I just LOVE Morgan Key! So many areas to explore and amazing shells to find! Let's collect some shells this island is known for, such as angel wings and tellins! You'll also learn the different areas that this island has to offer that are great for shell seeking such as the wrack line and the break line on the bay side, and shell piles and tree roots and stumps on the Gulf side!

Wonderful time shelling with you. Thank you for sharing all the idyllic places you go and the amazing shells you find there. I love the hinged Spiney Jewellery Boxes and was willing you to pick up another one I saw but as you say the amount of shells is over-whelming and no one person can pick up them all. Thank you.

Can I share a crazy fear? Tripping over a branch and impaling myself on those sharp tree bits poking out of the beach 😒. But I'd risk it for all those pretty shells 😁👍 the rose petal tellins are beautiful!

Love this video. I wanted to go to Morgan Key last year but my tours didn't go there or shell island. Hopefully when I come down in Sept to Marco Island I can find a tour there. I love those Rose petal tellins and cones. Are the no seeums bad in Sept? Last yr we came for 2 wks christmas and new years. No bugs. It was wonderful.
@virtualshelling
@virtualshelling Жыл бұрын
Hi sweet Freda! Let me know when you come down! 💜💜 Morgan is a bit more rugged and harder to maneuver which is why most tours don’t go there. No-see-ums can be bad any month of the year it just depends on the weather. If it’s really windy or really cold they aren’t bad.

Hi Shela! No that was a Cerith. Juvenile Dark Ceriths and Speckled Ceriths can be commonly confused with Wentletraps. Similar shape, and often white, but lacking the staple spiral lace pattern of the Wentle.

Beautiful beach day for sure! Question what is the significance of the “coffee grounds” as to why that is the right place to find smalls? What is the correlation? Thank you so much for sharing 💕
@virtualshelling
@virtualshelling Жыл бұрын
Hi Sara! Usually when the waves are calm and “pushing” the water onto the beach instead it allows for light weight debris/shells to gather together. Most of the time, the waves break and “crash” and therefore tumbling all of the small things which can’t really be seen. So when you see debris (coffee grounds) you’ll know the current was calm enough to not break it up but just enough to push it to shore. Sort of like leaves falling from a tree. You need just enough wind to break them off the branch but not so much they get blown away. Hope that makes sense!

There are so many shells it’s impossible for me to see them all, especially when I’m filming. But that’s the fun of virtually shelling as YOU get to find shells too! I missed a really nice true tulip in his episode also! 🙈

At 6:30 and further. I learnt that vegetation can serve as a net, and this is especially interesting for bivalves because you have a greater chance of finding intact doublets there. And yes, at 15:28 an intact Macrocallista nimbosa doublet...Sunray Venus you call it? The largest one I saw for sale on the internet was 148 mm. I got one 140 mm tall. Gave it away with the rest of my collection. At 17:51 is that an intact Arca imbricata doublet? I mean the brown one with what seems to be a byssal orifice on the ventral side. At 21:40 it seems to be a Cardita doublet. At 28:06 two pairs of the giant Cardium shells? If you find one valve between vegetation, look for the other one in the vicinity. There is a good chance only the ligament snapped and the other half is nearby.
@virtualshelling
@virtualshelling Жыл бұрын
Hi Merlijn! Thanks so much for watching! Yes, often times when you find one half the other will be nearby, but it can be a challenge to try and find the pair. I did a video on marching bands matching cockles (Dinocardium robustum) as the pairs are very similar, but more difficult with the Sunray Venus as they sometimes lack definitive pattern.
@Merlijnvv
@Merlijnvv Жыл бұрын
@@virtualshelling there is a way to see if the valves form a pair. You can look at the concentric growth lines in each valve, which must match exactly. These lines form a unique pattern in each shell.
