Between '64 and '67 Brian Wilson was functioning at an extraordinarily high level rarely seen in a non-academic capacity. That's where his unequivocal claim to genius lies - it's not just another case of just throwing the term around frivolously at a singer or musician you happen to like on a subjective level. I am and always will be in awe of this man and won't be ashamed to break down and cry on the day I no longer share this world with him

Brian Wilson came to my hometown in Northern Norway in 2009. To me, as a long time Beach Boys fan, that concert was magical, even though he obviously wasn't in his prime. I wrote a piece in the local newspaper before the concert where I declared Brian to be the greatest person to ever visit my hometown of Tromsø. I ended the piece with this line: When you grow old, you can think back with joy that, despite all the other disappointments, you got to experience Brian Wilson himself when he was in Tromsø on 28 August 2009.

@@markenetube Brian Wilson was mentally ill and vulnerable to manipulation. For example, those Mike Love credits only appeared years later after settling a law suit. Even if you go by Love’s own admission, his changes were minor and trivial. As for the other names, I’m guessing they may have added an orchestra section, suggested an arrangement, etc. As a musician myself, I understand how music is made, and from what I have heard of Beach Boys, its very obvious Wilson is the creative visionary and leader. He would of wrote those same songs regarding of who was around them, they might of sounded a little different.

@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 Strangely enough there was a documentary on Sky Arts about the Beach Boys last night. Brian was interviewed in bed. It seems he liked to stay there away from the world. @yuntakukai1002 Жыл бұрын
True. It does seem like he is being exploited, as a cash cow, for the nostalgia circuit. On the other hand, he spent years at home, isolated, on drugs, manipulated by his psychiatrist/therapist; so perhaps the people around him now think it's best for him to keep busy and get out in public. Maybe otherwise he would just sit and stare at the wall and waste away. God only knows what is going on with him.

There's no evidence to support the theory that he was being exploited in recent years. I think it was better for him to be up and about rather than sitting at home doing nothing, like he was in a care home. When he felt bad they cancelled shows and he hasn't performed in a year or two now.

The language of melody is the most ethereal, ineffable musical quality. It’s what makes great songs and their makers stand out. Mozart, Chopin, and Wilson spoke this language fluently enough to write long, meandering melodies that were coherent and meaningful, among other skills of course, but this one aspect sets California Girls apart, similar to God Only Knows, and this is what Brian I think meant by citing “the melody”.
