I have done some boating on fresh water lakes but never had any desire to sail or learn about sailing until I started watching sailing vids on youtube about a year ago. Now I have way more sailing knowledge than I could have ever imagined. Now I actually want to go sailing. Kinda crazy

Love your videos and just subscribed. I'm on the gathering information like a sponge stage of sailing and this video really opened my eyes to the advantages of a swing keel boat for such exploring. In the past I had thought that their only real advantage was for easy trailer loading and towing. as much as I can appreciate your boat, it is far outside of my budget. I'm very handy at repairing things and am the type that would actually go over something like a sailboat from bow to stern so that I know what I have and how to keep it safe. That said, I wonder if you would have any recommendations for a budget minded swing keel boat that could be sailed from Fla to the Bahamas with a crew of two? Really looking forward to seeing your new boat completed and thanks again for sharing all of your knowledge as well as the beautiful footage from your travels!

awesome, love your videos! Didn't know swing keels existed until I watched one of your videos. Are all swing keels the same? If not what are the differences or advantages of the different swing keels? Thanks for sharing, looking forward to new adventures with your new boat.

Glad you're enjoying our Vids Bill. Here's a blog we did on sailing with a swing keel distantshores.ca/boatblog_files/how-to-sail-a-swing-keel.php Here's another on some of the different kinds of keels including a number of swing keels and centreboards distantshores.ca/boatblog_files/cool-keels-shallow-draft.php

Have you considered a forward looking sonar/depth reader to avoid bottoming shallows?

Really nice. Just a question: how do you mark your stern anchor line? Is it any specific type of paint? (I saw 4 black strips) I use cable ties but that looks nicer. thanks!

Would this area work for production cats with a 4' draft? Also, have you ever come across anyone who used a keel or bow shoe (like a skid plate for an off road truck or motorcycle) to take the scraping in known shoals? I was thinking of moulding one from plastic when we get our cat; but everyone I talk to around me just laughs. No one ever laughs in racing when they ruin a $80 skid plate instead of a titanium frame. I would only strap it on for slow/shallow anchorages. Thanks for your 2 cents ;-)

Yes the shallow cats are good in the Bahamas. When you draw 4' there are many more anchorages available than a typical 6' mono. I'm not sure about scraping into known shoals. We do that with our swing keel since its incredibly tough and heavy 2 tons of cast iron. So we set the keel to draw 4' and poke in using the keel as a safety. Then we still have 1' in case we need to pull back off. If you can't lift the keel then you have to be careful to explore when the tide is rising :-)
