Cowboy Coffee. Just saying it out loud evokes images of horses, wide open spaces, and campfires. All you need is a pot, ground coffee, water and heat. BIGGBY Coffee Co-CEO Bob Fish breaks down the magic of one of the simplest methods of brewing coffee. And answers the most important question: is it good?

Guess what. Arab coffee is made in a much similar way, by letting it boil (only 1 or 2 minutes), then pouring cold water just the same, so the coffee solids settle down, and slowly pouring with the foam. Difference: coffee must be very finely ground and, normally the coffee is medium roast. Thanks for showing this method. Camelboy, perhaps?

Thank you for this! This is the exact video I was digging around for as I wanted to understand the science behind it. I'm willing to admit I am a coffee snob and I couldn't figure why this produces good coffee. Now I know!

Went with the Kent Rollins OLD American Cowboy Trail Coffee procedure as you just did and it is the BEST IMHO...Simple & Straight Forward while the best part is it is DELICIOUS which is what everyone would prize out of their coffee brew efforts ...Bravo!!!

Cowboy coffee is generally made with very finely ground coffee. It's not measured with whole beans, it is 1/4 cup of finely ground coffee grounds which would certainly be more than 17 grams.

Thank you. Very interesting! If I’m in a hotel, do I put the coffee right into the coffee pot and then add the water? I’m also considering trying this in my tea, pots, which don’t get used that much. Might keep it warm much better.

Hold on, kent rawlins is using a quarter cup of ground Folgers coffee which is far more by mass than a quarter cup of whole-bean coffee you might want to redo your recipe.

I have most coffee making systems, an enamel coffee pot is next. Thanks I really want to give it a go, I’m a little worried it’s only better than hotel coffee though. P.S. I’ve never tried hotel coffee it’s Hario or Aero press when I travel light.

Would love to see these demos with the coffee poured into clear glass cups/vessals so the viewer can see grounds (or lack thereof); better visual, IMO. 'Y'all Be Safe!

I do not look back fondly on Navy coffee... Maybe it has gotten better in the last 40+ years, but it was pretty bad back then... Not that it stopped us from drinking it...

Thanks Bob for the video. One question I have is how fine did you grind your coffee beans for your cowboy coffee? Is it closer to espresso or Pour over?

Just tried a test batch of this with 9 grams of Cafe du Monde and 500 grams of water in a 2-qt sauce pan for 3 minutes... Then ran it through a filter in a funnel into a large mug... Used powdered creamer so as to not dilute it with milk/cream... And sugar to taste... Not bad, fairly smooth... A bit lighter than I prefer, so I'll probably use a bit more coffee next time... DISCLAIMER: My taste buds are dead from drinking Navy coffee 40+ years ago...

Thank you for the video! I just got probably most of the answers to my questions. One main was that I want to make coffee just for myself, so I will use quite a small pod. Tomorrow I will try and see what it will be. It looks like the coffee / water ratio is 1 : 30, I usually use 1 : 15 for other brewing metods. Therefore when I tried someting like "cowboy" with this ratio It was not good. Thanks again, Pavel, Czech Republic. P.S.: I also roast my own coffee, will it be good if I am used to medium roast?

There is no such thing as cowboy coffee! For those of you truly interested in the culture of coffee, cowboy coffee is a misnomer, cowboys were not introduced into the American culture until the 1860s. Coffee however was introduced to the Americas historically by Captain John Smith founder of Jamestown in 1607. In all probability according to the research I have been able to do they probably cooked it the same way that we now attribute to cowboys, boiling it or cooking it like tea and then drinking it. While it may seem romantic, when camping, to call it cowboy coffee, it ain't! You could just as easily call it James coffee, Cooks coffee, Jamestown coffee, or just what my grandpa did, boiled coffee. Unless of course you percolated it, which was the only other primary method of making it in the 1880s and later, untill modern methods were introduced. But no matter how you make it, enjoy it for what it is. Coffee.
