My friend/co-worker Jeremy Richman had moved himself and his family to Connecticut in the early 2000s. He had a lovely little girl around 2006 and she attended Sandy Hook. Her name was Avielle.. I was in the Army and remember leaving Germany the same day I heard the news.. Jeremy's little girl was taken. This hit much harder because I was a new father at the time and my first son had just turned 1. Jeremy co-founded the Avielle Foundation, which was a non-profit that had a lot to do with mental health. He took his own life in 2019. Now my kids are 8 and 12. I kiss them goodnight and tell them I love them, every night. I tell them I love them every time I drop them off at school.. you never know if that'll be the last.

Before my older brother was born my parents had another child. He was very sick when he was born. He only lived 3 days after he was born. My dad got some severe depression after his death, which to me is shocking because in most of my memories of him he is always a happy man.
