Great review. It's nice to see a quality USA made Bowie for this price. Just ordered one. Thanks!

I had a Western Bowie made in Longmont Colorado. I regret selling it but needed money being between jobs. I'll be ordering the Bear and Son soon to give me similar feeling to the Western

I like the way the big one looks; I like the Dangler Leather Sheath... The big one reminds me of my Western Cutlery W-49 Bowie. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

I'm really starting to prefer the dangler for knives of this length and longer. Seems like the closest clone you're going to get to the W49.

Hello there .Great video ! FYI , Bear & Son are switching to 14c28N for their Stainless bowie knives , for 2024 I suppose .Cheers !

Oh I am really sorry but in fact, after having actually BOUGHT this knife and seeing many differing info about the steel (12c27m or 14c28N) I sent an e-mail to Bear & Son and Mr Griffey Son (Matt) said it's 12c27m hardened to HRC 57-59. MY KNIFE is absolutely flawless in fit and finish, and the guard is NOT LOOSE !!! 😁

I've been wanting a "W-49" style Bowie, was thinking about a Cold Steel, but seeing this video changed my mind some. We have a few things in common, sitting seems to be one of them, hand size may be another, liking a well made bit of cutlery though, is a for sure common trait. That little brother might be more practical for day to day usage, but Big Bro is more my style; practicality be damned. Too bad about the sheath's though, but I will use my CS plastic bowie trainer whichever I get before trying to put the knife within, thanks for that valuable tip my friend.
@michaelrizzo5523 Жыл бұрын
This is overall a better W49 clone than the Cold Steel, unless you want a more massive chopper. And, yeah, the 3/4 size one seems smaller than it is, and the grip on it is really small.

I didn't even know there was a north american bowie style of knife fighting. Just one more thing to appreciate about bowie knives.
@michaelrizzo55234 ай бұрын
It was really big between the early 1800s and the rise of an effective revolver, especially after Jim Bowie's infamous Sand Bar Fight which proved the kind of damage one could do. Carrying swords was either restricted or fell out of fashion, and single shot pistols were pretty problematic, but the knife could fit under your jacket and you could use it as a tool. Schools sprung up all over the country based on modified swordsmanship, then it quickly evolved along with the knife design. There are also surviving schools of Native American knife arts.

@@michaelrizzo5523 that's amazing! I'm working on a short primer surrounding hardware/mail order stores, and shotguns of the early 20th century. After I finish that, I will have to start researching that.

The thin sheath is something good to know going into these Bowie knives, but I really like the definition of the lines those two Bear & Son's Bowie have and that one you have coming looks like a good one also it reminds me of a Randall from the photo and I'm glad that's also a saner ground blade .😊 Good review Mike , I'm sold on the Big & Little Bowie by Bear & Son's ⚔️📸⚔️

Thanks! I have 3 more B&S blade reviews in process, but this design is my overall personal favorite.

Ah yes, the big one looks almost exactly like the old Western W49 Bowie. Which also has a dangler on the sheath. I love how W49 rides. Whether I'm walking, riding a horse or a bike. Or in a vehicle. The dangler lets me move the knife to a better position. As for the sheath on your, don't know what to tell you. Other then treat it with boiled linseed oil, which will not only help the leather stretch, but in the end, water proof it. As for how sharp a knife is out of the box. Not a big deal for me. I love sharpening knives.s

I have a 9 1/4" bowie that is way better in hand than my wild west bowie. Wild west bowie is almost comical when i hold it. Great blade, just a little big for me. I have wanted this set now for a couple of years now. Saw a Western at my local flea market couple months ago. Rough shape for the price he was asking

I have taken to making custom wooden core scabbards for my blades. On some of my more modern blades I reinforced the scabbard with an epoxy. Holds 1550lbs per square inch so they handle a beating pretty well. Luckily I am pretty good with my hands & i have a bit of an art/engineering background so I can do such. I just find that nothing has the feel & performance of a well made rigid core scabbard. I have to say though i do prefer a guardless/ California style bowie for the modern era. Ive been in a few knife fights (been stabbed etc) & I have found that i don't really employ the guard as much.
@michaelrizzo5523 Жыл бұрын
I've been considering stiffening the sheaths in some way to make them more durable and smoother on the draw. As for guards on knives, it's definitely more about having enough of something to keep my fingers from sliding up onto the blade in the thrust. Odds are the guard won't be any real use as incoming protection.

Ive been waiting 6 weeks for a warranty replacement of a Bear and Son Barlow that fell apart right out of the box. My emails are Always answered but always with an excuse for why im still waiting. Based on my other Bear and son knives, it is very evident that their Quality control is hit or miss. Also FYI if you do need to do a warranty return due to their failure to do a proper job, you get stuck with paying for return shipping..adding insult to injury. I really want to support American Cutlers and it gripes me that Bear and Son just cant seem to reliably turn out consistent good quality....its always a crap shoot on getting a good one...a real shame.

The lack of QC from B&S doesn't suprise me at all. I refuse to buy anything from them again after buying a heritage barlow, and there was a defect on the blade that wouldn't allow it to open fully. Emailed them to get a replacement and was told, and i quote, "thats how it is. Deal with it." They may be made in america, but I've seen better QC at a fraction of the cost coming out of pakistan and china.

That's really discouraging. Damn.

@michaelrizzo5523 Bear and Sons really waves that "made in america" banner quite hard, juat wanted to point out that it doesn't necessarily mean it's any good. They act like they're on the same level as brands like Case and Buck, but they have terrible quality control for the price point.
