Wow this is very interesting content. I have red and grey beard hair. I used to use the thicker viscosity oils. Now that my beard is longer I'm realizing those don't work as good for me they make it really sticky I use the thinner viscosities I have to use quite a bit of it. This journey is so much fun just beginning. Learning everyday is fun thank you! The water intake has been so important and beneficial to the health of not only my body but my hair is well.

Great video Dan. As a man with a red/grey beard, my beard loves thicker oils, but I do try my best to rotate between light and medium oils and I can tell a difference once I go back to a thicker oil how well my beard styles. I agree with what you said about staying hydrated. It surely does help styling and preventing your beard from being "dry".

I never even thought of this, it just happened to pop up in autoplay watching your videos. Ive been watching your videos and taking all your tips and tricks since i started growing this beard. You've helped me and a lot of other bearded men, so i want to thank you for that. Ive always had a beard, what you would call a "business beard", im 30 years old and Im about 6 months to my first real beard (a long beard) and ive never had a problem with my beard retaining moisture. I have pretty straight beard hairs, its not coarse or curly at all, and usually when in the shower its as if i just got out of the pool, dripping wet. I almost always have to use a blow dryer or it won't style right. Recently ive noticed in the shower after i get my beard wet and start to brush through it, (ill brush the opposite way so all the hairs stick up) and they look dry as a bone, cheeks more-so than the chin. Water is sitting on the ends but it seems like no matter how much i rinse my beard it has dry spots while in the shower. I used to have rub my beard dry with a towel, today i just brushed it out of the shower and by the time i was done brushing, it was almost all dry with the exception of some droplets on the tips. I dont know whats causing it. I work in healthcare and we just started wearing masks again. Ive noticed how its really being a detriment to my beard, i have mask beard just a few times of putting it on and the hairs get all kinked and flattened. Ive stopped washing in the morning because of it, i just rinse real good in the morning, apply my beard oil and blow dry. Ill take a shower when i get home from work and wash it out because its all kinked up and i enjoy washing my beard and taking care of it. Im just curious if the masks are doing this because ive never had a problem with my beard hairs being porous until recently and i never even thought about it until i watched your video. Sorry for the long comment. Its just something thats been on my mind since watching your video. I did the hair water test and that hair just floated around.

Yeah, unforuntely the masks are not friends of the beard. Cause all sorts of problems. If you can get a mask designed for beards, or where a loser fitting coverage, it would be much better.

To keep it simple i have had great results with heavier oils at times, but as of recent tried some light oils and rotate more medium and light with rare use of heavy and i think its the best and most natural (healthy) my beard has ever felt, but worth monitoring as preference may change with the seasons yet again. I mostly have dark hairs but random reds and whites so taking effort to keep them happy with what seems to be heavier oils can help, but way back, maybe due to wash, maybe due to climate, maybe routine, heavier oils was only thing that seemed to keep everything together

Dude... thank you for covering this because I had already implemented this into practice. I have a 4 oil rotation. A light, a medium, thick and 1 cologne scented one for date night or close encounters. Most days it's a medium viscosity on either morning or night and then depending on which I use in the morning, I use the other at night with butter. Rarely using thick 2 sessions in a row unless it's ridiculously cold outside. I will lean thicker medium at times, but since I have medium porosity, I also make a conscious effort to hydration that's what works for me. On the weekends it's harder because I may not drink as much water, and more caffeine is ingested and that's when I go straight thin with only all natural essential oil blends.

Freaking LOVE these informational videos! I would imagine porosity changes what thicknesses of oil work for us as well? Ha ha, obviously you answer that right after I type this! I definitely find medium thickness seems to work best for me. Some of the really thicker oils just never absorb, and thin oils seem to just disappear for me. I bet this also changes how our hairs feel, and how often, we should be rotating in conditioner. Makes a ton of sense, thanks Dan!

But that didn't work for me, I ended up like a grease slick... Not the look or feel I wanted... I remember you mentioned in a few live streams basically what was shared today... You can't go wrong with the basics, a good wash and a few different oils, anything else is optional....

I think that understanding how a person's beard is, takes some experimenting by that person. Yes, u have to experiment with decifferent products. The same way with porosity. This can get confusing.Especially when the seasons change. This is what makes growing a big beard so interesting. All of this keeps me aware of what is going on with my beard on a daily bases. So thank you Dan for this topic.😊

I should point out that after looking around earlier on this topic, that the hair porosity water test floating around the internet doesn't really work. There are a number of factors involved that may cause the hair to float, such as if there is any oil left in the hair. How the hair is placed, that may not be breaking through the surface tension of the water. And also hairs gradually become more porous at the hair ends than at the roots, and I think some hairs are more porous than others depending on where they grow, etc.

Dan, probably unpopular opinion here, but i like the silicone / argan oil / keratin mix in hair repair oils for my long brown and gray beard. It keeps it soft, untangled, and i have 0 issues. I tried several beard oils lately, many of which you recommend, and they are just too oily for me, even trying different viscosities and amounts, nothing quite works like the silicone based stuff. I've used it for years, and grown a really long, healthy beard with it. Also to clarify, I'm not putting it on my skin at all, my skin is hydrated and fine, and i never have an itchy beard.

@@DanCBearded Thank you for the reply, i guess i was just curious about your thoughts on silicone based products if they are not in contact with the skin. The silicone seems to really allow the argan oil to spread and absorb quickly, leaving almost no oil coming off on your hands. Cheers!!
@DanCBearded
@DanCBearded 10 ай бұрын
Really not good and not something I recommend in any situation. As hopefully noticed with my response, I never tell people they are wrong or give unsolicited advice. Hair needs to breathe and go through its natural process and silicone prevents that. That feeling of needing silicone to have a healthy feeling beard is an indicator of an unhealthy beard. Hair can become dependent on silicone and there is literally a detox period that happens (up to weeks) for the hair to feel and appear normal/healthy again. Thats only after pairing the stopping with healthy habits and quality products. I genuinely see no positives to using silicone on your beard.

My beard feels very dry. The majority of my oils are medium. BTMS works well for me but I don’t know who uses that anymore. It’s also pretty dry here in Minnesota and I work in a food production facility where I’m going from heated to refrigerated areas all day long. My beard takes a beating just from that. Great information Dan. Here is my question. Does the hair porosity affect the benefits, or drawbacks, of a cold rinse? You have previously said that there is a benefit to a cold rinse for most beards. But, is there any type of beard porosity that would actually benefit from a warm rinse instead, that may keep the pores of the hair open, to better accept the oil into the open pores of the hair.
@DanCBearded

New beardsman personally (unless you can count the time in highschool where I just didn't shave for a month) and the general conclusion is that there are a lot of great products out there, but the key is always finding what works best for you. As most of us don't have limitless budgets to try literally everything in the market, or have partners with limitless patience for new bears products. Is there a good way to cast a wide net to see what works and what doesnt personally, without needing to obtain copious amounts of care products you may not enjoy?

I am still new to all of this, and really love these videos. My beard has all the colors mainly black but also red grey and white 😂... so i better choose medium to thicker oils. Am I correct??

What a interesting topic! Thanks Dan! I have a question for you - my nephew was just telling me that his beard feels like steel wool lately no matter what he does. He's just finished up chemo for lymphoma. Would that adversely affect his beard? It grows fast and full but just VERY coarse. Any ideas what could help? Butter? Some specific oil or balm?

This video should be perfect! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqOTZpmYgc-ajqssi=tbd-Hg9PnoVQbSY0 and most beards come back after chemo but they can feel different and get softer as time goes. For a company to try, I would recommend the company below. The owner created it because of really sensitive skin. Doctor Nicks= www.doctornicks.com/danc * DANC = 15% off

Dan I knew I had holes in my hair but I thought it was just on the top of my head. And everyone else always calls it a bald spot 🙄

My beards around or just shorter than 3 inches. I can use a lot of oil and it just keeps absorbing but should you really be using a lot even if it keeps absorbing it? Or should it be limited?

Keep giving your beard what it needs! Have you experimented with thick oils?

@@DanCBearded mostly stuck with mediums. Right now I’m using a blend of meadowfoam, castor, jojoba and baobab which is a bit thicker than I normally go for.

Hmm... I did the test and it just floats.. So low Porosity then! Maybe this explains, Why my beard always looks better after a shower/bath then when I just wash it! I guess I should be 'soaking the beard' or immersing the beard Instead of getting it wet and lathering it up... I'll have to give it a try and see if it makes a difference.. :D

@@DanCBearded So I don't know if this is coincidence or not.. Everytime I've washed my beard this last week, I've made sure to COMPLETELY soak it! Not just get it wet... And.. For the last few day, my beard feels softer and DEFINITELY looks better! I've never had an easier time styling it in the mornings! I don;t know if hydration has anything to do with it, But I've had a LOT less kinks and waves in it..... :D

Do you think chlorine would have any additional effect on whether or not your beard floats? I noticed last summer when i would stand in the pool my beard would always sink in the water. I just did the test and my beard was floating. Can porosity vary and change over time? We need bill nye the science guy now.😂 Bill Bill Bill Bill!
