Listening to the crap these two do in this relationship is like listening to a couple of kids. Both of them need to Grow Up!!! Violet is using her “culture “ for anything that she wants and expects. Example she was upset she had to wait for him at the bar, he had just arrived and went to clean up a bit!! Surely she knows that he came to see her and that he doesn’t know anyone else there, so if I flew all that time and the person I went to see hadn’t even made arrangements to be with me the first full day there yes I would be upset. If her job didn’t allow her time off right now she should have told him ahead of time. As for the present I don’t care how common whatever someone got you it’s a gift and you should appreciate it and let them know that. You were pointing out he should have gotten something more special or expensive. Sorry but lots of men aren’t good at gifts unless you tell them what you want so you are wrong there. He thought it was a nice gift regardless of its cost and she barely acknowledged it. No one owes anyone a birthday gift, it’s just that a gift and the fact he went all that way to meet her should mean something to her. I am getting the vibe Violet is talking to lots of men and not really “in love”. Riley needs to work on himself and find someone closer to home that is looking for a lasting relationship and stop playing dumb games and be honest.

I wouldn't say Vietnam is a culture with submissive women. Maybe back in the 50s, but a lot of women nowadays are the ones starting their own business and the husband helps out. Vietnamese women are super independent with strong opinions, so it's normal for the way Violet is acting. If Riley had wanted a submissive girl that dotes on his every need, Vietnam is probably the last Asian country to find this type of girl.
