Great video. I agree with most of your points. But while I agree that the old Squip was much better in the OBC, they might have replaced him not because they wanted a new Squip, but because Eric might have been busy with another show. As far as the 'surfer dude' voice, which I personally don't like, is supposed to capture Keanu Reeves. ok, I’m gonna defend Jason Tam (the new squip). I feel like he shouldn’t get so much hate, he was going based on the book where the squip sounded like Keanu Reeves. His surfer dude vibe through me off at first, but then I just got used to it. If he sang the show in his regular voice I feel like the recording would have been better regarding the squip, if u really listen u can hear some really good stuff. And also there’s a new Jermey (Will Roland), Jake (Britton Smith), Jenna (Tiffany Mann), Squip (Jason Tam). Personally i think that the squip song was better on the original cast recording if ur going based on Gerard’s voice alone, the high notes he had to belt sounded more strained on the obc, the instrumentals have improved tho. My friends saw the show and said his voice sounded better live, so idk what happened there. Sorry I did not mean to rant but I had to say that. 💙

Let me preface this by saying that I was initially wary of Loser Geek Whatever. But after thinking more about it, trying to see things solely from Jeremy's perspective, and taking into account the dialogue and song changes for the Broadway production, I have come to appreciate the song as it is. And I will try hard to properly articulate why below: My major takeaway from Loser Geek Whatever is Jeremy's self-loathing ("The problem has always been me!") and it's why I understand its place in the show. We don't really get that while listening to the other songs where yes, he talks about being bullied, not being popular, and not being a presence enough for the girl he likes to notice him. I especially like it that when things start getting out of control, Jeremy yells at the Squip "You were supposed to fix me!" because deep down he thinks that he is a problem and it's the major, if not THE reason as to why he took the Squip in the first place. Jeremy, at the top of the show, asks "Why can't someone just help me out?" We see Michael do this but basing on how Jeremy reacts to the admittedly passive and valid advice (2PG is Michael telling Jeremy to just wait a couple more years and they'll be good), it's not as successful as it would be for another person. Contrast that to a Squip that outright tells him that "his operating system is outdated" (this feeds into the thought that there IS something wrong with him) and that if he just follows all of the Squip's directions, he will be fixed. Granted, I have some minor issues with the song, structure and melody-wise, but overall it's a good song that gives a bit more depth to Jeremy's character (and the overarching story, in general --- by not making everything seem superficial) and leads us nicely enough to the darker tone of Act 2. And it gives the sense that Jeremy knows what he's bound to lose and that he actually hesitates, as opposed to the quick turnaround in the OCR (this makes the "optic nerve blocking on" and consequently, MITB hit harder too, at least for me). But then again, there's that deep self-hatred gnawing at the back of his mind. Even in his friendship with Michael, he thinks himself as lesser (hence, wanting to be Player 1 for once). Was it selfish? Yes. Was it justified? In Jeremy's eyes, yes. He wanted to get better (and who doesn't want to be better?) Was it the right decision in the grander scheme of things? Of course not and because of it, people got hurt. But then again, hindsight is 20/20 and them dark thoughts aren't exactly conducive for making the right judgement calls. Apologies for the rambling but this is just my convulated way of saying that: 1. I respect your opinion and can definitely see why you would think that; 2. LGW does have some merit; and 3. Jeremy needs better coping mechanisms and support systems. Michael is trying (and at the beginning, he really was the only one) but man, Mr. Heere...I know he's got problems of his own that seemingly go beyond just his wife leaving him but they're unfortunately not addressed --- Jeremy will likely learn these things as he grows older AND Voices In My Head shows us a glimpse of that (and Mr. Heere starting to get his act together), thankfully! BTW, I appreciate the honest reviews on the other songs. I concur with some but the new orchestrations during The Pitiful Children is just too good for me to ignore hah! Oh, and I know people have been mentioning that Jason Tam is trying to be Keanu Reeves but it should be clarified that he's imitating the "Bill and Ted" version, specifically the Evil Robot version of Ted. It's a very good reference albeit a little to deep of a reference and I only knew of this because I have a habit of watching old-school movies (that's the "Michael" part of me right there hah).

I agree with a lot of the things said in the video BUT: 1. The OBC Recording isn't a cash grab. When a musical gets to Broadway, it's tradition to make a new recording specifically for being on Broadway. 2. The SQUIP is supposed to sound like Keanu Reeves. In my opinion, Jason Tam does a great impression of Reeves even if it doesn't sound as good as the SQUIP used to.
@pastrymei5 жыл бұрын
I think the old BMC Michael in the Bathroom is a definite win. 1 - George NAILED that “I wanna dance with somebody!” In the old one and nothing can replace it. 2 - The really quick pace is how it was supposed to be. I think the old one captured the fact he was literally having a panic attack when the old one was way too slow to capture Michael’s emotion. I’m surprised that you evened it out. I think overall both albums are pretty good but I agree with the Squip thing. He’s a good singer, but the speaking voice and the choice of Keanu Reeves was just not a good choice in my opinion.

Not to mention the actors who are still there from Two River Theatre started playing their characters in 2014 or 2015 (forgive me. I can't remember which one). This gives them a better idea of their character in the Original Broadway Cast album compared to the Original Cast Recording The characters who are played by new actors are Squip- Jason Tam Jake- Britton Smith Jenna- Tiffany Rolan Jeremy- Will Roland Creepy Stockboy/Mr. Reyes/ Mr. Heere- Jason "SweetTooth" Williams (Did I miss anyone? From Eric William Morris' interview: Deadline: This coming spring, a show that you were long associated with, Be More Chill, will finally arrive on Broadway. You were involved in the original production at the Two River Theater in New Jersey [Morris played the Squip]… Morris: I got offered this role in King Kong in January and about two months later I was having a drink with Joe Iconis, who’s the composer for Be More Chill and is one of my best friends, and he was like Hey, so what are you doing this summer? And I was like I’m going to be in King Kong. He’s like oh, shit, Be More Chill’s going Off Broadway. It was one of those wonderful things to happen to both of us but something where I was like God, I wish I could go along on that journey as well. Just total conflict of time, but it’s been such a dream come true for everybody involved to watch that show grow and to now be making its way to Broadway. The cast album, which is the thing that blew up online and has like 100 million [streams], that’s me playing the Squip. *** So that's why, if anyone is wondering. Ughh, what I wouldn't give to see EWM as The SQUIP again! The only thing I like about the OBC album is Loser Geek Whatever. >

Exactly! Yes, he's supposed to be manipulative and evil, but he's also supposed to be chill and helpful in the beginning. I feel like I would listen to Jason Tam's Squip before I would Eric's. Eric's just immediately comes off as bad. Jason's comes off as a bit of an ass even in the beginning, but he still sounds like he's trying to "help" Jeremy.

I appreciate the different ways everyone approached their character. I really liked the extra video game sounds they added in the OBC vers of Two-Player Game. I also love the new vers of Do You Wanna Ride + Do You Wanna Hang bc it somehow makes me less uncomfortable to listen to than the OG soundtrack (ik those songs are supposed to be sultry but it just makes me uncomfortable and I usually skip it on the original recording, but I actually look forward to it on the broadway one!). I also looove Jenna’s vocals in The Smartphone Hour. Additionally, I liked the additional songs of Sync Up and Loser, Geek, Whatever (although the way Jeremy goes rlly high pitched on “geek” kinda irks me but that’s just a tiny personal thing) I was, like everyone else, taken aback at the new Squip’s voice, but like I said earlier, I see how he was trying to approach the role in a new way and I appreciate it. But I do miss the “just take me inside you” in Upgrade and the whole “picture this” verse in The Squip Song.

Honestly, I like the old one more. The squip sounds like a high surfer dude, but maybe if I actually saw the recent one live I would have a different opinion. Honestly tho it would have been way worse without Gerard as rich again and George as Michael again.

I think that Michael in the OBC was more for fan service. Like there were parts where they made him like, more gay, (if that makes sense) but it didn’t go with Michael’s character it was just to please the audience

Alright, I have a different opinion on Loser Geek Whatever (LGW). That song is so necessary to the plot, and I cried when I saw it live because it is kinda deep. So basically in OCR, it’s like the Squip just says “Jeremy just take the upgrade.” And he does. He just chooses to do that and takes the option. But in the OBR, he has LGW to sing and it develops his character and makes reasoning why he chooses to stay with the Squip. ALSO THE ACOUSTIC IS SAD AS HELL FOR LGW. But that’s just my theory A MUSICAL TH- oh wait.

I honestly prefer the writing of the Broadway version. The lyrics feel more refined and the production is on point. But the original has a better cast.
@ProfessorWalnut4 жыл бұрын
I think the inclusion of Loser Geek Whatever gave Jeremy more of an arc than in the Two River album. At the end of the first act of the Two River version, the audience recognizes that Jeremy is a bad friend who did a bad thing. In the broadway version, we still recognize that Jeremy's in the wrong, but it definitely makes it less black and white and validates his optic-nerve blocking decision a little more, indirectly making Michael in the Bathroom better because that's when we really feel for Michael, instead of at the end of the first act.

I noticed many differences in the new album... 1. The new Jeremy Heere (was originally Will Connolly but is now Will Roland) has more character.. before it just sounded like Will Connolly was just reading off a script, but now Will Roland’s version makes it more like what’s going on in Jeremy’s Head. Example: in More Than Survive, the original version just said “end scene” but Roland’s version said “end scene” like if he were imitating someone... 2. The dialogue makes more sense in the newer version... like originally Madeline was a character that was mentioned a lot, but never seen, and in the newer version she’s barely mentioned... 3. Michael sounds high in the Broadway album 4. THEY ADDED THE BOYF RIENDS PART!! (And the “My mother’s would be thrilled!!” Part) 5. They added/extended the songs... like in the beginning of Be More Chill Part 1, it was originally starting out with a bit of music and singing, but then in the new album, it starts off with a bit more dialog... Sorry if that stuff barely made sense... but I’m terrible at describing things...

My hot take: I was good with your decisions until you said they are exactly the same. I feel like they are almost completely different except MITB. Take this from someone who has listened to it many many many times. I didn’t hear you mention it, but they added a lot more dialogue. If you have listened to the original audio bootleg or the first 35 minutes of the actual video bootleg, both for the TRT production, some of the stuff like the more than survive reprise has always been in the show, just not in the cast album. I don’t like how they changed the dialogue at the lockers during more than survive, I feel like the old one feels more, iconic. That part felt like they didn’t need to change it at all. The Squip Song was ok, they took out the whole ‘picture this’ part, but besides that it’s fine. I’m actually completely thrilled about Jason Tam as the new Squip, I do like Eric William Morris more, but I don’t think the way they portray the new Squip is as bad as everyone’s saying. It just seems like everyone is overreacting to it. I absolutely loved how they added that first new bit to Be More Chill Pt. 1. I find myself listening to it all time, plus I love the little ‘aw’ from Jeremy after the Squip says that everything about him is terrible. Will Roland’s portrayal of Jeremy is more sad to me and I love it. The new Do You Wanna Ride personally has to go to the original, my only nitpick is that at the end of the new version, Brooke’s ‘piiiiiiIIIIiIiIiIinkberry’ felt so weird. I know she’s actually trying to impress Jeremy more or something in the new one, but I just liked how her last note in the original was legitimately good. Sync Up was pretty good mostly because of how they showed more of the characters actual personality. Upgrade was really good, it’s still going to take some time for me to get used to the whole ‘I’m tired of being the person that everyone thinks that I am’ thing, but again, it adds to the characters. I must strongly disagree about Loser Geek Whatever, it is honestly my new favorite song (more on that soon), and I’m even auditioning with it for my next show!! I really love it and I think it actually DOES serve a purpose in the musical. It was put in because I think most people didn’t seem to get that Jeremy didn’t just straight up want to hurt Michael. Most people just assumed he’s just messed up like that. But this song explains more of his inner turmoil and self-doubt and how it’s been building up so much that he can’t contain it anymore, which is why he feels like the Squip is only other option. He doesn’t want to go back to hating himself as much as he did. How he still felt alone even with Michael by his side. I could talk about this song for hours but this comment is long enough. Halloween was really really good, the new bridge they added was the cherry on top. Do You Wanna Hang felt more real and I loved it so much. I liked the original Michael in the Bathroom better. I noticed the slowness in the new one too, but also I could hear that he said ‘bathroom’ really weird. The way he said it was just…weird. I can’t explain it. But that’s why I like the original better. The Smartphone Hour was done better in the new one, it felt more lively. The Pants Song? MUCH more emotional in the newer one. Almost had me to tears. Even though they had the perfect opportunity to add more of Michael’s burning stuff dialogue but didn’t. Now, The Pitiful Children used to be my absolute favorite song too, but as you said, the original did it better. But it’s not because I don’t like Jason’s voice, I love it in fact!!! But what really made me dislike it was how they essentially changed almost all the lyrics, like we get it. Jeremy likes Christine. WE KNOW. YOU DON’T HAVE TO SAY THAT THE ENTIRE SONG. I also don’t like the whole LONG opera type sing-y bit they added in. It takes me out of the song completely. I refuse to listen to the new one as well. The Play also has to go to the original. I don’t like how they took out, ‘my Squip says I can make it all the way to Broadway!’ and other things, but I also liked how they added some dialogue. Everything else I liked and had no opinions about. I think that’s it. Hopefully.
