I wore this album out in the 80’s. I was just a teenager but loved it. Sting is basically a jazz musician at heart.

Sting's solo career is amazing! It's totally different from THE POLICE. Trumpets, saxaphones, strings, keys. He surrounds himself with amazing musicians. ✌️

Also, yes, Sting was originally a jazz musician before The Police. His work after is heavily jazzy in many songs.

That saxophone is sublime! For more Sting, check out "Shape of My Heart" and "Desert Rose". Sting is a songwriting genius! I've seen him live twice and will make it a third time for sure next time he tours here in Australia.

I have very fond memories about the time Sting released his solo album "...Nothing Like the Sun" on which this song was also. Together with the album "The dream of the blue turtle" He really established himself as a wonderful talented artist on his own merits after his period in The Police of which I was also a fan.

Gordon Sumner (ie. Sting) played bass, in a Jazz band, around his native Newcastle, U.K. He later got into Rock, Punk, forms of World Music, Folk. I saw him on the tour for this slbum, in 1988, so some of the same musicians -also they did new arrangements of songs by The Police. If, as you say you are living in Milan, Sting and his family have had a villa in Tuscany, for like 30 years. He did a small concert at his villa, for invited guests on Sept’11,2001,…when news of that day crossed around the world, Sting and his band went ahead with the concert, in defiance of the tragedy. Some songs were rearranged; live video and CD. Sting did “a Winter’s tale” album of British religious and common songs of tradition in Winter, but not all Christmas. Sting also had a modest theatre musical about people and shipbuilding in his native north England, “The Last Ship”.

Sting's solo work is a bit more jazzy, generally. Some of it could fall under World Music, as he collaborates with singers from non-English speaking countries. The first real concert I went to was Sting on his 'Soul Cages' tour. Must have been about 30 years ago or more.

This video was directed a young David Fincher. Back then, he directed a lot of commercials and music videos for musicians like Madonna, Paula Abdul, Aerosmith, George Michael etc., but would go on to direct big movies like Se7en, The Game, Fight Club, Zodiac, The Social Network and Gone Girl!

Sting was the most famous for his career w/ The Police as they were one of the biggest pop rock bands of the 80's and had a sound all their own... But the singer was disillusioned by success and infighting within The Police - the 3 were friends, but they couldn't be in a band together... In 1984, as The Police were wrapping up a last tour, Sting began writing his debut solo album 'The dream of the blue turtles'... which was released in 1985... It was also a musical departure from his work w/ The Police into more diverse pop music... It was a huge risk to walk away from such a successful band and start from scratch, but Sting's songs were his strongest selling point and his voice was so distinct... The debut album sold 3x platinum in the US and scored hits like - 'Russians' ... 'If you love somebody, set them free'... 🔥🔥 Sting was able to start fresh on his terms and leave The Police behind. This video was from the 2nd solo album 'Nothing like the Sun' (1987)... it sold a bit less - 2x platinum, but still scored major hits like 'Fragile'... 'They dance alone' ... 'Be still my beating heart'... 🔥🔥 Sting incorporated pop, jazz, R&B and pop rock into his solo albums. 3rd album 'The Soul cages' sold platinum in 1991... and another major hit, his 4th album, came in 1993 w/ "Ten Summoner's Tales"... it sold 3x platinum w/ a massive hit - "If I ever lose my faith in you"... 'Mercury falling' was released in 1996 and went platinum... and his 'best of' album 'Fields of Gold' sold 2x platinum in 1994. Sting's 1999 album 'Brand new day' became another 3x platinum hit record w/ the single 'Desert Rose' (a song w/ Moroccan music and feat Moroccan singer Cheb Mami) Sting has continued to record new albums and tour, but his record sales of newer releases have been disappointing, but he is still a legend to this day.

After leaving The Police, it became obvious to everyone that Sting was interested in trying new things, different from what he'd done before. No surprise at all, this happens more often than you might think; Freddie Mercury, in his solo career, sang a song similar to opera with Montserrrat Caballet.

There is a documentary film called "Bring on the Night" titled after the same album which was Sting's first solo album. I think you'd like that a lot. Good music in it, and some nice looks into Sting's process in writing/composing music. Sting has done classical, he'd written and made an album with mostly Mandolin guitar themes. He's done a lot of different styles in his solo career.

Finding out that Sting leaned towards light jazz led to me to follow more of his solo work. Listen to his album "Fields of Gold" for some of what I consider his best work.

The Police uses reggae influances in a good number of their songs. Sting's solo music is quite varried. A good bit of jazz, some with Celitc influances. A song like "They Dance Alone" uses South American style, the song is about historical events in Chile. The song "Russians" used Russian themed music. Spanish guitar styles are in many songs as well. He is a musical poet, most of his music is saying something. I'll suggest one of his best known "Fields of Gold"

I’d never realised this was a tribute to Quentin Crisp, a British homosexual who came out when it wasn’t that acceptable (illegal even) in Britain, and he moved to New York where he found life more comfortable. Nice to Quentin in the video.

The past is a completely different planet... this song caused a lot of outrage back in the 80's for celebrating a gay man, one of the first works ever doing that that I remember. It was huge in the day. On the trumpet is the great Wynton Marsalis.

The song is inspired by Quentin Crisp, who had moved from London to a New York apartment shortly before Sting wrote it. Quentin turned out to be gay, at a time when they were much more persecuted and discriminated against, and he suffered a lot. Sting pays tribute to his struggle to earn a place in society. In this song, Sting has the collaboration of a great jazz musician, Branford Marsalis (of which I recommend some reaction). Greetings from Argentina.

The protagonist Englishman is the famous and extravagant actor and writer Quentin Crisp, a well-known icon of the LGBT world. Sting wrote this song, which has become one of his most popular compositions over the years, not long after Crisp moved from London to New York.

The older gentleman in the video is Quentin Crisp (the naked civil servant) who was among one of the first to come out as openly gay in the UK he later moved to New York the song is about Quentin he was a very intelligent, compassionate and brave man who stuck by his principles although much maligned for his stance at the time admired by many in the UK. The lyrics say it all If manners maketh man, as someone said He's that hero of the day It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile Be yourself no matter what they say.
