I'm not worried about the expense of the stands. I'm worried about the nightmares I would have with those two speakers staring at me like droids in a sci-fi movie.

Hi Tarun - I've had the pleasure of hearing Eclipse speakers at audio shows. In each instance I've come away with a very positive reaction to the sound. I found them to sound very open and natural. What put me off was the feeling that there were two large eyeballs staring at me. Silly, yes and irrelevant to the great sound. They are a bit dear, though. There are many great choices at that price. Thanks for a great review of a lesser-known speaker.

Thank you Gary. A less expensive solution for the stand like the Q Acoustics stand for the Concept 30 (£375) would make the TD510Zs better value for money 😊

Thanks for taking a bold leap into the unfamiliar, Tarun. It seems the Dali Epicons have marked a shift in your trajectory in an interesting manner. I have a set of TD712z, the larger (and discontinued) older brother to the TD510z. I hope you discovered that aiming each speaker to the opposite (R channel speaker to L ear) side of your head reduces beaming effect. You are spot on with the review: These arguably produce the most involving soundstage of any speaker. Period. They lack a bit of high treble and low bass, but if one does not want to play music loudly, these are perhaps the most accurate loudspeakers available-ideal for live performances such as jazz, classical, and vocals. With regard to your final query, I actually do use them in a two-speaker setup. I have a pair of two-way bookshelf speakers (down from a series of 4- and 5-way floorstanders) running from a very nice amplifier, and a pair of even nicer mono amplifiers running the TD712z speakers. I listen to the bookshelf speakers 90% of the time and connect the Eclipses when I want to sit and savor my favorite music. Even with electronica such as Boards of Canada, the Eclipses bring out more detail and soundstage than any speaker I have owned or heard. The newest Sonus Fabers are close, but I rarely play anything loudly. The Eclipses are expensive, but the more one pays attention to detail, the more one can appreciate these things. They are truly no-compromise designs for what they are. Oh, and they come with mesh grilles to cover the cones which helps make them look slightly less alien.

Excellent description of weaknesses of a crossover filter…but as a wide-band single driver enthusiast there are other serious weaknesses. Beaming of high frequencies is standard fare…and also no baffle step compensation if you connect amp directly to driver…so you get a rising response due to physics and this presents as a shouty sound in upper mids and lower treble…and an overall rough peaky frequency response. You can add a filter between the amp and speaker to knock down the rising response or use DSP…but these methods are typically rejected by the purist crowd…meaning of them enjoying the extra forward energy.
@abritishaudiophile7314
@abritishaudiophile7314 Жыл бұрын
Thank you Sean. Great points. I suspect they may tried to get a smoother off-axis response by using a steeper cone profile. Also, the phase plug is quite protruding. I wonder if that helps with less beaming as the wavelengths get shorter than 10cms, circa 3,500Hz and above. I hadn’t considered baffle step loss but it makes sense. Although,the TD510Z don’t sound shouty 😊

@@abritishaudiophile7314 phase plugs IME make tweeters even more directional so it’s an interesting design decision…my guess is that it’s there for heat dissipation…that little driver is being asked to do a lot so keeping it cool and linear are top priorities.

Thank you Tarun! After I bought a big TV for my family, they hijacked the living room with the stereo. So I put together a desktop system from equipment I still had. The loudspeakers I took over for free are Arcus TS 100 (from 1985; now Adam Audio) and they still sound really good in the near field. The listening conditions in the near field are totally different from the conditions a living rooom offers. So, I can highly recommend a desktop system for everyone who seeks / or is forced to seek :) an alternative to the living room stereo.

To answer your question, - If I had a large house, I'd have an electrostatic in one room then, a horn system with a 300B SET amp , an open baffle room, a home theatre room with surround sound, then finally a British room with some Hartbeth, Proac or Spendor speakers with a Sugden A21SE.😊

Like the question about having multiple systems! 🤩 At the moment I have a pair of Kef R900s fed by a vintage Luxman L430 and some Denon 800 series stuff. That's as far as my budget could stretch....😂 In my imaginary house I'd like a scale model scenery building room with a left to right and floor to ceiling cabinet wall with doors and drawers, all in white. In there should be a few open sections for a pair of blue Kef LS 50's, supported by a white and therefore rather invisible Kef small size subwoofer. In the center stands the Hegel H120, also in white, which is accompanied by a seldomly used cd player behind a flap, so it can disappear when not used. Maybe the matte black Cambridge CXC would be nice, for sure it would look good....

Great review, Tarun. As you know I’ve had a second system in my study for the last couple of years. It was there to provide background music for work plus a streaming platform to try out new music before buying CDs. It was built using second hand gear I refurbished and upgraded and no single component lasted for more than six months. Then a year ago I bought my Linn and everything changed. Now my main system has been relegated to movie duties. Almost all of my listening is on vinyl and I am having a real dilemma as to what to do next. At some point I’m going to swap the amps over and maybe even the speakers, although my GR20s are unlikely to play well in the smaller room. Finally, I’ve had to introduce a tiny near field system on my desktop to relieve my streaming system of daily Radio 3 duties. Oh well, all part of the fun.

I had a demonstration of a pair of these some years ago at an exhibition the demo room had just one chair in the middle a few people were looking in the door, in the room were three rather sullen looking Japanese looking gentlemen no smiles. One spotted me and I was ushered gently to the chair and they played one track and then just stood there looking at me not a word was spoken, I gestured that I could hear the layering, depth and the hall acoustic but very little bass then I realised non of them spoke any English they gave me a thumbs up and waited for me to leave the chair then they grabbed another bloke, by the time I got out of the room my son was in a paroxysm of laughter saying I looked I was ground crew directing aircraft with all the arm waving and yet nobody said a word. I think they did bring out a bass/sub unit some time later that could keep up with the main speaker. My now much older son read this review and reminded me of that rather strange 15 mins and still laughed at the memory.

I like your suggestion: If being an audiophile means pursuing a better musical experience, through education and awareness of the engineering factors of at-home reproduction, then having a variety of systems with a variety of limitations and strengths is definitely key. I think it's important - both for enjoyment purposes and for educational purposes - to have (at least) one quality headphone system as (at least) one of your audio centers. The acoustics of drivers near your ear in a way that allows direct beaming of soundwaves into your hearing system and also completely excludes the impact of room effects is very different from a speaker system. You can enjoy music in a deeper way, at times, and you can have the informative experience of very different benefits and tradeoffs, if you include a headphone system.

I'm lucky enough to have three systems, built up over decades, two of them with a choice of amps. The main system has an Auralic Aries G2 streamer, Terminator Plus DAC, Allnic Audio 300b SET amp, Kinki Studio EX M1 solid state amp, clearaudio turntable and Zingali Overture 4 horn floorstanders. System 2 in my study has an Auralic Femto streamer, Mofi Studiodeck turntable, Primaluna Prologue 2 tube amp, DK design Reference solid state amp, Fosi Audio class d amp and Kef LS50 speakers. Then, lastly, I have a 7.4.1 surround system for AV and surround music with Denon amp and Fyne Audio 500 series speakers. All systems have BK subs attached, twin subs in the main system. A lot of this is ex dem or second-hand. The great thing is I can tailor the gear to the music, moving from 12.5 Watts of class A to 215 Watts of AB to 40 Watts of Class D.

Over the years I have built a multi-system based on 2 great amps and 4 completely different pairs of speakers. Amps: Pass X150.5 and Cary v12i tube Dac: Denafrips Pontus Pre: Ayre K5xeMP Streamer: Bluesound Node2i with upgraded power supply Sub: KEF Kube 12b Speakers and configurations: 1. Pass with KLH 5 2. Cary with KLH 5 3. Pass with Maggie LRS 4. Pass with Klipsch Heresy3 5. Cary with Klipsch 6. Pass with Caintuck Betsy open baffle 7. Cary with Betsy I had almost given up on the Klipsch since they are SO colored and unbalanced, but I recently tried them outdoors on my back porch, nearfield, and WOW - perfect sound. The ultimate is of course the Pass with the KLH; just pure bliss in every respect, especially for good solo piano recordings. The Betsy open baffles were a very inexpensive way for me to try out open baffle, and WOW, the soundstage and tone has to be heard to be believed for that money ($500). I love and adore my Pass amp - first 16 watts class A, but also has massive power in A/B for the LRS.

As always, job well done. Mike Moffat says that timing is the key to soundstage. These seem to reinforce that point. And wouldn't it be cool to have a Jetsons-like room featuring these guys. At the same time, didn't I see one of them blink? I've had 2 systems in different rooms in the past. An interesting experience as the big system (3-way floor standers and big amp) was better at some stuff but man oh man the little system (15W x 2 tubes and small bookies) what a 3d soundstage. If I had a second system now. it would feature SET amps and high efficiency speakers.

'The Kofi Annan of amplifiers!' - LOL - that certainly isn't a cliché! And neither are these speakers. Another very interesting item and review, I'd love to hear them. They do have a slightly unnerving look of eyes about them, and way too futuristic for my old farmhouse. And looking over your shoulder, I'm inclined to think they won't stack very well! I'm lucky to have 2 systems - small speakers for the kitchen right next door to my landlord, and large speakers where I can play at any volume, which suits me perfectly. I do wish it were possible to rent whole systems, but then we'd have stuff 'leaving and arriving' just like Tarun.

Full range drivers are too much of a compromise in terms of directivity : a 10 cm driver will start beaming at around 2 kHz and heavily beaming at 4 kHz . At 8 kHz it will resemble a laser beam. I prefer a coax driver (tweeter inside the center of the woofer , think Kef UniQ e.g.) which can deliver the same timing benefits , but the much smaller tweeter will have a much superior dispersion . A system like that can be designed actively without the need for a passive crossover and thus eliminate the use of energy storage devices like caps and coils that impact timing. Furthermore , the woofersize of a coax need not be a compromise between bass and highs capability , allowing for higher SPL. IMHO , this is not the optimal solution for a serious problem .
@abritishaudiophile7314
@abritishaudiophile7314 Жыл бұрын
Thank you Gerrit. I think they have tried to control the directivity at lower frequencies but opting for a steeper cone profile to achieve a smoother off axis performance. Also, I wonder if the pronounced phase plug that resembles a tweeter in shape helps with beaming at higher frequencies to some extent. Good points about active dual concentric. Although, I have never gelled with Kef’s active speakers I actual prefer the sound from their passive speaker despite the limitations of a passive crossover 😊

@@abritishaudiophile7314 It's been a long time I have auditioned a Kef speaker and I only mentioned it coz it is probably the most known coax driver . Personally I listen to my DIY omni's which have a SEAS Prestige T18REX/XFC coax mounted upward radiating against a dispersion cone . Extremely good imaging that remains stable even if you walk across the room . Yesterday I found out that they can actually image sound that is coming from behind the listening position . Just try this with your typical forward radiating monopole box speakers (begins at 1 45) : kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIKTm6KfoJt4bZY

I did have multiple systems and eventually sold them to be donated even more. Recently I have been trying to find acceptable replacements for my 43 year Meridian M1 speakers. I had them as front speakers with a Meridian M60C centre speaker and a pair of Meridian D600 rear speakers but repairs, re-capping and they need to be run at a higher volume level that adds hum. I run four D600 for surround but they are 33 years old and need repairs. The current Meridian replacements comes in at £46k. I have recent acquired four pairs of wireless streaming digital active speakers to see if they might be replacements or find a use in the home. They have lip synch issues from video sources (computer, tv); latency is an issue with anything that is digital. Only some solve it and fewer for surround. I have WiSA speakers as part of the trial in the form of Beolab 28. Bass junkie pair of Phantom Golds 108dB on stands, pair Beosound Levels (for battery and portability), pair Beosound Emerge (they don't look like speakers at all), B&O CX100 with a Beocentre 9000, B&W MM-1 because they rock and are now sold for £125 and not the £400+ that they originally sold for. Against the aging four Meridian D600, pair of M1, M60C and B&W PV1 for sub-woofer. Having more than one hi-fi set up for one person is hard to justify. They are usually not good looking sculptures. I have used a pair of powered speakers (analogue only inputs) to test and set up computers, hi-fi and monitor transferring tapes and vinyl to digital storage and for video editing and transfers. Having something to work with a laptop and run off batteries is useful - hi-fi quality, not just "computer" speakers. Being able to pick up the speaker and take it out into the garden to play internet radio or music and double up to use in the kitchen or study. There are good systems for each case but I have not found anything that does it all or scales up nicely (adding a sub, 5.1 surround sound or multi room equally well).

Nice review of a very interesting pair of speakers! I'm presently on the 300b + horn speaker path, but these single driver speakers are certainly interesting to consider as a 2nd system. Other systems of interest for me include ribbon speakers that require heaps of power. Perhaps the question for audiophiles is this: is it better to pursue one great system or accept that you'll never get everything you're after from 1 or even 2 systems, so better to cut your losses and build more than one system?

The first hi-fi I got I bought for my parents. I upgraded it too often. I made the last mistakes with my first system. Great gear just not the best matching set for the money. I then spent the time, a lot of time at hi-fi show and in show rooms of hi-fi stores across London. The 1980 purchase is in my room now. I did upgrade the Linn Sondek in 1990 and last year had a service, new cartridge, motor, etc but it still looks the same. I added rear, centre and sub-woofer for a 5.1 system 12 years ago, all second hand. Over the past few years repairs to the amp and active speakers cost more and take longer to get fixed. Even if money would not be a constraint I don't know of any system that I can simply replace them with, not without compromises that I am still not accepting.

I have only one system really. It is a SET 2Watt with a DIY 15' full range speaker of 97db. At low levels, the sound stage is huge and all the details remain....but the boxes also are big, it is the only downside. I have a second amp, solid state, 25w, which does about the same in a A to B comparison. Depending on my mood, I switch one or the other. I have others speakers, two ways, all over 90db, but they were there before and I do not listen to them anymore, they are stored. My take on the multiple systems question, one Quad ESL (the original) set preferably married to vintage Quad power amps, one Klipshhorn - or equivalent - set up, driven by purist class A amps and one vintage BBC monitor set up (Spendor or Rogers) suitably driven to maximise their virtues.

They almost look like a take on the Scandyna Pods, I used to have a pair of the Big Pods myself (not bad for the price), different ballpark in the cost though. I also had a pair of Omega single driver speakers once upon a time, have to admit that I was unconvinced by those, put me off single driver speakers.

I would be very interested if you were to review the Pearl Acoustics Sibelius speakers - another ~4" full range driver speaker. They use a mass loaded transmission line cabinet, and would be a great compare and contrast to these. They use (much?) more of the backwave of the driver, and I suspect they have deeper bass than these.

My small system is a simple Elac B2.6 with a Yamaha MX-830 which I have hooked up to my PC. I have owned dozen of systems with some components costing over 10K. I feel this little system it is a giant killer. The bass lacks a bit of refinement and the sound stage doesn't go much beyond the speakers but other than that, there is nothing about the sound I dislike. This is one of the best imaging systems I've ever had at any price.
