he built his house on protected land without planning permission (what we call our permit to build a house here in the UK). he owned the land, but here in the UK you have to get permission from the local council to build a permanent structure. some areas of land are also considered to be protected (for nature/aesthetic reasons) and are pretty much never allowed to be built on essentially he knew what he was doing was wrong... that's the whole reason for hiding his house in a giant haystack for 4 years... he was trying to exploit a loop hole that would've gotten around all that... he was a chancer, and his chance didn't pay off personally I feel they were maybe a little hard on him... on the other hand maybe its a good thing... the law is there for a reason and they don't want to encourage people to abuse a loophole essentially, he should've sold his protected land and bought some in an area where he would've been allowed to build his house... there is plenty of land that is advertised as having planning permission already, meaning it'd be easier to submit updated plans and have a high likelihood of them being accepted fairly quickly... it can go for a bit of a premium, but he wouldn't have had his house torn down

It really takes a special person to go through the action of literally taring down someone's home all out of technicality. It's amazing how hard people in the given government fights that hard to make it happen as if it's personally hurting them. It's sad.

Unless you feel there is no reason to protect any land anywhere, they can't just let one person break the law and keep the illegal structure. Otherwise, they'd have to let everybody do that, or get into a "playing favorites" situation where each illegal building would be up for judgement whether it stays or is demolished. That would be no end of hassles and lawsuits and appeals. As it is, they did let him go through a protracted appeal process. But in the end, they had to make an example of him. Do you like wise-asses who just push to see what they can get away with? I don't think that type makes a very desirable neighbor.

Barn conversions (legal ones!) have been happening in the UK for decades. They take standing, often centuries old barns, and turn them into beautiful homes. They're either old brick/stone or wood structures and usually need renovating on the outside to look as close as possible to the way it looked when in use, and people usually try to create everything inside to be sympathetic to the structure. They sell for eye-watering prices as a rule.

I would like this guy to appeal to the world court of Geneva as he was the victim of crimes against humanity and refugee if an undeclared illegal war against its own citizenry . That first one where the guy built his house behind the hay stack. I can't believe they tore it down. Here in the USA you must get permits and zoning clearance to build a structure. Even if you want to add an addition to an existing house like a garage or extra bedroom. If you build this without the proper permits and the city finds out they will not make you tear it down. They will however fine you and require multiple inspection to be sure the structure is "up to code" and if it is you can keep it but you must pay for the permits (after the fact) and the fine. I can't imagine them tearing down an entire house. They should have offered the guy the chance to pay a fine and undergo inspections and if it passed then he keeps it.

No, because it will mean rich people can do whatever they like, where they like and when they like. They can afford any fine you give them but, they still get what they want. There has to be rules. I see where you are coming from but where would it stop? I going to buy that plot of land and build whatever I like, sod the rules. Thankfully, he might think twice before trying that again. They let him wait forever and when he decided he shouldn't be waiting anymore, as a punishment they destroyed what he built. As if the government were throwing a temper tantrum. And what, they destroyed it to have a ruin on the "protected land"? These damn fkers! This was borderline a corrupt-government-move. He shouldn't have unveiled the house at all... That was cool, but I felt sorry for the man who had his house torn down. There's another place in Utah where there's essentially a small town built into the side of a sort of mesa (it's basically one humongous rock). I spent a few days there. The original guy used dynamite, I think. It was weird to sleep in a room with a rock ceiling and one wall made of rock. It was pretty cool, though.

He got some land that included a big mesa, dynamited holes in it to create homes, and his descendants followed suit. It's in the southeastern part of Utah. Pretty awesome! The homes are not up high like a cliff-dweller's home.

I toured and stayed there once. The underground houses are usually just bedrooms and living areas under normal houses as it's not hot there all year round. The opal mines are away from the houses. The golf course mentioned looks nothing like what was pictured. Water is often trucked in and expensive so no one has grass, just pot plants. The golf course is black... dirt with sump oil. I did get a bit of a tour in one of the houses. The guy who owned it, needed more room as his family grew and he had said he found an opal while digging the extension that more than covered the cost for the extra room.

The Port-A-Potty tiny homes idea for the homeless is an amazing idea!!! Way to think outside the box TK Devine!Perhaps the massive amount of money Los Angeles county recieves annually from the federal government to help at least provide tents to the homeless, which apparently never happens, should be sent to you instead. At least in your hands and not the hands of politicians it would be used as it is meant to be used. Well done sir, well done indeed!!! A crane themed hotel would be ideal during the Zombie Apocalypse! Barndominiums are found in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas I know for sure. I've done the in-floor tubing and the heating systems for a few pole-barn houses here in the UP of Michigan. It's becoming a more popular idea for people who want both a large garage with tall ceilings, and don't need a large house also. Sure those ones on the video use the whole building as a house. But the ones built here are better described as putting a 2 story house in the back half of a pole-barn. Most are front half and back half, but if I build one, it'll be split down the center long ways.

Well, if you can go wide enough, you then have a long garage for say a truck and trailer. Otherwise the garage is short. Also then you get say from a 60x80, a 2 story house that is 30x80 each floor. Also I thought a balcony overlooking the garage floor would be nice so I could stare at all my go fast toys haha Edit: I forgot, but I see now I had made another comment about it.

I guess there's some type of problem with certain insurance agencies since it's a pole barn but I don't know the full details on it. It has made one of my friends buy instead of build though.

Having lived in the inner city in various parts of Oz, the attraction dims considerably when you've got drunks and junkies staggering past your bedroom at 3am. My dream was always an apartment that was completely soundproof - no traffic and no idiots. No, you can look at the back of the clock face from inside and see no gears or motors to move the hands. Many clock towers no longer actually work due to maintenance cost and upkeep issues like the makers went out business 50-100 years ago..... That is what makes Big Ben even more special all that old mechanical infrastructure is still working. Then adding to that is how they adjust it to keep accurate time, using old coins, that were common currency when it was put into service. Due to they need the old original coins for the exact metal, size and/or weight , not current ones made of cheaper metals/materials (to avoid being melted down for their scrap metal value being higher than the coin's face value.....) at the time as adjustment weights. Sadly the tours of Big Ben are expensive and/or prohibited if you are a native citizen of the UK due to the demand. Of course that restriction doesn't apply if you're a better than common serfs politician and/or someone with a lot of money(Ye ' old Robber Barons Represent! ), then suddenly they wave that restriction, even if just to try court them to set up some of their business in their country.... Clockworks is an amazing subject, especially the huge towers, and one that is fading as all the people who maintained them are dying, by the 1980's they were already going to digital interfaces for the numbers instead of mechanical clock face. Simpler to maintain and adjust, every bank used to have the time and temperature on their signs, Fast forward to today where that is becoming rarity. As everyone has gone from watches that need to be wound and reset to a "standard time", A town's clock tower helped everyone know what time it was as having a time piece was sign of wealth/luxury. To decades where wrist watches were mechanical and then became digital. Jump a head a few more decades to the present day, most people have computer in their pocket giving them far more information (although no one knows or cares what Barometric pressure is or what it is doing...) , so providing it as service to the community isn't needed, nor worth the cost for the advertisement. No one is looking at Bank Signs to see the time temperature. I do suggest you do a deep video dive into the old clock tours, sadly some towers only have old VHS converted videos where you will see 240 P and 360 P as the high res option. At least we have that though others are now lost to time, minus a few pictures and what text we can find. The construction and history is very fascinating subject.

Yeah that sucks, I thought it was going to say he found a way to keep it, I'm kinda mad they actually destroyed it. Their logic doesn't even make sense, they argued that removing the hay bales was part of construction so that the home wasn't finished until after he revealed it, but that's not true. The house was fully complete, just covered in hay. Removing the hay has nothing to do with the construction of the building underneath.

Fun!! We built a large pole barn house (never heard 'barndominium') in rural Iowa, 1999. Morton is the most costly maker of pole barns. Many companies produce pole barn material.. Can buy/order @home improvement stores & online. Really not necessary to hire Morton to 'make' nor 'convert'. An architect did a basic blueprint, which the general contactor & we followed. Much was basic construction, except outer roof+walls are pre-colored, wavy sheet metal. It's widely available & far less than $80-200k, even for a large structure. Friends later built a similar house & utilized sealed hay bails for most of the insulation! Less traditional building materials are an awesome, affordable, chemical free, sustainable, durable way to build.. Both hidden away or in midtown!

I’m surprised they didn’t mention the apartment some artists made in the big Providence Place mall in Rhode Island USA. I believe it started as an artist trying to do a project and saw some construction area that had been forgotten about during a remodel. They managed to stay for a few years and really made it a liveable space with quite a few roommates at one time. There’s other videos about it on KZbin, it’s a really cool story

I like the design of the pole-barn house in this video, although a little too dressed up inside for my liking. The idea of having the balcony around the edge is what I've had in mind. However, I would rather not put the overhead door in the center, which I think this one was converted, so it was there originally. If building from scratch, I'd divide the building down the center and have that balcony overlooking the garage area and all my outdoor toys. Even at 60x80, you've got 30x80 to build a 2 story house in.
