When I was a lad an old fisho at Normanville in South Australia taught us with red meat in a stocking and once you get them to bite on the stocking gently lift until you see the white solid muscle about 3 or 4cm from the head. Grab below that muscle and you will rarely ever break one off.👌

I watched another fella catching them with pliers and he had a technique that seemed to work really well. Firstly he was just using regular needle point pliers without spikes. I imagine that once the spike has perforated the worm the strength is inherently reduced. More importantly though, was his technique. He'd grab them with the pliers and then grab the worm with the other hand in exactly the same way, but then rather than trying to forced them out he'd put a little tension on them and just hold it there rather than trying to pull it out. After 5-10 seconds or so the worm would gradually start coming out and then just let go and he could rip it out just as he would if he were using fingers.

Great video Roger. Been trying to catch these little buggers for 20yrs. I struggle with the grabbing of the worm, looking at your video I don't think I go deep enough in the sand. Can get fingers on them but as soon as I squeeze they scoot back down. Will keep practising!

My late father use to catch beach worms professionally back in the day and sell to the tackle shops,when he and mum moved back to South Australia he would catch them off the beaches here for bait.They are called a bungum worm here.Not many know the skill but they are super bait for just about anything that swims.All the best.

Great video👍 I too use the pliers and have found when you grab the worm twist the pliers to 90 degrees which stops the worm from digging in and they release a lot easier. This way I've found it to be more successful without breaking the worm . I still can't master the finger method , once again great video keep it up.

When I was (much) younger, I used to catch them with the brass worm pliers. There was certainly an art as to how hard you could apply the pressure as decapitation was a frequent outcome. I saw someone on Brunswick Heads beach the other day using pliers with rubber sleeves over the ends. He didn’t seem to be taking the heads off, so that might be something to consider? Thanks for the videos Roger - always educational and entertaining.

I use pliers because the big worms up here on the central coast I can’t hold onto when they pull down. I actually know an ex pro wormer from Queensland who I took out and in 2hrs using his hands he didn’t get one big one so I figured I’ll stick to what works for me. A couple of things the old boys shared with me. First pull the spring out and throw it away, second cut the knob that the spring sat on out so the pliers can close hard without hitting those two knobs as you’ll need the extra force to pin the big ones. Third only use the pliers to pin them to stop the retreating the get your other hand and pin the worm as far down as you can between the index and forefinger like you would hold a cigarette, then once you have it with both hands start pulling in a steady consistent movement and if your on a big one it will be as thick as your pinky and about 4ft long 🤙 I’m more than happy to show you if you want to come up
@RogerOsborneFishing
@RogerOsborneFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brice, Thanks for your info. I know when catching really big beach worms with your fingers, it's a bit like weight lifting, you have to psych yourself and hold on really hard. I actually grip the big ones so tightly that I sometimes break their heads off with my fingers. When using my fingers I find it best to pull the worms out straight away before they get set. Would love to come up and join you sometime. Which beaches do you worm? My brother lives at Chitaway Point on the Central Coast. Roger

Can’t for the life of me catch em with my fingers. Have used pliers for about 10 years. I think once you master catching em without pliers, definitely better because you don’t damage the worms and they would last longer if you wana use em next day or so. I also have a huge passion for saltwater aquariums, and always wondered if you could keep worms alive for a few days (or months? Or sustainably even?) in a saltwater tank. I mean I always though if I can keep coral alive and healthy and even grow and multiply them, surely worms would stay healthy in a tank? Never been able to do the experiment though!

Hi Simon, I keep my worms in a cool place in the house like the garage or laundry and off the ground. I haven't tried putting them in the fridge, my thoughts are that 4 degrees is a fair bit colder than the worms natural environment.

Nice video Roger. Speaking from my own experience, I agree with everthing you said in the video, and want to further add that pliers probably work better with large worms, especially those stumpies with green head. Because they are much sicker than the slimies, it's less easier to chop their heads off. And they are so strong, I have found it extremely difficult to pinch them by fingers without letting them slip through. By using the pliers, I can pinch them easily and use both hands to slowly pull them out like you did in the video. When it comes to catching slimies, I found it much easier with hand. They are nowhere near as strong as the stumpies, and I was able to apply your method pulling them out single handedly. So now I apply both methods according to the size of the worm. If it's a normal size worm, I don't hesitate to use my hand. If it's a big dog - usually pretty obvious from the look of its head, I will use the pliers. This approach has been working rather well foe me lately. Hope this presents another option for the viewers. 😊

Revisiting your video Roger, after watching it again I picked up on something and that was the speed watching you get them out , I found using the pliers etc I was hesitant in pulling them up , I think that was my mistake letting the worm get settled as you said and losing them and breaking them off , I live inland so only get to go fishing 1 time a year on the coasts for a few days only so time is very limited for me . Thanks for the videos Roger. I have gotten pretty good at worming since watching your other worming videos over and over! Plus lots of practice! I was keen to try the pliers, more before I got the knack of catching with my fingers. So ended up buying a pair when I was at Anaconda. Well, they are now going to be used as general fishing pliers! I found it so hard! I actually got the first worm I tried them on, almost chop his head off in the process! After that I was just cutting them all straight off! It got to the point where it was just cruel and I went back to my fingers and got heaps! I had a final go with the pliers before leaving, I managed 2.5! I think the trick is not snapping the pliers tight! But I'll stick to using my fingers after that! At least I'll have a nice pair of fishing pliers that won't rust!
