Ford Ranger Battery Install, BMS Reset Instructions

Installing the battery in my 2019 Ford Ranger. My old was was getting kind of weak and my auto start stop wasn't working. It always says vehicle charging. So I put a new battery in and reset the battery monitor system using the computer. You can also reset it by having the key on flash the high beams 5 times and step on the brake 3 times. The battery light will flash after ten seconds indicating it is reset. This is the removal and install process for 2019-2023 Ford Ranger.
I used the computer to reset it and show you how using FDRS. Vehicle cranks right up and auto start stop works correctly.

Got four years out of it. Wasn't completely trashed. But new ones only have a 36 month warranty. Average lifespan is 3-5 years. I used to have a 2011 f150. Battery died in 2020. Was the original battery. Must have been made on a Wednesday.

Yeah. Looks easy on paper. Till you put a.wrench on it. Battery not so bad. But other things are almost impossible to do without taking the vehicle apart.

Cool intro! They sure attach enough cables to that positive terminal. Looks like a job for Amsoil Metal Protector. Nice to see Ford using a strap to retain the battery. I never cared for the GM wedge type of hold down. I was always afraid the battery would do a "Peter Pan" and take off! 🤣🤣

Hey man thanks for the video ! I have a question I replaced my battery about a month ago . But no one told me about a rest after I replaced it, not even my local auto one where I picked up my battery. Just yesterday I got a check engine light. I Went and got a code reading for eco/pcm power relay too early... I took your advice and tried to key reset with the 5highbeem and 3 parking break , but I still get a check engine light , Did I fry my computer or fry the power relay ? Would I have to go to ford and have them computer reset ?

@HumearD that can be caused by a faulty relay for the pcm. It can also be caused by a faulty battery. You out the new one in (nobody told you, you have to reset), so it kept a memory of the old one. It may have fried that battery, not necessarily the module

Hi, good video.I've got a 2019 Ranger also that my auto start/stop not working as well and getting the vehicle charging message on start/stop monitor... Question for you is do you attach a memory saver when replacing your battery or just replace and unplug and plug BMS

Unplug the battery sensor. Replace your battery. Plug the sensor back in. Turn the key to the on position. Flash the high beams 5 times and then step on the brake 3 times. The battery light will flash after a few seconds indicating the bms has been reset. That's all you have to do.

Thanks, good video. I turn off the Start Stop every time I drive, if I left the Battery Monitor cable disconnected would it matter or show Battery icon etc? Also for those of us that don't have the FDRS thanks for the High Beams and Brakes method.

Your welcome. It only works on the ranger if you disconnect the battery sensor. It won't throw a light. On all other vehicles it will.

I didn't do it manually. I did it with FDRS. Just told you how to do it manually. But yes it works with the 2019 F150. Key on. Flash high beams 5 times. Step on brake 3 times. Watch battery light. After about 10 seconds it will flash indicating it is reset. Notice how my lights and stuff flickered when it reset? It only does that using the computer. It does not do that when you do it using the high beam method.

Any ideas as to what would cause my blind spot monitoring to stop working? I recently had to replace my battery and had a few issues come up afterwards. It runs fine, I had to reset the driver auto power window, it wouldn’t come up or down on its own anymore, but the blind spot monitor won’t work on either side anymore. The truck and sensors are all clean and it worked fine before replacing the battery. I’ve disconnected the battery again in the hopes it would reset itself but no luck. It simply shows an “off” light on the bottom of the dash screen. Hoping to get this figured out before having to take it in.

You have to reset the battery monitor system. Disconnecting and reconnecting doesnt do anything. It doesnt know it has a new battery. Key on engine off. Flash high beams 5 times. Step on brake 3 times. Battery light should flash after about 10 seconds indicating it has been reset. Turn ignition off. Then start vehicle. See if everything comes back online. Let me know.

I just disconnected the BMS in my Ranger 3.2 diesel 2023 because I needed an inverter and the charging system would go off after a while using it. I works pretty well without it the question is: How bad is it to run the car without the BMS?

It's not monitoring the battery. That's also how you get the auto start stop to be disabled. But if your battery has an issue or your alternator is failing then the BMS won't know because it's unplugged. So it's not super bad. But it's not super good because modules depend on a certain voltage to work correctly. And if it's not being monitored then bad things can happen

Hey, thanks for getting back to me. Big question we’ve got the battery in everything‘s all good it started, but the strap that straps over the battery fabric case is too short for the metal bracket at the end I believe it bolts down. Can we take that off altogether or and I mean the cover, or does it have to be on there?

The felt cover is to keep the temperature of the battery steady. You can take it out. But I will recommend to get a new one soon. It shouldn't be too short. Did you get the correct size battery?

@@BeardedFordTech hey thanks for getting back to me again… We took the battery that was in the truck to advanced auto and gave us a battery but obviously it is a little bit wider because the strap won’t go around it… Any tricks you can tell me what I can do to that cover wore the strap. Does that metal bracket at the end have to be grounded with the bolt or is that just a hold it instead of the fabric per se cover

@feliciaspivey1707 that is the battery hold down not the ground. I would go get one that isn't wider. If it's too wide it's incorrect.

Do you have to have a computer and log onto a website or something to download all the stuff for the battery or can you do it just from the truck itself

To reset the battery? You can do it without the computer. After battery install turn ignition on. Flash high beams 5 times. Step on brake 3 times. After about 10 seconds the battery light will flash indicating it's been reset. Or you can install the battery. Close the doors. Lock it and let it sit for 8 hours and not touch it at all. Don't even let the key near it to reset it

So we had the low beams replaced 2 weeks ago, and the guy couldn't reach the passenger side lamp so he removed the battery. Ever since then, the car has run fine EXCEPT about 5 x in the preceding weeks, following a short stop, ie: petrol stop or short pickup stop. When we go to restart the engine, it turns over but wont start? I have discovered if we disconnect the battery for a few mins, it will then start? It does start fine in the mornings and after longer stops? Should we complete this reset process since the battery has been disconnected? Cheers in advance..... edit: no they are just regular lamps, not LEDs

Shouldn't have to reset the bms if it was just disconnected. Only when replaced. Does it only do this after fueling? Is there a check engine light? You can try and do the reset to see if it clears the problem. He shouldn't have had to take out the battery though. There's room to get your hand in there

@dbmgreen have you had the battery checked? Battery light comes on when you turn the key to the on position. That's a self check. It shouldn't be on while driving. Did he plug the battery monitor sensor back in? Have you had the charging system checked?

Why would the car alarm go off? I'm not messing with a security function. Just a battery. Key is in ignition it knows I'm not breaking in.

@@BeardedFordTech Ahh I see now where I'm doing it wrong. I should have placed the key fob in the cup holder and push the start/stop button once before disconnecting the battery. Is that right sir? Sorry for my bad English.

I changed my battery and it wont continue to start. It crank but only for 1 send and dont continue. I tried to start and pushing the pedal then a check service light appeared. What do i need to do?? Need help

@MichaelLamsen-j6w pushing the throttle will keep it from starting thays called flood mode. If ypu installed the battery, make sure all your connections are correct. Something may be unplugged like the battery monitor sensor or anything over there. You can't just change out batteries like on older vehicles

This is ford factoey software FDRS and IDS. You can't get it unless you buy the computer and vehicle communication device with it which is about $4,000. You can get forscan on your co.puter and get a communication adapter. It's like $12 for a year. If you don't know what your doing on forscan please be careful. You will mess something up.
