Bear and two cubs chasing a hiker in Alaska

A man camping in Alaska had an extremely close encounter with a huge grizzly bear and her two cubs on a trail.
The clip starts with the man nervously describing the scene as two bear cubs and a mother bear are walking towards him on a trail in Katmai National Park in Alaska.
"I am walking backwards on the trail backward to the camp, the man says calmly. "The mom and the cubs keep following me and are walking at least as fast as I am."
"What I don't want to do as I'm walking backwards is stumble," the man admits in the clip.
Understanding the severity of the situation and possible deadly outcomes, the man starts pleading with the animals.
"Come on, guys," the man says, "give me a break."
Eventually, the man and the cubs made it back to camp, and the animals can be seen walking away from the man at the edge of a body of water.
Though the interaction went about as smoothy as one could expect with a grizzly and her cubs chasing you on a trail, the credit should go to the man, who handled the situation properly. He kept himself calm, and walked away from the bears with a watchful eye.

@TheDreadedJuggernaut
@TheDreadedJuggernaut 4 жыл бұрын
@TeachAble I've relocated more bears then I can count, and the only real risk is bears with cubs and starving younglings. If you ever see one on a path, just walk off the path and they go right by even with cubs. Filming it and getting closer is what runs that risk much higher. I've only been charged at a handful of times, and every single one of those was because I was getting too close when they warned me to back off. I just see in every single comment section regarding large creatures that they are automatically extremely dangerous. I've had far worse interactions with dogs then bears and I see bears more often. If they were really as dangerous as people fear, then they wouldn't have homes in rescue centers and exotic animal trade. The risk if dying from a cougar, mountain lion, or even lynx is much higher in those areas and people don't even bother to educate themselves before going into those areas.

@@thhall459 I don't know if this will help you with anything, but you should know that bears are usually more chill than in movies or so where they chase you until the end of the world just to kill you and not even eat. If you stay still you have enough chances to be left alone. Ofc if they are rly hungry you have bad luck and bye, but in rest if you know with what bear to make noises and with what bear to play dead it's ok. Also, funny as it sounds, bears attack less females than males, so if you're a girl you have higher hopes. Well, all this is different when we are talking about a mother bear with cubs because they are crazy protective, but it should be fine if you're not close to the cubs.

In all seriousness, this has got to be one of the scariest situations to be in. First of all, it's a wild bear. Second, it's a mama bear. Third, she has her curious cubs with her. @Alex Davies Indeed. In all my experiences with bears they may be territorial but so long as they aren't directly threatened they dont much care about other animals. Their territoriality only typically extends to other bears. I lived in an area once where this was this particular small clan of brown bears and they were very well known for coming across the river to "visit" with the campers in the campgrounds and boat jetties and never once did so in any threatening manner. I remember this one time as a teen I took out my then gf out to do some canoeing and there were 3 bears on the shore across the river and while we went out on the water they just passively watched us and before we even noticed one of them had at some point gotten up and decided to paddle out to the boat out of curiosity. One second there had been just us and then all of a sudden this brown head had popped over the side of the boat to say "Hi!". It gave me a few quick sniffles and gave a few quick chuffs as it then left to continue its swim. We just figured it had been out wading in the nearby shallows and followed some fish into the deeper waters and came to give us a sniff or two, no big deal. I think it was following the scent of the fish guts that had been in the bottom of the boat the previous week and perhaps the scent hadnt completely gone away yet.

alexandraacreator The advice seems to be the same for bulls. Generally it’s best to back away slowly and do not turn your back until you’re about 20 feet away, bulls don’t see humans as prey but their temperament changes depending on stress and season, they are especially territorial during mating season and if they perceive you to be a threat they might charge at you if you run.

because he is an ignorant city dweller who has no grasp of the realities of actual Nature and the World outside his convenient cityscape populated by squirrels, pigeons, occasional mice/rats and cockroaches. Its far too common for people from citys and well ensconced suburbs who are away from nature get this distorted view of all wild animals being just 1 second away from becoming "slathering man-eaters" or something when it couldnt be further from the truth. Most "wild animals" go out of their way to avoid us because they are trained by instincts over thousands of years that we pose a significant threat and should be avoided. If they happen to be near us, like this bear, and are NOT perceiving us as a threat then assume they dont and just stay calm. This is the best thing you can do when you see a bear. This man did it perfectly. Walk backwards and talk gently, dont turn your back, dont run, dont climb into trees, dont shout. Remarkable. The mother bear is especially sensitive, when it has cubs. He was lucky not to end up between them, because the mom sees it as a thread. If you ever face similar situation, this is what you do. Dont play dead, unless it attacks. Dont run, it will outrun you, dont climb it will outclimb you.

People, the guy didn't run because there's no point. Humans are not fast enough to outrun bears regardless of the terrain they're on. That being said, the last thing you want a bear to do is chase you. Most creatures are actually scared of humans until they realize how much you fear them. And most animals such as bears only chase creatures they feel are threatening to their young or fear them enough to run. So if he had ran like most people would have, it would have only convinced the bear to start chasing him.

Exactly. Animals don't have doctors and medicine. 99% of animal attacks are bluff attacks. They don't wanna risk getting hurt or anything. They don't know how dangerous we are, so they bluff. If you stay calm and try to scare it, you have better chance of surviving that encounter.

The bear could have charged him if she thought he was a threat. Bears run fast if they think they're in danger and could easily outrun a full-grown man. The fact she kept her distance and seemed more focused on her cubs, she didn't think he was a threat and was less worried than he was. She's probably used to people hiking in the woods and used the trail to get to her own place. Note: He did a good job keeping his distance. Anyone who sees a bear, especially with cubs, keep their distance and do not approach. Bears will attack if they think they, or their cubs, are in danger. If you get between the cubs or their mom by accident, just hold as still as you can without making any threatening moves. Most moms if you keep your distance will ignore you, especially if you're in a wildlife park.

When hiking in Alaska it is always wise to wear bells to make noise and carry pepper spray. It is also good to know the difference between black bear feces and brown (Grizzly) bear feces. Black bear feces is usually smaller and has berries, twigs and sometimes small bones in it. Brown bear feces looks similar but has bells in it and smells like pepper.
