This song is about Quentin Crisp, a gay Englishman who survived decades of vicious treatment at the hands of his fellow countrymen, until he decided to move to New York. There, he finally found a home where he was accepted and even lionized. His courage was extraordinary, and yet he would say he wasn't courageous at all - merely stubborn. He just refused to be bullied into changing who he was, and preferred to take beatings (many, over many years) rather than deny his own self. He couldn't help being who he was, and never, ever, EVER apologized. (This got him into trouble near the end of his life, when he refused to apologize for a careless remark that pissed off pretty much everybody.) I wish I could have met him.

Reading Quentins' books as a teenager gave me the courage to be myself regardless of what others thought. One quote stayed with me, 'I am not a drop out, I was never 'in.''

Sting's album The Dream of the Blue Turtles is a wonderful departure from his normal rock catalog. He gathered talented jazz musicians, like Branford Marsalis on sax, to accompany him. Fortress Around Your Heart and If You Love Someone Set Them Free are two of my faves. Sting's entire catalog is a rabbit hole you won't regret.

Branfod was accused of "selling out" to pop music with this, someone must have thought he would care...

This song is an homage to actor, writer and gay icon Quentin Crisp, the old man you see in the video. He moved from England to New York in 1980/81, it is a song about Sting's deep admiration for his courage and character.

@@annesmith2259Was it the english tv movie "The naked civil servant" with Jonh Hurt? Quentin was the epitome of class, died in 1999 but is unforgettable.

Sting is in my top 3 favorite artists! Most of the songs in his solo career are a mostly jazzy feel -- Such a different departure from The Police! Thanks for this great reaction choice! ✌💙✌

Sting was the lead singer of the Police! He went solo in the eighties! He had an extremely successful careers with both! That is the amazing Branford Marsalis in the video playing the soprano saxophone! I love this song! Sting could do no wrong!❤❤

"If manners maketh man" and "at night a candle's brighter than the sun" are Shakespeare references. Sting taught English lit before he began his band.

"Fortress Around Your Heart" from 1985 is one of Sting's best songs. I hope you continue going down the Sting rabbit hole. I also recommend highly reacting to "All For Love" from 1993 with Sting, Rod Stewart and Bryan Adams singing. This is a great song from the movie "The Three Musketeers" with Charlie Sheen and Chris O'Donnell. Happy Easter!

The album "Nothing Like the Sun" of which this song is on is a masterpiece imo. So is the "Bring on the Night" album. There is a great documentary film of the same name "Bring on the Night" about the preparation for and on his first solo career concert. It is really good. Provides a lot of insight to his personality, and how he goes about arranging music. He is a genius writer/composer. If you want another fantastic drum solo you should check out another song by Sting "I Burn For You" from the performance on "Bring on the Night". Omar Hakim has a fabulous solo in that.
