Happy New Year, AC Family! Many of you may be enjoying your holidays at the moment, perhaps even traveling in this festive time! I too am currently on vacation for the holidays and am enjoying some beach and ocean, but as usual ants are always on my mind!
This video explores the life of wild ants living on the remote, tropical islands of Maldives. Being secluded in the Indian Ocean makes the over 1,000 coral islands of Maldives a paradise getaway for human tourists during their holidays, but it also makes it a great destination for ant tourist.
Find out how vacationing ants can impact the ecosystem of a secluded beach island and what measures people are taking in order to control invasive insects from ecological destruction. This video is packed with incredible nature footage, including an ant war and an ant-ant cow symbiotic relationship that will blow your mind!
Photos of Camponotus and Solenopsis courtesy of Alex Wild of www.alexanderwi... Check out his website and order some of his amazing nature prints.

I wanted to keep ants for so long . I'm with my husband since 1999 and he was alway like "ants? nah, don't wanna those little pests in our home" Altough he is an openminded man and likes pets, i could never get him interested in ants. But guess what? I started watching your videos just a few weeks ago. Eventually he started to watch them with me and yesterday he asked me" should we build an formicarium? I guess these little critters are more interesting than i thought" Thank you Mikey :) We love your videos

Yea Mikey also helped me too. As a kid my mom always said "No ants in the house! Ever!" that was 40 years ago, but I came across Mikey's videos a few years ago and it rekindled my love for ants! After a bit of conversations with Mikey we started the AntsCanada Ants Forums back up and I started running it for him. I love to see stories like this and I'm glad I became part of the AntsCanada Family! Welcome and may you always have Ant Love Forever!

In just 3 months I went from knowing nothing about ants, to knowing almost everything there is to know and now I have 1 Camponotus Pennsylvanicus Queen and 2 Tetramorium (one I’m going to give it to my friend). I feel completely ready to have 2 different species (I bought the “‘All You Need’ Camponotus Hybrid 2.0 Gear Pack” and the Omni nest for the Tetramorium. I’m so excited to keep them as a colony!

The spider mimicking the ant is a phenomenon known as Batesian mimicry. Lots of bugs do it but alone there are at least 300 spider species that do it to either hunt ants or avoid being eaten by ants. Apparently some have evolved to even emit the same pheromones the ants they mimic have to confuse them. I read somewhere there's a theory by entomologists that out of all spiders the ant mimics tend to lay more eggs over their lifespan than the other species do (something about compensating for the fact they lay less eggs per sac because of how the abdomen evolved to resemble an ant) . Nature is absolutely bonkers. Fascinating stuff. :)

Hey Mikey, I can confirm that those ants at 14:51 belongs to the Irridomyrmex genus, probably I. bicknelli. I can tell by it's matching criterias and the ease of finding them on beachy areas, specifically here, in Bali, whose environmental climate isn't so different from the maldive's. It's close ressemblance to the Black Crazy Ants, P. longicronis, makes it sometimes confusing to distinguish and I even mistaken my existing Irridomyrmex colony once with the BCAs in the past until I noticed some odd differences.😂😂

You know, 2 years ago I had a near phobia of ants. I'd get really uncomfortable around them, especially if they were in the house, due to them invading my room for a friend's hotdog when I was younger. Now, after being introduced to this channel, I can officially say that I am over this. If I see ants in the home I just let them go, and clean up their trails, or sometimes just watch them and talk to them as they travel about. Because of this channel, I no longer fear ants. As you say, it's just... Ant love. Forever! Thank you AntsCanada!

Amazing where ants can take you! I'm 45, have worked hard all my life just to pay rent and bills etc, and I have never been outside Australia, best holiday I've ever had is 10 days in Queensland and that was only once. And here we have a simple ants fascination taking someone all over the world!! Pretty amazing. I know I'll never get to go overseas in my life time but it's good to see some people getting their lives and passions sorted out early in life. If you don't you end up completely screwed.

It's interesting how the ant-mimic spider hardly ever uses its front pair of legs for walking, but waves them around like that of an ant's antennae. Not only do they have the looks, they got the movement down as well. Its close-set pedipalps resemble an ant's mandibles as well.

Idk if they do it anymore but Australia has enforced cleaning out the bottom of people’s shoes arriving on and leaving on planes to prevent introduced species. It was typically only done for hiking boots, though, and you’d be asked to declare outdoor equipment so they can inspect it and sometimes even quarantine it.

That spider in the window actually looks like a harvestman, sometimes known as a daddy long legs for there very long appendages. Harvestmen are arachnids that are typically omnivorous, hence the name, so it may actually be feeding off of fungus, though it would probably prefer tiny insects.

Mikey, what do you think of starting a termite farm? I think that it would be very interesting to watch since they live similar, yet unique lives like ants. They are special in that they have a king termite that constantly mates with the queen, instead of a queen that mates once and stays in place laying eggs until death. I am thinking about starting a nest, but I don't know where to find them in Florida, and I think it would be cool if you tried too as you are very good at finding information on insects. What do you think? Would a termite farm be as interesting as an ant farm?

That probably won't work. Termites have to create mounds and they can go from half a metre to 3 metres. He can't fit mounds in a formicarium. And most termites are like leafcutter ants. The termites create fungi and stuff. And there aren't many native termites in Phillipines

I used to collect ants from playing in the yard as a child. I would observe them in the vessel I had handy whether it be a tictac box or a soda cup. Bring some home with some dirt, leaves, and grass. They were fun to watch! Sadly, many children are losing touch with nature. With all this invasive technology. Ever since I adopted Maya, I’ve been playing outside on a regular basis. On nicer days, I’ll even run barefoot on the grass with my dog. Next time I’ll be looking for ants Life comes back in a full circle. Thank you AC.

i would also like to point out that the ant mimic probably looks like an ant to trick its prey into thinking they are safe, occasionally. most things would probably not expect an ant to be capable of jumping 50 times their own body length, and so would feel safe within that range. but the jumping spider is likely capable of jumping that length, and probably does so often.

Did you watch the video? He just talked about how important it was to protect native species; and the problems invasive animals like ants can bring. If he took ants home with him and they escaped, they could become invasive and cause a lot of problems for local wildlife. Introducing animals can also spread pests and diseases that natives might not have resistance to. That''s why he's always saying to only keep ants from your local area. 7:35 - 12:50 he talks about it
