A way to surely keep bears off the trees is to wrap flashing around the tree. Be sure to wrap at least a 4 - 5 feet linear section. I have many feeders up in Western Maryland and have tried everything including wrapping the tree heavily with barb wire which did not deter them. The flashing has worked without any flaws for the past year. To get additional corn, I bought 10 gallon metal buckets, cut out the bottom just enough to drop in my regular 50 pound feeder basically doubling the amount of corn stored between feedings. Using a double pulley system, I will load 80 - 90 lbs but am only pulling up 40 - 45 lbs. I use 3/16" vinyl coated wire rope for the entire set up. I also incorporated loops in the wire rope starting where I start to pull all the way to the top so that it becomes easier to pull that amount of weight up by yourself, especially when you are old and your son in law says I shouldn't being doing this work by myself. haha - This one is for you Brett Ole Boy!

You're son in law sounds like he knows what he's talking about. Safety first, especially when you are in a known area where bears feed! The flashing is a really great idea -especially when you can show your grandkids the claw marks from the bears sliding down the tree.-Annoying son-in-law

Battery will last a few months, fill depends on how many seconds you let it spin. Normally about 18 days on average.

We had the same problem with bears. Not anymore. I cemented a 12' steel pole in the ground and welded a 3' arm at the top with pulleys. And I welded a steel crank device 4' off the ground and tack welded 1" screws pointed upward for about 5' of the pole. Never had another problem with bears since doing this.

You certainly like to make it difficult for yourself. Just wrap the tree with barb wire. Bear problem solved. It works for me.

Seems like that is a recurring theme for me. Thanks for the info.

I just started having a black bear come to my feeder here in West Virginia. Never had that happen before because the bear population isn't that high. My question is should I be worried about being in the woods hunting small game and filling my feeders with bear around? Sorry, you answered my question at the end. Thanks

No not really, most of the time if you're making noise they will hear and run long before you can see them. Had a few encounters up the Camp, they took off running away when they saw me.

Too much woke for a feeder that spits corn for a week or 2 . I think I seen a video where you hung a larger feeder . I was gonna use a feeder arm with hand rank to hang my 30 gallon feeder but I think bears can reach out and swat the feeder

Yeah, that one is small, was good for the backyard when I could easily fill it up. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZOweHiaqqerfdU That's the 30 gal.

I like how thoughtfully you went about doing this. I'll be hanging a couple of feeders on my place up in Idaho. I want to use solar panels to help the batteries last longer. Care to share your thoughts on how I can keep it oriented in a certain direction? I think I may use two pulleys on the chain suspended between the trees, two cables down to the feeder, and then one cable down to the winch. I'm going to do the winching and anchoring to a third tree, perpendicular to the hanging chain. How might you do it differently? Thanks. Marc

Marc, not sure if you checked out this one also. This is a 30 gallon that will last a lot longer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZOweHiaqqerfdU I did put a solar panel on that one. When you crank it up it normally stays in one spot, so you can get an idea on where to put the solar panel. You can also use a vinyl coat steal cable to help keep it oriented to the sun. They are pretty cheap in Lowes.

Interesting video. I'm looking for my first feeder set up to place on a property. So how'd it go? Also - I realize season is at an end, but is it prudent to start feeding now and through until next season? Never done this before. Any advice is much appreciated. Thinking of replicating your set up here. Thanks!

I would go ahead and supplement them if you can at this time. Good browse is scarce, and unless you have some large agriculture feeds around it can only help. As far as bear proof, it has worked, I don't think they can get to it and it seemed to last the full fill time instead of them shaking all the corn out at once. Good luck Sir!

how long does the battery life last and how often do you have to fill?

There is a so much better way to do this then how this was done.

+Jerod Burgess Yes of course there is.

Not trying to be an ass or anything but if you run a cable/chain with 2 pullies you can have 1 pull up cable instead of going back and fourth raising it a little at a time. I liked your video just thought IF you haven't found another way to do this yet since the video is old I would let you know.

Hi, not a problem at all. I kind of used that for a small scale model for what I ended up with. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZOweHiaqqerfdU Works pretty well at keeping the bears off of it.

Great video similar to what I did. Get yourself a 12 foot piece of barbed wire off eBay. Spiral it down the tree. I guarantee it will take care of your bear problem.
