In the nicest way possible, BMC's audiences, and target audience, are teenagers active in specific circles of social media. That's a broad audience, but not enough to keep the show (or any show for that matter running. And not enough to appease the American Theatre Wing either, apparently. I think they didn't want to risk negative reception from people unfamiliar with the show/pop culture, because to someone who isn't as active on social media, it would come off as absurd or surreal.

To be fair, the ( in my option better) 'The Prom' did perform at the Tonys and yet has to close August 11. so to say 'If it had performed at the Tonys it would have run longer', is not a given. The Cher Show also is about to close and other show, too. It seems Broadway gets deeper and deeper in a Ticket price Problem, it becomes more and more unaffordable for the general audience.

To be fair be more chill changed a lot from it's original stage version (I know it might seem small but it's big in my opinion) also be more chill is just not that great on Broadway like honestly it's not it's better as the small niche it filled.

I really couldn't agree more! The changes they made to Broadway fixed problems the original stage version had, but the changes just didn't seem natural imo.

Do you reckon, now that musical theatre is seeing a resurgence amongst young people, that perhaps the Tonys is going somewhat the way of the Oscars? A lot of members of the Academy are loathe to tolerate films produced by Netflix. It’s led to the Academy introducing phoney categories so that popular Marvel films (like Black Panther) can be nominated. I cannot see the American Theater Wing introducing any such category for a show popular amongst children. All this to say, it’s curious that BMC was such a viral hit yet so much of a meh in ticket sales and Tony nominees. Children do not have the money for Broadway tickets. Hamilton was laughed at and also a viral sensation yet many adults enjoy it. BMC is comparatively a “dog whistle for those under the age of 25”.

I got bummed hearing sondheim walked out, but the dude is like 90 and has had most of his most classic shows walked out on too. Still that must have been such a bummer for the cast and crew. Is it really that hard to sit and watch a whole show?
@badideabearcub27474 ай бұрын
The Broadway version was too flashy, they abused the LCD graphics. I know nowadays there are screens everywhere but my aunt would have walked out as well. The minimalist set of the original show worked on it's favor.

Choir Boy also got a performance even though it wasn't nominated for Best Musical either… it was nominated for Best Play, however. My only guess is that Jeremy Pope was nominated for a Tony for Best Leading Actor in a Play.
@Rebecca-ez3nl5 жыл бұрын
SEGASister choir boy got a performance because it’s a fucking amazing play that had music in it. Yeah The Tony’s had a lot of sound issues and the sound sucked in the performance but there was a reason it was allowed to perform. And it was more than just because of Jeremy Pope.

No offense to this person but what I think really hurt BMC on Broadway was recasting the lead role. The original Jeremy was so charming and talented, he was perfectly cast and made me fall in love with the show. His replacement had no charisma, a grating voice, and was like nails on a chalkboard. That kinda killed the show for me. Just my opinion. Like you said, a lot of the Broadway changes just didn’t work. It felt like it lost its charm
@skye2984 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I loved Will Connolly so much and Roland just doesn't do it for me. He was okay in DEH, his voice was fine there. He sounded awful in every clip I'd seen with him instead. I think it would've been better to stay as a niche off-broadway production.
@notactuallywill36204 жыл бұрын
Skye I enjoyed the Off-Broadway version a lot better than Broadway. The direction in Be More Chill broadway was not optimal. It was not the acting. Even original Two-River actors were not as good on Broadway, but they were great Off-Broadway. They made Christine annoying, they made Jeremy obnoxious, they made Michael talk really high pitched, and they made the Squip sound like a surfer dude. I loved the Off-Broadway version.
@antonspivack39284 жыл бұрын
@@notactuallywill3620 I think what hurt BMC was that there were already teen-oriented musicals on Broadway and Jeremy came off as whiny. While he was afraid of being called gay, Emma in The Prom was dealing with ostracism and homophobic death threats.

BMC should've stuck to New Jersey, maybe do a tour off broadway, and then sell the professional recording after it was over. I LOVE Be More Chill, but also it began when I started highschool in NJ and ended on broadway when I graduated.

I’m so incredibly late to this conversation, but Honestly to be honest, BMC wasn’t the best overall. The mixed reviews were very valid, and a lot of the behaviour from cast and crew behind the scenes was childish. ( See the fallout after the parody and the whole Andrew Rannells “ Cancelled” thing) I am sad to see it close to soon however, and for all the people that were put out of a job.

I think Be More Chill is an extremely problematic musical... Michael in the Bathroom and Rick Started a Fire are good songs, but I didn't like the over sexualization of the female characters . The Lyrics are terrible ... Like in the opening number where the kid refers to the size of his b*lls for some reason ... It's just really really dumb It will probably be done by High Schools a lot with some content edits ..

1. This is a flat out lie. 2. The lyric is Jeremy making fun of himself and the fact that he has low self-esteem. The fact you found a way to miss this when it isn't a subtle thing AT ALL is pretty embarrassing.
