Factorio has been consuming much of my free time lately. Is it my fault for having little self control? Perhaps. But I've chosen to blame the game for being so god darn fun and interesting. But that's what makes me say that Factorio is a dangerous game.

Factorio on Steam: store.steampowe...
---
Factorio is a game in which you build and maintain factories. You will be mining resources, researching technologies, building infrastructure, automating production and fighting enemies. In the beginning you will find yourself chopping trees, mining ores and crafting mechanical arms and transport belts by hand, but in short time you can become an industrial powerhouse, with huge solar fields, oil refining and cracking, manufacture and deployment of construction and logistic robots, all for your resource needs. However this heavy exploitation of the planet's resources does not sit nicely with the locals, so you will have to be prepared to defend yourself and your machine empire.
Join forces with other players in cooperative Multiplayer, create huge factories, collaborate and delegate tasks between you and your friends. Add mods to increase your enjoyment, from small tweak and helper mods to complete game overhauls, Factorio's ground-up Modding support has allowed content creators from around the world to design interesting and innovative features. While the core gameplay is in the form of the freeplay scenario, there are a range of interesting challenges in the form of Scenarios. If you don't find any maps or scenarios you enjoy, you can create your own with the in-game Map Editor, place down entities, enemies, and terrain in any way you like, and even add your own custom script to make for interesting gameplay.

Yeah, **in early game** its a good setup to have boxes directly on rock's drill. having furnace for copper and steel's drill too. but for coal, make drills feeding eachothers (recommended to have 8 drills before making a good electric miner setup

The best part is the fact that the gameplay loop is constant problem solving. You don't mindlessly play this game. It constantly keeps you cognitively stimulated. You have to plan, think, do math if you want to do it right. Most other games if you spend too much time playing them your brain falls asleep from doing mindless repetitive tasks and you come out of it feeling like a zombie. You feel lazy, guilty and a general lack of satisfaction. Factorio is the only game that I know that doesn't do that to me. I can spend the entire day on it and come out of it feeling smarter and accomplished.

As a programmer this game is my most hated and most loved game. Besides the fact that I've poured about 127hs in one save file. I just love that they put in the arithmetic combiner , decider etc. I can just program my factory , optimize it's production as I would with Boolean expressions in my loops. This is why I have a love/hate relationship to this game. I CAN optimize it. You're dangling the option above my head, this means obviously I have to, or I'm not going to be able to sleep. Have you ever woken up at night having an ephiany why your code didn't work. This is exactly like it. This game is a curse, an addiction and I love it.

Nope, I don't do twitch, and I read the reviews, and if i'm interested in the game, I may check out some game play.... Oh, by the way, if I did watch Factorio gameplay before buying, I never would have got it. Watching _someone_ else play it is mindnumbingly boring.
@9789logan
@9789logan 6 жыл бұрын
Ivellios then it was never called cractorio. You were implying that was it's official name, which caused confusion. also there's no need to defend yourself, especially when watching someone else play a game is perfectly fine lol.
@Ivellios23
@Ivellios23 6 жыл бұрын
Some one called it something, therefore it was called something. No, it's official name is Factorio, I never said, nor implied otherwise. For example, just as StarMade, is officialy StarMade, as it's name is decided upon by the Devs and/or Publishers... but a person may look at it, and call it, "Minecraft in Space." No, "Minecraft in Space," was/is not it's official name, but _someone did call it that._ It doesn't matter if it's _everyone_ that played/seen it, or only one out of 7.5 billion people. That's the difference between being 'called' something, and it's 'official name,' or "also known as." If I said, that, "also known as Cractorio," you'd be correct. Plus, it that were the case it would have been the 'unofficial' title, since official title = from devs/publisher. "also there's no need to defend yourself, especially when watching someone else play a game is perfectly fine lol." Defending myself? I simply stated, "[Me] Watching someone else play [Factorio] is mindnumbingly boring." This is a fact. Now, you may enjoy watching someone else play Factorio, and, whatever floats your boat... but for me, I'd rather play it. There are other games that are entertaining watching someone else play, like GrayStillPlays his 'My Summer Car' series. Very Funny. Plus, since I don't own that game, I don't get the itch to play in the middle of the video, close the browser, and start playing the game.

The graphical achievements that Factorio has accomplished with the scale and style and design of the game are far more than "Serviceable at best". Please try and recreate just the art let alone the mechanisms to turn that raw art into a procedural generated landscape that flows the way Factorio does, for yourself.
@123hgf456
@123hgf456 6 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more, and the quality of art is up to the viewer of said art. However, given the context of the discussion one can be incorrect in making a statement about what would and wouldn't be "up to par". Its all context I suppose. Given the genre, technical difficulty and viewpoint of Factorio there are really very few who create a 2D world as well as Factorio has. Line this game up to almost any top down 2D perspective game out there and it is by far in the top 1% artistically. But you are indeed correct. However from a purely technical standpoint the video creator is not.
@smallg9109
@smallg9109 6 жыл бұрын
that statement seemed weird to me too, factorio actually looks great if you zoom in, all the little moving cogs etc, there's a great attention to detail - even better with the HD updates they've added over time of course. i guess it could be argued that it's a little bit square as it's completely tile based but for most of us the fact that everything can look so neat if you line it all up just adds to the appeal :)

I agree JETZcorp, it isn't clickbait. If you love going into problems and figurering out solution/puzzles you should know how much time it can eat up without even noticing. No idle-thoughts. You brain-gears are turning, constantly thinking, constantly doing, even if you don't have fun, the time will run away just because you are very busy. That guy had probably already put in hundreds of hours before that speedrun. My first rocket launch was at around 90 hours after several restarts...I have since that first launch sent many many more into space. My second playthrough took less than 20 hours to my first launch. Once you gain experience and learn more efficient ways of laying things out it gets much faster, but that first spaghetti-mess runthrough was the most fun and longest map I've played yet.

There's a point when it becomes to much for my tiny human mind to comprehend, a point where the base is so massive and I think I have it all in hand and then I realise in order to make the science pack I have to find another belt load of iron plates and effectively double my plate production. And chemistry comes into it and I am out of room for more belts and my base is spaghetti I just stop with my mind reeling and do nothing for ages wondering what it was I was doing and how the heck do I even go about it? I have yet to complete the game because by that point it becomes less fun and more ARRRRRRRGGGGH!!!!! :) FYI rush to TANK, attack is the best form of defence, you can roll around the biter nests blaping HE rounds at them with pretty much zero risk to yourself and cleanse whole areas of the map ensuring you never get attacked by biters.

Mod support? The game is CREATED for mods. The base game has lots of holes in the design which are just BEGGING for mods to fill. Bob's Mods expands the existing content and Angels adds in proper factory difficulty. Not only that but the modding API is almost braindead easy to use, even with no programming skill you can quickly add a new item. Don't forget multiplayer: That one can easily destroy not only your time but the time of all your friends.

In particular I feel the learning curve is a bit steep, like I had all these machines and stuff but no idea how to set them up into anything remotely helpful or productive. I sort of feel like without the few Let's Plays I've watched and some of the ideas that they've given me (blueprints are the best!) I would have had no idea where to even start with setting up things. Heck, I didn't even know what the concept of a "main bus" was until a youtuber explained and demonstrated it.

The best thing about factorio, is that just when you think you've had a good idea about a way to produce something. You can go look up someone who's done it better faster and stronger. So you can take their designs and tweak them. Ever more awesome are logibots and construction bots. No other game I've played has given me the same feeling I get when I make a blueprint and I watch as my robots make my dreams a reality. Even better, is the modding community and dev team behind factorio. The dev team is great and listens to the community. And if you ever get bored with vanilla factorio there are numerous mods that make them base game almost infinitely more complex. Bob & angel's mods. Pyanodon's mod. There's a reason factorio is rated so highly on steam.

Hi everybody, I'm Ace. I'm a Factorioholic. I am 3 months Factorio free. I needed to quit cos it almost destroyed my life: my girlfriend and cat left me, I got fired, had no social life anymore. I became a recluse, isolated, sleep deprived, pathetic man sitting in front of my screen surrounded by empty pizza boxes and drink cartons oblivious to what date, day or year it really was. Mentally troubled by belts/pipes/wire systems to find the ultimate solution, this ONE theory that will fix everything! And thus I became obsessed... it all started with just one game. I thought I could control myself one game couldn't hurt, right? I was in denial for a very long time even when I finally hit rock-bottom. In those 3 months my life has taken a turn for the better. But after watching a Factorio YT video I feel I can't get a grip on myself any longer! I think I'm about to relapse. May my higher power and you, my dear fellows of Factorio Anonymous give me the strength and wisdom to resist these cravings! I'll stop here and listen to your shares. Thank you all for your support.

I discovered the game last week on steam. I looked into the graphics and i tough it was a horrible game. 4 days later i was bored and didn't know what to do, so i decided to give factorio a try. I downloaded a cracked version and started the game. I saw the menu and all the things in the menu and i tough it was too many stuff. But anyways i clicked in a random thing. 5min in game and didn't know what to do. Tough the game sucked (again) So the next day i opened the game again and tried (accidentally) the story mode. In the first story mode they teach you the basics. I finnaly learnt something about how to play. And then one hour was gone playing. Then 2 , 3 , 4. When i realised i spent all my weekend playing that game. I didnt care anymore about the graphics. I was addicted into Factorio . With only 35h of playing (in one weekend) i could already tell it was one of the best games i had ever played. And ik I didn't discovered half of the game. There is still a lot to i explore. So i guess i should go play instead of writing a comment that will be lost forever.

Also, if you just want the logistics and none of the combat, you can turn off enemy bases (set their size to none). That thing about time, how it just consumes it like a black hole, is so true. I was playing it this weekend with a mate of mine and we started playing at 4 in the afternoon, later on he said "alright it's getting late we should go to sleep, its probably like 10 or 11 and we want to play this in the morning so yeah". I checked the time after that and it was 3:30 am, we were off by a full 5 and a half hours. But I tell you what it was freakin fun. Factorio is honestly my favourite game and it probably always will be, it's literally endless fun. To an "outsider" factorio seems menial, laborious, and too complex but once you get into it you see factorio for its true beauty. I have recommended this game to everyone who has asked what game they should get and for good reason: they should get it and so should you.

Oh yeah, Factorio is so worth the money. I have nearly 1k hours in it, and you have only scratched the surface. In the late game stage you have to balance ups/fps with your ever expanding factory. Along with that, Factorio is the definition of just 5 more minutes, you start by thinking you will just play for 30 min. but then you look at the time and realize that its been 18 hours since you started. My advise is if you haven't gotten the game, DON'T! For the love of God if you want any free time in your life DO NOT GET THIS GAME! But I am not trashing this game, I love it to death, when you play it for hours on end and really enjoy it you will learn things about yourself and all around good knowledge for life, but just know that you haven't played Factorio until you have dreams about it. Optimizing you base and an entire world of yellow belts *gasp*. In all seriousness I would reccomend this game to anyone, but only the people that deserve it. :)

You know I've been wanting to get into Factorio for a while now, it reminds me of the old Rollercoaster Tychoon and Zoo Tychoon games I used to play as a kid, but more complicated. It's probably also helpful that I'm used to half hour play sessions at a time, using timers to regulate myself, telling me when I should take a break and get a snack, or go for a walk. Self regulation is key.

I shouldn't even be trusted with clicker games. Something like this might actually ruin my life. .... I want it.

This video is 4 years old and i still have NO... Fun or interest in factorio what so ever. Not saying it's bad but i can not playing more than an hour or past military or purple science(which is MUCH more rare) And i used to reach nuclear power and purple science with 230h+. Not it's just a sad monument reminding me of my degradation.

Almost 600 hours since Last April. That is almost an entire MONTH of non-stop playing. To put it differently, that is 15 40 hour work weeks! Imagine 3 months of playing 8 hours a day, 5 days a week AFTER 8 hours of work a day. Factorio IS dangerous!

The issue with my factories is that I make them efficient enough to run off a single source at the start, and about 10 hours in something will happen and the spot will stop functioning because I forgot veins had a limit to their ore. And by then I've completely forgotten where my place of origin is and it's all downhill from there. Fixing where I think the problem is (it never is there) and ect ect.
