Beachy Succulent Garden Install in Oceanside Day 1

It’s groundbreaking day in Oceanside! Hannah, Mel, Cullen and I worked on spreading soil and sinking some plants along the side of the house. I am really excited to be working with a bunch of Tom’s beautiful bromeliads from Waterwise Botanicals. Also, the Love is in the Garden merchandise is back in the teespring shop for the month of August. On August 10, it’ll be Greg’s two year anniversary since his sudden cardiac arrest. Even when you use the "usual suspects" you always come up with a different result! I especially enjoy seeing how your style changes with time and inspirations from, say, a project like the Coral Reef. The bromeliads in this installation are 🔥🔥🔥

Would love to see you do a mound - start to finish. That may sound kind of simple, but I am starting a tapestry garden with mostly Zone 6 or below succulents. I have already poured a base of crushed grey stone to help to hold the heat. Really like your mounding design.

Those agave attenuatas are called Ray of Light. The verigation is very stable and they are in commerce. I bought one last year from our local nursery for $40 / 2 gal pot. This year they were $70 for same size. My mature plant has not pupped yet.

Good call on the Kalanchoe tomentosa; at 10 dollars a can for those lush plants, it is a great price too. Those are very child-friendly. I'm very interested in your use of compost for that narrow strip. You mentioned that it still smelled funky, so is it safe to use for some of those succulents at this point?

The sun moves very quickly through this bed and the weather is maritime and mild year round.
