing" owners that find it difficult to even go out and even walk their dogs.

@@Jan-sb2ql I would say if you have the capacity to prevent contributing to* the problem of overpopulation in strays and unwanted animals, then by all means, don't neuter. As long as you are 100% positive you won't slip up and add to the problem, or you guarantee you can handle any consequences of your dog's actions. However, this dog is definitely far out of the normal range of what is fully enforceable through training. His impulse control issues are driven by biology. Those are* almost guaranteed to not be completely fixed by training due to the compulsive nature of it all. Sometimes, the best thing is to help curb what would be driving that biological response. I'm all for leaving things as nature intended, when able. Sometimes though, it's just not working out, whether for behavioral issues related to biological impulses (humping, oversmelling, aggression, etc.) and cutting off the supply of such a drive to a degree is the only answer left. Unless you're planning on breeding the dogs for a purpose, then would risking their quality of life really be worth keeping them intact? If experts and other professionals told you what he is saying here? I'd hope not, if you're a decent person who's more concerned about your dog living comfortably and being able to interact with others versus keeping his nuts simply for ego. Strong, confident Dobermans have been a part of my life for the past 25 years. Your breakdown of the socialization of powerful dog breeds is real-world and brilliantly candid. When you said these dogs need jobs, I gave you a standing ovation in my living room. I was incredibly fortunate that my first Dobermans came from a breeder/family that trained their Dobies for search & rescue. A condition for my purchase of a pup was that I join their training sessions. Dogs work things out quickly amongst themselves. They correct each other effectively. And, they build a stronger pack as a result. Your pack is amazing!

My 2 1/2 yr. old pitbull (also Buddy) gets to play early mornings (7 days a week) with 3 female GSDs. We have a huge off leash park and at 6:30 AM, we are a small group. They run and walk and roughly wrestle for over a mile. They are his harem. I've been able to "teach" 2 other owners of young dogs how important the rough-housing is to their psyche. One owner thought he should tell his younger pup not to pull on my dog's collar or chew on his neck but I explained the process and that if my boy didn't like it, he would cry "uncle". My boy is now called his harem's chew-toy. After the exercise and camaraderie he is chill the rest of the day!

I'm 5 ft and he is 27" at shoulder and 80#. Oh yeah, I'm turning 66 in January. So much improvement using your methods. Walks are much better! He is German Shepherd and Cane Corso.

I love these videos!! I’m a receptionist at a doggy daycare and have learned SO MUCH about dog behavior and body language from working with hundreds of them. I’ve never seen a dog trainer do this tactic but I’m totally on board! We get so many puppies just like Buddy and I always explain to the parents that they’ll usually chill out after being a part of pack play and being properly corrected by dogs who don’t tolerate their crap lol. Works like a charm every time and I always praise the dogs giving the correction!

Cam we just take a moment to respect how much of a beautiful mix connery is, absolutely stunning dog Lovely to see buddy burning off some energy, always love seeing your work, I'm slowly working my way to training dogs as a hobby, I've started with dog walking, and then when the owners have commented on how much better they are being, I'm showing them what I'm doing to help them understand their dog better I've used your methods to train several friends dogs, 2 gsd that had never been taught how to behave unfortunately were literally wild dogs in the yard, they are doing so much better, a very overbearing reactive rottie, and a couple small yappy dogs that were mixes It's also extremely helpful hearing your detailed overviews of body language as you know what to look for! I think I accidentally taught my Lab mild scent work, lol. When he was younger and I was trying to teach him how to sit/laydown + stay in the back yard I'd occasionally throw treats all over the yard and tell him to "track treat" as a break from the command (he'd start getting antsy.) Then he'd trot all over the yard in a wide circle and steadily hone in on where the treats were. Eventually, the tracking also turned into nighttime hide-and-seek in the summer where I'd go sneak away and hide somewhere in our yard, he'd eventually realize I wasn't with him, and he'd do the same wide circling motions until he found me. We eventually stopped because I used up all the good hiding spots and he'd just start checking the usual areas first. But, next time I need to do laundry, I might grab a shirt and try this with him instead!

You are right. A lot of that is over active puppy play. That is just what he needs, interaction with larger breed adult dogs. A lot of what puppies needs to learn is from other dogs.

Thanks for the tip on scent work, I've been interested in teaching it for the mental stimulation for both my dogs. And thank you for the idea to have the rough dog "sit out." I just found your channel. It’s great! I have a 4 1/2 year old intact male Vizsla that was pretty close to how Buddy is but just a tad more respectful. Kind of. Lol. I did everything you recommended. I walked him 3 long walks a day, gave him running time too, made his job hunting birds (mock hunting) where his job was to flush them and then drive them back to me, and also having members of my family hide and then having him find them and also hiding his food or treats and having him find it. I was having the same trouble with my Vizsla that buddy has around the same age. It got a lot better but we still had issues. What really whipped him into shape was when I rescued a 2 1/2 year old female Belgian Malinois when he was about a year and a half. She laid down the law and corrected his excitement and rough play by pinning him and holding him down. She would even correct him for disrespecting me by giving him a little nip on the neck. I was surprised at how well he improved. He trained better too after her arrival. But, to this day we still do all the same stuff but the Malinois has different jobs. Thanks for your videos. 5:52 Unfortunately, that's not really possible here in Japan because 70~80% of dogs in this country are tiny little lap dog breeds. Even worse, almost all of them are super unsocialised and badly trained. Just the sight of Buddy running up to them with crazy eyes like that would scare the crap out of the little dogs. On top of that, most of the dogs come from puppy mills so just the slightest bump from a big dog will either fracture their legs or dislocate their knee cap. For this reason, owning a Pitbull in Japan is a whole different story than in other countries. The risk is just too high.

My dog is a spaniel terrier mix and he has the same energy as buddy, likes to play rough and provocatively. I was lucky enough to have him grow up with my sister’s dogs who socialized him really well and toned down his behaviour making it much easier for me to work with him - it really made me realise that there is no better way to train a dog than with another, grown-up dog. It’s like a direct line of communication and the puppy always understands immediately because the adult dog naturally has perfect timing. My sister also has a really patient dog whose main goal in life is to please his human so he’s just a perfect “mentor”. Without him, my dog would probably have issues like Buddy so I’m forever indebted to him. ❤

Love that your video got so many views. I was thinking from the last video that you said walking 2 mile a day was good and thats about what I give my dog but this video mentioning taking him other places and not the same walk is something I haven't done yet. He gets to walk around my block which has dogs and squirrels and stuff, or I take him around at my sisters neighborhood which he walks with kids and sees streets and houses but thats about it. Commentary is priceless! Especially the golden nugget about giving your dog a job, a purpose. It never crossed my mind that dogs need a purpose similar to people. And I am definitely going to try scent training. Even if my dog sucks at it who cares, it's the mental stimulation that matters.

I used small treats from supper to train my dog. it's a great way to wind down the day. Start with the sit stay. Making the distance longer that you move away and come back and treat them, good boy stay. Until you can be out of their sight and go around and hide then call them. I watched my dog put his nose to the ground and follow the same path in circles and go straight to me following the same path. Only reward them when they get it right and just bring them back to the same position to start from. They'll figure it out. If my dog didn't get that one, I'd do a simplier command, that I could reward him with. Have patience and fun training your dog, but don't make food the only motivation, Good doggie rubs too, mix it up. Make sure they have success in doing something that's simple, sit, stay, then work your way up. Start in the same spot. You want them to notice a repetiveness and succeed in doing things right. It builds confidence in your dog. Rather than them just knowing, what not to do. I just started watching this channel and I love what he does with these dogs. I thought I would share what I did, to have fun teaching my dog to stay and to come find me. I hope you will have fun teaching your dog too. 💗🐶

Yessss we play hide and go seek often with our 9month old pitbull puppy! It's her favorite game! She isn't as rough as Buddy but definitely rambunctious and gets overly excited to play! Thanks for sharing this! It's been hard finding a friend for her that can tolerate her energy level. I'm going to keep looking! I taught my dog the basics of tracking with a ball. Threw it over a wall, with bushes behind it, and she wouldn't know where it dropped so she really had to work her nose. She found it 99% of the time. I know Robert Cabral uses 3 objects (staves in his case but the objects don't matter), rubs his hands with treats, and only touches 1 of them. Then he places them next to each other on the other side of the yard, and tells the dog to find his one. Then he fades out the treat smell. The trainer I followed for a while did it with a small box with cheese or other strong smelling stuff inside. Dragged the box on a rope for first 5, then 10, then 20 meters, from the place where we were standing. Then on go we would tell the dog to search, and only helped them out when it was clear they were lost.

Its very very cool to see a dog that's all the way with scent work. They get into specific commands for ground vs air scenting, direction of circles etc...so cool and i have no idea how that's done. Im not into it or an expert, but I've made fetch complicated to the point where it's basically scent work training before, and it's very cool to watch them sort out how to go about it.

Our Pup used to have a few mundane "jobs," if you will, before we learned that it was actually a thing. She had Mail and Newspaper Delivery, gently taking mail from the mailman or whomever got out from the box and bringing it inside, and helping us bring in groceries, usually one can or box at a time. We'd set aside a chunk of groceries specifically so she could help us bring them in. (She actually kind of asked to help, and we just roped her into it?) We also taught her to bring us certain things, which somehow turned against us when she'd go and grab her purse or one of our shoes and bring them to us when she felt like a walk. 😆

There’s a guy who puts out videos of a shelter and they have the dogs play together to let the dogs get energy out and socialize there will be 10 pit bulls in this enclosure and some of them play really hard, that would be a perfect place to bring a dog like buddy

Prince is one great doggo. Intelligent, patient and loving. I am so impressed watching him handle problem dogs. I watched our senior dog, Skittles, teach our new rescued chihuahua, Audrey, not to bite in play. Audrey would nip us with those needle sharp teeth, and we tried to stop her nipping. In the end, it was not us humans who stopped the bad habit, but Skittles, who would play with Audrey until she started nipping, then he did a rebuf and hold her gently in his month for a moment to show her how it’s done. Then he’d release her. Rinse and repeat. In two days, Audrey never nipped or bit again. But she will hold your hand with her mouth. She learned, not from us humans, but from the alpha dog in the house. There are dogs with wisdom, and Prince has it.

This was very helpful to me. Buddy is just like my border collie mix, Finn. He wants to play but acts crazy and puts off a lot of other dogs. I've tried positive reinforcement style training but he's just locked onto the dog/squirrel/jogger he sees and couldn't care less about any treat. Thanks for the tips!

Great selection of dogs to help this dog learn boundaries. Prince was amazing - but the other two contributed in their own way. Buddy needs lots of interactions with dogs like these ones - in a safe environment :)

I was taking part in a man trailing class. We stated with someone contacting the dog and within their sight run a bit a away and then we tell the dog a command like search and whe he goes to the person the person gives a reward to the dog and the owner acts all content. Then slowly you increase distance and don't let the dog see where the person goes. But before you give the search command you let him sniff an item only the person had touched. It's important to not use a collar but a harness and a long leach because in this case we do want the dog to pull us along.

One of few people that rly knows what he is telling and why its important to do. I know way to many people that disagree with "give your dog a job", dog wants to have a job, dog wanta to have some purpose, if you dont give your dog a job he will find one for himself anyway, but this job may be something you dont even wants him to do at all.

My reasoning behind neutering is decrease the amount of unwanted puppies. I have only had rescues and do not ever want anything else. I’m not judging or frowning on breeding, this is a way I feel i can help. Ole Bob Barker was my hero…Spay and neuter! Love the videos and the techniques taught. My last rescue is doing great on his gentle leader. Maybe I’ll rescue him a friend when I feel he is ready!

This dog's eyes look crazy, but I thought his body wasn't too wild, although powerful. Maybe stubborn. Seems like he would be great having a job or something to focus on that kept his interest and was varied. Thanks for the scent work info Joel! Along with "find Daddy/Mommy" I play hide-and-seek with my small dog's toys when we are stuck inside due to bad weather. I hide a toy while she's in a sit/stay and then I release her in the room and she goes in and hunts the toy down. When she finds it, I play with her as a reward. It helps her use her nose, patience (she's in a sit/stay while I hide the toy), her body (she goes under tables, up on chairs, looks behind furniture), plus she starts to learn the name I call each toy because I say "find elephant" or whatever.
