The reason why I appreciate Joel as a trainer is because he actually has trainer dogs. I can't remember how many times I called up trainers to find out they don't have trainer dogs (dogs that assist your dog's training). I believe a good trainer needs a trainer dog because there are some behaviours that can only be stimulated or stopped by a trainer dog.

This mixed methods approach is EXACTLY what works with my Aussie! He needs freedom to sprint and roughhouse with other dogs, if I go 2 consecutive days without the dog park (rain, etc) he starts to get real wired and nutty. On the off days I bring him along to run errands and I can see how happy and adjusted he is when I’m consistent. This is real stuff Joel is talking about here! 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

My pit bull Nikki was a fetcher, she’d go for hours and she loved fetching with sticks so I would throw them into a huge brush pile we had behind our house and she’d root around and fine the exact stick I threw. She never came out with a different stick, had to be that one. Had the exercise with running and mental stimulation in finding the stick amongst all the others. And me being a kid was so AMAZED that she could find the right one! 😆

...instead of throwing the ball 50times in row....let the dog sit, throw the ball into high grass...let the dog do some turns and steps, so he forgets the exact direction you threw the ball....let the dog search its beloved ball...that way your dog is likely to be calm and stimulated mentally and physically within 20 minutes...you will be amazed how the intensity of searching by nose easily tires your dog much more than walking it for an hour.

My chihuahua does that exact jump on other dogs! Also she runs like the wind. She loves to play with big dogs. Outruns most of them, and if they are too rough she will find a safe spot, like the edge of the water or under a bush and wait till they calm down. Smart dog. Little but fierce! 😁🌷. Also I work in vetclinic and you don't wanna know how often we hear that, my dog has a big yard.... No they won't move there, it's like us in the house, couch - kitchen - couch ....and they don't know why they dog are overweight and out of control.

If owners are scared of going to a dog park, they just need to realize that when you're there and for how long is totally up to you. If you go and it loads up with dogs, just leave. If there's a dog that you don't trust just leave. You can always come back. Certain times will always be busier and other times will have few or no other dogs usually. So going to a dog park is not just going to a dog park, there's a lot of control within the nuttiness.

And im talking about owning a large breed of dog and not a tiny one you can just put in your purse/ stroller & sneak inside a mall. Prove me wrong.

I am so fortunate to have a 130 acre park in my town (Ventura) with off leash time 6-9AM. Every morning for over 2 years, rain or shine or wind, I've been there letting my dog run. He's a male pitbull and we met 3 GSDs (all girls) and we do a route up the grassy area and run to a big vacant parking lot; 1 1/2 miles. He doesn't do well with group play with a bunch of strange dogs so we head home after 7. The 4 dogs wrestle, run, chase, look for birds etc. He is CHILL for the rest of the day! At night we walk the neighborhood for another mile! So important!

my boyfriends sister has a corgi that she bought as a puppy and he is now probably 8 or 9 months old and she has never, not ONCE taken that dog on a walk. The only time he gets exercise and stimulation is when i take him for walks and play catch with him. I'm also the only one who has taught the the dog the tricks that he knows. The poor dog paces around all day and and is on edge because he doesn't get any exercise. Then she wonders why the dog acts "crazy" but it's like what do you expect?? he can't open the door and go exercise himself. I've told her time and time again that he needs to get some of his energy out and she just says "oh I will when it's summer". Ugh it makes me so mad. She even asked me for advice to help make her dog like my dog and i give her advice all the time and does she take it?? nope

Hello! I want to let you know that I recently have experienced this with my 1 year old Corgi who was constantly beating up on my 2 1/2 year old Corgi. It was constant playtime and he was extremely physical (herding, biting, shoulder bumping, stalking and rushing, stealing toys and chasing the older dog). Having 2 Corgis has really been stressful for me because of the younger dogs behaviors I could not get control of, he had no 'off switch', would not settle down and was always moving. After seeing this video I started wondering how I could get my dogs in an environment where they could play. Well, it happened. 2 weeks ago my husband and I went on a road trip and boarded the dogs with a local couple who had 3 dogs, 2 large and 1 small. I was nervous about them getting along but they did well. My younger Corgi befriended those 3 month old Shepherd and was able to play so hard with this dog the he, my dog , wore out the Shepherd. For 7 days both my dogs were able to play every day with these dogs. When I got both dogs back home, I have noticed a distinct change in my younger dogs behavior. He is calmer, settles down, less reactive and more open to training. I hope this lasts for a lifetime. 😁 You were so right on that sometimes a dog has so much pent up energy that only dog play will help.them. The money we spent for the boarding was well worth it!Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have been watching your videos for a few months and really enjoy watching them and learning about dog behavior and your training methods. I currently subscribe to an online positive training program that does work well, but it's a lot of work (training always is) and I have struggled with using those techniques when I introduced the younger dog to my home because he was so 'crazy'.. Your videos are a great compliment to my library and they have helped me deal with these 2 energetic dogs.I am a lot less stressed now that both dogs are calmed down. I can't thank you enough for sharing this information! PS: prior to their boarding, I was having to kennel them in order to stop them from constantly running around the house playing with each other, chasing, biting, etc. It was distracting me from working. (I work from home). Now they can be out and will even nap at.the same.time without being in the kennel. ♥️♥️♥️ They also can be in the backseat of my car without brawling. The older one doesn't steal toys as much either. There are so many behaviors that have improved it's crazy.

I have a hard time going to dog parks, because I don't trust other people to watch their dog, or to understand that maybe letting their dog be a bully and scare/ hurt / roll other dogs is okay. Sometimes there are people who think if they have a dog that is out of control and growling and nipping other dogs that that means their dog is the toughest and that that is a cool thing Maybe I am over reacting, but sometimes people just suck. And often there is that person who doesn't want their dog to play at all, or they think a happy running playful dog is being bad so they are super harsh and yank / hit their dog. All in all, I have had not great luck at dog parks. But I will try again with my Doberman puppy ( 6 month Odin). In the past it was with my English Bulldogs and they were super chill dogs that didn't need the amount of exercise and stimulation Odin needs.

I got a lot out of this video. I did not know that sometimes dogs with pent up energy will shake. Shaking is not always fear. This is news to me. Helps me understand my Australian Kelpie/Blue Heeler Mix. My pup is like Superman. Faster than a speeding bullet. Leaps tall buildings in a single bound! She is a rescue. Only had her 4 months now. I have been trying to walk her 2-4 miles everyday.I try to change the route often. I take her to my loft complex's dog run when there are no other dogs twice a day so she can run hard. She loves the herding ball, Chuck It and Flirty Pole. I am trying to get her used to being around other dogs but the progress is slow. She came from an environment where she was being attacked by another dog in the household from the time she was adopted at 9 months until I adopted her at 2 1/2 years old. But she gets along really nicely with my 3 cats. There were no cats in her life until now. She is great with people too! I hope that eventually she will not be afraid of other dogs. She likes to watch them in a big dog park nearby but on walks she is still reactive if a dog is within 10 feet of us. Your videos are helping me learn how to stay calm and handle her the proper way for corrections. Thanks!

I wonder if some of her funky jumps are just her collie instinct? I grew up in sheep and cattle country in Australia. Of course sheepdogs are taught not to be aggressive with sheep, but watch videos of working dogs in the yards. They are extremely agile and leap up and scramble over the backs of the sheep all the time in the yards and chutes when the sheep are brought in for medication and shearing. Even before learning to herd with the mother dogs, farmers will put pups up on top of the sheep on purpose. Not saying this is good or bad but perhaps it might give the owner some idea of why her dog can levitate up and sideways. If this dog is part Border Collie as she seems to be, her instincts to do what her ancestors were bred specifically to do are coming out - run, herd and jump all day.

Cool watching prince chiil them both out multiple times so it does not escalate beyond play and into bullying, and check in on her like a boss. The shepherd backed down multiple times without conflict.

I have 2 Australian Cattle Dogs, one is a 9 yr old female and the other is a 3 yr old male. My female is very reactive to other dogs and people, she was extremely well socialized as she was growing up with many friends to play with. At 3 yrs old she injured the CCL in her left rear leg, I couldn't afford the surgery to repair it so with the recommendation of her vet, I kept her crated with several short walks during the day, every day for about 1 yr. It healed nicely according to the vet. Then when she was 4 1/2 yrs old she injured it again. Ever since then she's been super reactive to people and other dogs. How do I get her with other dogs for playtime without re injuring her leg. She plays with my male all the time with constant supervision so she doesn't injure that CCL again.

My Corso pup started off as a bodyslam specialist and was obnoxious and challenging when corrected by us in the house. We couldn't trust her behaviour . I was absolutely dreading her growing up. I thought she would be a disaster and need to have a restricted life -I can't physically hold her if she wants to go. Now she's 9 months I'm stunned. She's respectful of dogs and people, she checks in with us and has a fairly solid recall. I find her a breeze to take anywhere - dog parks, beaches. I think a lot of it was she just matured, we also did plenty of playing and training (not enough walking). Always following through calmly is the biggest thing I learned from good trainers like Beckman's. I expect her to get more protective and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't tip over into anti social. It's a huge thing to have a dog companion without stress and it's my greatest ambition with my dog. We are not there yet, I won't know for another 6 months or so.

I noticed you said no more than 4 hours at a doggy daycare. Please help me with this dilemma… During a work week our Great Dane (almost 7 months) is crated: M/F 6 hrs, W 4 hrs. And T/Th 8 hrs. He can handle it and does good, but I don’t like to leave him so long on T/Th, so we’ve been doing doggy day camp on T/Th. However, this means he’s at camp for those 8 hours. He plays with 8-12 other dogs outside all day. When he comes home, he’s worn out, but also seems over stimulated. He drinks a lot, doesn’t eat much until the next day and seems to forget his manners. Should we continue doggy day camp? Crate instead? Change to 1 day per week? Or keep the same schedule? He is timid to go and the day camp owner said the more he goes the better it will be. What would you suggest? (We have a large yard, a good place to walk him and are active with him when at home, but no other dog interactions at home.) THANK YOU!!

My koolie x border collie is a nightmare to get out of the car at ovals! I make her sit before I unclip and and she's 4 years old and she is finally starting to understand that she won't get to the oval if she barks and rushes on leash - one step at a time. Other places she's better out of the car. That pup needs a "job". My girl is a fetch player and usually she's playing fetch with other dogs (who aren't ball possessive). My friends dogs are her dog friends, so meeting a friend with their dog was the best way for me, I was like this owner and struggled with my dogs hyper-aroused state but she gets to run regularly and has enrichment games at home. Dogs learn the best lessons from their dog friends on how to be better dogs if they have good play mates. The pup in this video is just being a crazy puppy - she's so happy playing! (Ha I'm typing this and you just talk about the job!) My pup is the ball herder...i can throw a few ball in the yard and she'll count them and bring them all back. The owner needs to learn to ignore others' negative comments and give the pup a chance to prove itself at dog parks. It's what I've had to do...and my hyper pup has been liked - whereas it was me who was self conscious when taking her out for runs.

This is this kind of dog, who wants to get in a parcour, like policedogs doing it but in a playful way. Don’t know the word for it, but maybe you know what I mean. I’m not a native speaker. Very very intelligent dog. This dog need challenges. This dog needs exercise but not stupide things, in some way mentally stimulated. Very young but very intelligent dog. Like with superintelligent people. These people need also difficult stimulation. Very interesting

My dog (working line Dutch herder) loves chasing a laser pointer. It's the only time that he runs at full speed for 10-15 minutes. He will chase and fetch his ball for hours. I can see a real difference between the 2 exercises. But no matter what I try he doesn't like other dogs apart from one, a Frenchy male. I've been trying for 3 years.

My neighbor above me in the apartments has a dog. Golden retriever and staffy mix. He NEVER takes him outside or to play with other dogs. They had the sister dog but not anymore. It sounds like we live under a bowling alley when the dog runs through their apartment. I’ve tried offering to take his dog out for free. I even got a bunch of stuff for him when he got the puppy. Treat puzzles and chews and things that can help a bored dog BUT the poor thing doesn’t get REAL exercise. 😢

You didn't say this explicitly but the calmness may also be due to the fact that the dog has become familiarized with, and desensitized to new environmental stimuli. Actually you do say something almost similar starting at 13:10... That it's the work of figuring out new dogs that tires out the dog... Video also reminded me of the importance of play for two small dogs that lived together. The mental aspect of the play is something I had not thought about. 7:24... The calmness is from mental and physical stimulation... 16:40... A job example for dogs...

Got a sibirian husky 8 months ago, think 99% of what Ive learned is from you, no dog classes, no friend who knows it all, just youtube which is 99% you. Oh and I should add, my husky is fucking amazing in every single way, calm yet playful and 0-100 as soon as I release him on command. All of this is because of you so THANK you for that! My dog is an exact match in spirit and physical build to this dog! Even in the way she plays. I’ve been trying to figure out mental stimulation for mine. Walks, dog parks, toy fetching, interacting…still has boundless energy. If I could afford it and didn’t live far away - I’d be there with my restless rescue. Okay, after watching whole series, this def helps!!! Will start tomorrow!

Just curious our Vet recommended we keep our puppy out of dog parks till he is 1. Just to avoid having a bad experience with an aggressive dog. She said that could change him for life. We setup plenty of play dates for him with dogs we know but are dog parks okay? How does a person avoid having their puppy attacked?

I know this is an old video, so you may not see this comment. This dog is so much our 3-month-old puppy. He can go and go and go. The 5 minute per month walk rule I saw online did not cut it for this guy, so he's been going much longer. At what age would you recommend allowing a puppy of this age to go be with other dogs to let loose? As his primary person, he's often snapping at me as he has this wild energy that he can't release.

Huge question where do I take my dog to play with dogs? Dark park is last place I'd take my dog. So many accidents happen there and I just don't feel comfortable in such a place? Or am I mistaken? I have a 5m old blue heeler i got from a nurse who got a him and she works 16 plus hrs shifts etc. 😢he was stuck in a crate. He's grown so much in just a week eith the farm to be on. But we don't have another dog nor a healthy place to take him to play with new dogs. 😕 any advice on places etc?

Dogs were bred to work with humans. That is what fulfills dogs mentally and physically. A bad walk is not it, throwing a ball is not it. Train the dog, develop that relationship and bond and work with your dogs. That is all they want in the world. Once you have that, where your dog is able to off leash and calm everywhere, you can give your dog the best life ever. This advice of letting untrained and energetic dogs that have zero handler relationship just run around with random dogs will do nothing for the dog. Tiring them out is not training. I really dislike this advice when there is no actual training happening.

A few things I think are worth saying regarding dog ownership. First: If your not prepared to walk your dog every day unless there's a legitimate reason say illness or unforseen circumstances then is it fair to bring a dog in to that lifestyle? Kids have to go to school and dogs have to be walked. It's a big commitment. Second: Please choose the right dog for your energy levels. If your not an active person that doesn't enjoy being outside for a fee hours a day then don't get a high energy dog. There are many smaller breeds that are happy to have a 30 minute walk a day and a run in the park. Third: Why would you bring a dog in to your life and home if your not prepared to commit to training and socialising your dog from day one right throughout its life? So many if not all of these sessions wouldn't need to happen if owners took the time to educate themselves and their dogs while still in the puppy stages. It's different if you bring a rescue dog home that has issues but in that instance you need to ask yourself if your qualified to train and be a responsible owner to that dog. Four: Every dog must be allowed to play off lead and with other dogs regularly. In my experience I've found it is the owner who is afraid that the dog will not come back or the dog will snap or bite. That excuse is lame because it takes us back to the owner not spending the time to educate themselves or to train their dogs adequately. How will a dog trust you if you don't trust it? Why would a dog come back if you never let it off the lead in the first place and it manages to slip the lead? In my opinion, recall training is more important than sit, stay and roll over. All these issues with misbehaving dogs can more than likely be traced back to the owners lack of confidence, lack of education, lack of training and laziness. Dogs are not born aggressive they learn it.

On carrying weight, be careful not to put more weight on them than is safe, especially a young dog. Ask your vet and stick by that weight limit bec it's not the heaviest weight that's good, it's the work of carrying that's good. Is this dog part hound and border collie? Pay note to what the breeds Only to determine the high level of energy. This dog had so much energy yet so much fear, look at all the times her tail was tucked. Best to all.

hanging with extended family for a week, kids running around, babys crying, 7+ adults generally ignoring my dog, complete shift in behaviour and expectations. She wasn't problematic per say before, but still a significant shift in attitude and behaviour. Doubled the next occasion we had to all hang around. Diversifying experience for your dog comes back with so many benefits everytime. I know this, yet it still amazes me everytime I see a new shift.
