Your description of performing a water start was perfect, and as you went through the actual sequence of motions whilst describing them it made things easier for a beginner to learn the same. I ran my own Windsurfing school during the mid 1980s and gave my customers a clear demonstration myself whilst standing on a board placed upon my dry land simulator to enable them to see the actions from a safe distance prior to them practicing the same using the simulator and gaining enough confidence to begin to practice the same out at sea.

Hi Nico, I learned waterstart a few years ago and I find it very very important to be able to handle the sail with great ease in beach start. Knowing how to maneuver the sail and literally play using the wind without doing any force, is essential (in my opinion) to be able to start a beach / water start. Another little trick to get lifted, is to simply bring the mast a little forward, this greatly increases the leverage to get lifted. In strong winds it is also important to open the sail immediately once you get on top of the board. And last but not least: go fu###n' practice a lot !!

The pieces about getting the back foot under you and tilting the sail forward with pressure in the mast foot are soo true. I remember being so close to waterstarting in March 2020 but always having the board round upwind. Remember that you can still steer the board from the waterstart position by tilting the sail forward/back. Be light on your back foot while bringing the board as close to your butt as possible, then when you feel the pressure in the sail, Pop Up!

I tried windsurfing again after 5 or maybe 10 years and 10 lbs heavier, and older I was having lots of problems rounding up. At 64 my athletic ability was not enough to overcome my bad technique. Great tips here. Lift sail from the leech above the boom. Push down with the mast to keep the nose downwind. Pull rear leg in and under as you lift and keep downward pressure on the mast. Can't wait to try it again! But I DO need to loose that 10 or 15 lbs too.

Thanks Nico!!! I am 65 and still windsurf! But never took a lesson in my life. So probably have all kinds of things wrong. Like I never jibed tacked like you guys do. Neither learned how to water or beach start. I can jump into the board and go out sailing and have no upper wind limit. Love to plane and love nowadays sails that de-power so easily. They seem magic. My main water start problem was my board heading up before doing anything. I can't wait to try your tips! May be some day you can do a video teaching these things to a young old timer like me? I found it easier to waterstart resting both heals on the board. Then the sail pulls you up into the board nice and evenly with weight distributed evenly on both legs. For those who don't have the best knees, this technique works like a charm!

Thanks for the great tips! I really enjoy your channel. I wanted to ask about one issue I faced last season struggling with water start. It happened in choppy conditions when I was using camber sail. Usually the wind direction and waves are aligned on inland waters and when I prepare to raise the sail I need to take a position in which waves are hitting me from the back. Because of this water is floading the sail from the top and make battens bend in the wrong way preventing the wind to help in raising the sail. It is very hard or impossible to make cambers flip when being in water. Starting from the top of the mast and moving down let me unglue the sail from the water but battens are still in the wrong position and wind is not helping. So the question is how to deal with this situation? How to raise the camber sail in case battens are in the wrong position?

I would like to know any trick to avoid walking so much if the watter is low and the fin like 40cm, for example the fin first technique would be an option to sail up to where the watter is higher ?
@pawel73182 жыл бұрын
Great video ! One remark if I may - In my humble opinion for the beachstart pop-up it's better to pull the board towards you rather than to push the sail forward. This will naturally move the sail more up but you'll keep stable position on the ground and have more control. This way if you feel something doesn't go right you can make a step back instead of fail it all by dropping the sail or falling down.
@Nico_GER72 жыл бұрын
Hi Paweł, both at the same time actually. Dragging the board under you will automatically make the sail more upright and thus forward in comparison to the board. If the wind is light both in combination help :-)

@@MaoZedong2225 Only one: step up on the board. Literally. As if you were not in the water, but on the ground. Be active, climb up, don't wait for the sail to lift you up. Help the sail, instead, by reducing the work it has to do. That's it.

Great tipps. I definitely position the board sometimes with my hand while holding the boom with the other which is pretty unstable. Just using mast foot pressure is the way to go. Rolling the foot towards the buttocks I will try as well. And shifting the sail is amazing, always used to swim around and move the mast which takes a long time. It would be cool to have a tutorial on foil waterstarts.
@killurbean2 жыл бұрын
Great video, thanks. This explains some of what is going wrong for me. I’d like to see a tutorial regarding moving down board sizes and how to control them and get going. I’m really struggling on my 3s 117 having used a 145litre board for a few years (I’m 100kg). I keep sinking the nose, falling over windward, pointing up wind. It’s like I never windsurfed before. Completely exhausting and very short sessions. Some guidance would be great.
@gatesurfer21 сағат бұрын
If your boom is low enough, it’s much easier to fly the sail by putting it on the back of the board. This is especially helpful to shorter people who have their booms relatively low. Just remember “sail to the tail.” And remember when you put the sail on the tail, be sure to push the tail down, so that you can keep the sail relatively level with the surface of the water. The board Nico is using would make this difficult. It’s very floaty, and when he puts his leg on the back, it doesn’t sink hardly at all. Nico is probably fairly light for his height, so it works for him. In strong winds, 6.0 or lower, on a 90 liter board, sail to the Tail works extremely well. And it should be clear that planing and foot straps and harness are in no way related to waterstarting, but having those skills means that you are advanced enough in your abilities to take the next step, waterstarting. In practica terms, that means you are sailing moderately strong winds on intermediate gear. Like maybe a 7.0 or smaller on a 130 liter board or smaller. If you’re still using those floppy beginner sails and those big boat like boards, you’re not ready but you’ll get there soon. The key is not to get stuck where you are. I have seen a number of intermediate windsurfers who have gotten to harness and foot straps and never gone further. They go on long reaches, stop, walk the board around tacking, then take off and go. Fine. but that’s the above mentioned 7.0 on a 130 liter board, so maybe 12 knots of wind. But when the wind kicks up to 18 or 20 or more, you’ll struggle in the chop. Everything will be much harder to control and it will be much more tiring. So you need to learn to water start so that can sail smaller gear, which is what’s needed in stronger conditions.
