By far the loudest explosion I've ever had at my bench. Fortunately the iPad has managed to save you from the volume by clipping it to normal levels instantly. But it was definitely in the category of "something I should have done outdoors". The overalls I was wearing did a stellar job of deflecting the airborne debris that resulted from this experiment.
Update. It was pointed out that there is an explosive shell inside that is heated by the carbon rod until it detonates and blows the thing to smithereens. That's why it sounded like a gun going off in my workshop. Here's the update video:-
• Bear, beer and bang up...
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and things I can blow myself up with at:-

The reason why there was no big bang was the explosive material was A) no hit with enough current for instantaneous combustion and B) the explosive material was outside of the CAD casing which causes the compression wave that makes the big bang.

My car has one of these. It's connected to the positive battery cable and tied to the airbag system. In the event of an accident it explosively disconnects the battery cable. Clever really. Changing the battery is a time consuming effort where you have to follow a specific time frame in order for the system to 'go to sleep', about 30 mins in all. Great video as ever Clive.

In High School Physics class, back in the 80s, I recall putting a wooden lead carbon pencil in series connection with a lab transformer, with similar but slightly more spectacular results, as the pencil skined itself and the carbon lead exploded. Equally as impressive was connecting a length of steel wool to the lab transformer, the steel wool almost instantaniously vapourising with a few airbourn tinkles of sparklers.

Good posting Clive, thank you. In my youth many years ago we as typical boys of the middle to late 60's found some unused railway detonators, in a box, they were used on the tracks to alert train drivers etc as to the danger of fog or any other type of incident ahead. Well as boys being boys some were put upon the tracks of the GWR and observed with nervous laughter as the train approached. "BANG, BANG, BANG", saw the boys running away with squeals of delight before the last explosion had stopped echoing in the factories alongside the railway. We found other ways to detonate them and one particular exercise saw some exploding in the Grand Union Canal and the deserted gravel pits which were virtually next to the canal and railway. A local metal working company 'supplied' the pipes and rods etc from their unlocked and open scrap bins. The detonators provided a couple of days of excitement in an otherwise hot and sultry summer holiday. A couple of things we learnt from these escapades was the explosions are better when the detonators were enclosed in something and never stand too close when applying the necessary force to explode them. We often looked for more boxes next to the railway but alas it seemed as if it was only a once in a lifetime event. Even so, it was much appreciated.

‘Things that shouldn’t be exploded indoors’ ..this reminds me of a youthful experiment where I wrapped about 30 matchheads in a copious amount of silver foil.. then hit the resulting package with a hammer in the confines of my dad’s garage/shed. What could happen? It was only matches.. ..well it turned out, quite a lot. There was an enormous bang, concrete chips went flying, luckily not hitting me. I staggered out of the shed, concussed, to find all the neighbours hanging out the windows saying someone was shooting a gun. It took a week for my hearing to return to normal 😆 Congratulations on another fantastic presentation Clive. Doing stupid dangerous things so we don’t have to.. 🙂👍

Nice one Clive. You may have missed your vocation in bomb disposal! However, as a teenager, I proved that a 50 ohm resistor* from an old valve radio made an excellent detonator when connected directly across 240 V mains. *Carbon composition in a 20 x 6mm ceramic tube! I still remember the sound of the shrapnel pinging around the walls of my bedroom in Edinburgh as I hid behind a chair. Blew the 15A fuse wire at the meter & Mum said "what have you done this time?" I think she helped me become an engineer!

I heard such a thing frequently, while my commuter train was passing along an insulation point, where the driver had to temporarily disconnect the HV supply for passing. This is indeed a loud "bang", when getting released because of that strong spring inside of the switcher tube. Switching on again requires air (or hydraulic) pressure put onto the mechanism's working cylinder to stretch the spring contact again so it closes the circuit again.

Sometime in my younger years I either heard or read that the huge Russian power network had backup explosive disconnects. Normal disconnects are not supposed to interrupt any current, which is done with pressurized sulfuric hexafluoride (SF6) filled breakers. We at one time tried to build a new design of the operator for such a breaker. It was to be for a two-head breaker with two hydraulic cylinders and a synchronizing 12 inch diameter pipe with 1.5 inch wall. Besides the bang, there was heavy vibration. A high speed movie (1700 frames per second) revealed that the synchronizing pipe was twisting and the levers at each end swung as much as 30 degrees rotation against each other. All that was because we had the hardest of times to match the tripping of the two solenoid valves to better than about 0.2 milliseconds.

Thanks Clive..great video and suspenseful, too, with the Dremeling-open of the explosive dis-connector ;-).. Lately I've been researching the world of Power Linemen.... absolutely fascinating... and eerie, too, with all that high-voltage AC or DC sizzling and crackling around them and the things they do to bond-on with and equalize themselves with that voltage while they work on the live lines. #LinemenAreAwesome. :-)

Reminds me of " experiments" in my workshop! The squibs for emergency wire cut on helicopter rescue winches ad a service life that meant routine replacement and lots of lovely little electrically detonated devices that were deemed safe once a responsible aircraft engineer detonated then in a controlled environment. As the Avionics engineer this responsibility fell on me. Favourites were coffee cans packed with sawdust,miniature rockets and explosive trip wires, just to keep the lesser non Avionics engineers on their toes!

Looks a bit like a Pyrodex pellet that muzzle loaders might use, but a bit smaller. They aren't very impressive when ignited outside of the chamber of a gun. You need the pressure build up. Fascinating video. Nice companion to the earlier vid. Now I have an idea of what that bang might be during a storm.
@smokecrackhailsatan
@smokecrackhailsatan 7 жыл бұрын
I suspect this is actually plastic explosive inside a hard tube of some kind and cured. Much more stable than black powder through moisture. Pyrodex will go bad just being exposed to moist air long enough.
@bills6093
@bills6093 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't think it's actually Pyrodex. But moisture doesn't seem to be a problem as that looks totally sealed. It's most likely just as Clive said.

rewtuser don't plastic explosives need a detonator? And they also don't need to be encased for an explosion.
@bills6093
@bills6093 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, plastic typically needs a "kicker" charge. Of course it could be their own brew.
@smokecrackhailsatan
@smokecrackhailsatan 7 жыл бұрын
You can set a lot of plastic explosive off with a high voltage electric charge, which would be perfect in this case. Don't quote me but i think this is actually how some shell fuses work. As far as being fully sealed, I think you'd want somthing very stable regardless. Even "fully sealed" up on an electrical tower isn't ever fully sealed. Moisture finds its way in there. I think what actually happens here is that the material, whatever it is, ofgasses enough to make the fully sealed case "explode". The material inside probably isn't explosive at all, it's pressure building in the case that makes it go bang.

When I was in college my roommate and I found a railroad torpedo that hadn’t been set off. We took it home, climbed out on the fire escape, set it on the warming element of a mr coffee coffee pot and plugged it in. After about 20 minutes we got bored and went across the street to the pub. It went off after about 30 minutes we heard it go off from in the pub. It demolished the mr. coffee, broke two windows and the cops showed up in numbers. Good fun and educational.

Cringing safety tip: When working with things that can potentially exert more force than you can a lot faster than you can, *do not* wrap your thumb around it. You want a place for the explode-y goodness to go that isn't your thumb. It's better to have your grip blown wide than your thumb blown *off*. Don't take a Dremel tool to it either: If that were an actual blasting cap, you could've been killed. You got away with it this time, but future teardowns may not be so forgiving to you.

I’d imagine, the explosion chamber is simply a hermetically sealed vessel, where the carbon rods would combust, there’s a rapid expansion of pressure within the sealed vessel, which the pressure would accumulate until its meant to break at a designated spot of the weakest point, this is where the plastic is specifically located on this device.

I wonder if that's how 'explosive bolts' work on rockets when they release their boosters and stages. It's actually just carbon, not a dangerous real explosive
@DavidLeeKersey
@DavidLeeKersey 7 жыл бұрын
Well since "explosive bolts" are structural they are a bit tougher so require a bit more bang than the plastic disconnector. Google "Pyrotechnic fastener"
@44R0Ndin
@44R0Ndin 7 жыл бұрын
Additionally, IIRC it's the nuts that are the pyrotechnic fasteners, a lot easier to contain something going radially outwards in many pieces instead of two pieces going in opposite directions quite quickly (like a gun that fires both backwards and forwards).

voltage does not really matter though. it would have the same reaction with 2000 or 100 volts most likely. would have been enough to set off the charge at a high enough current. pretty sure. though i have never worked with explosives, which is probably a good thing.
