Kristen, your new 170 custom by OSV is gorgeous. I love that you learned from your last van and re-engineered what is more useable. The permanent bed w/ garage is a game changer, PLUS the spare bed for guests or Charlie : ) Love that you have implemented lighter more durable material that still looks natural. I'm sure this van is way better suited for you, it's absolutely stunning and I know you were more confident with this builder than the last van. Lessons learned! John Mcneal thanks John! I’m loving the van
@johnmcneal94776 жыл бұрын
I am about 95% done with our sprinter 170 4x4 van build out and our lay out is VERY similar to yours. We have owned several RV's over the years and we found that the permanent bed with storage under is the way to go on this van. We both realize getting a great nights sleep every night is the key to travel for us and our 10 inches of foam in a queen sized bed is amazing. On those nights that it might be raining? I sleep like a baby. If we fill all of the storage space we have now, we are taking to much stuff so storage space is not an issue as it looks like you discovered. I installed windows all around as we don't want to feel like we live in a box. We have so much natural light we never need to turn on the lights during the day and we have 360 degree views if we choose. With the dark tinted windows no one can see in anyways. And if we want, we can put up a few or all of the black out shade in a couple of minutes for privacy or sun blocking. Every RV we have owned with tiny showers, well, they just turn into junk or storage anyway so no indoor shower. But, we do have a portable indoor toilet/bench that works really well and no one realizes it is even there until we show them. I really like your cat walk between the solar panels, I wish we had done something like that. We have 580 watts of panels on the roof which pretty much takes up the entire space. But the trade off is, our battery bank is usually fully charged by noon if we are parked. I installed a Stirling DC/DC charger and so far I am super impressed with the ease of install and how well it works while driving. (www.amazon.com/Sterling-BB1230-12-Volt-30-Amps/dp/B071DMV7PF) So I can see why you love your van, cause we love our van also.

A permanent bed AND a living room AND a dining room AND and office AND a kitchen. I love it! Even though I loved the little bathroom in your old van, I do see all the benefits of this one. You still get your own shower, and actually, now you have more room to shower in! I've never seen that thing that scrolls up and down to be a room divider/insulator/blackout curtain before. That is next level!

The added juice you have is incredible, no more worries! Love the OV insulated soft walls, genius. I’ve been looking at van conversions for years, have been saving up to start my own tiny journey of sorts and have been back and forth over a van or tiny house the entire time. The tiny house won over and over again, as no van ever felt like it had enough room for me to living in. In Europe we have weight issues with what we can drive without taking a spacial license. I was actually considering £1000 to take that license so I could build in a bigger van, as I wanted something more portable than a tiny house, but “bigger” than a van... But... I have to say, this van might have won me over. It’s the first van I’ve seen where I really thought, that’s enough room for me too live in. Without doubt, this is the best sprinter conversion on line... yep... I honestly don’t think there’s many I haven’t seen, and this is by far the best one I’ve seen. You really might have sold me on the van idea instead.

Bearfoot Theory - I'm curious about your flooring and cushion covers. Easy to clean? And do you use curtains?
@bearfoottheory6 жыл бұрын
The cushions are made of sunbrella. So they are fade and stain resistant. The floor has some texture in it. We are still figuring out the best tool to clean it with. A mop with a little water/vinegar seems to do the trick. Like my old van I'm learning though, that any floor in a van is hard to keep clean especially when you have a dog. I'd like to instate a "no shoes in the van" rule, but I don't think that's practical. The curtains we use all the time. We actually have them over the windows a majority of the time because they do such a good job insulating the van.

Kristin how do feel about going from 144 to 170 wheel base? Do you miss the 144 or nah? Your thoughtful explanation of why you went with the “bed over garage” layout is super helpful! Specifically how much you learned and applied from living in the previous layout, thanks for the practical advice and sharing your thought process. Outside van was a huge source of inspiration when I built my sprinter. You’ve given me serious van envy!

Great presentation of a thoroughly thought out van conversion. I am a senior and like the folding recumbent trikes like the Greenspeed Magnum XL trike and the AZUB Ti-Fly trike. Also the Catrike Dumont and the HP Velotechnik Scorpion.

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
@livinglifewithaaron71186 жыл бұрын
Patriot Jefferson I'm not far off. The build is about 15-20k. Windows are about 500 per window, swivel seats are about 500 per seat. Solar, inverter, lithium batteries etc maybe 8k. Heater 2k, roof rack 2k. A few more random things..its definitely not 100k..

What a great plan. Swivel front seats are a must. Love the zippered front curtains. Wonder if they sell them by themselves for my Chevy van.

The zippered front curtain is super useful. We pretty much never take it down. Outside Van doesn't sell them, but I bet with enough creativity you could make one yourself.

Ouch. That's more than I paid for my house. Hey, if you got the money to burn then I say go for it. Personally, I would always be worried every time I went somewhere in something that expensive.

You have chosen well. Yes it's allot of clam shells and many of us can't to that. Idid buy a 144 and was hoping to do what you've done but I fear the cost is . But if you have it and you know what you want, Your on top of the world. It's a great build! Mac out
@kenhoward35126 жыл бұрын
101perspective: For perspective, in the U.S., these days, the average new house easily costs between $300k and $500k (in those places people generally desire moving to, rather than away from). After watching this video, I was thinking it wouldn't be surprising if this van + high-quality build was $150k.
@101perspective6 жыл бұрын
Ken Howard That isn't really a good comparison. You almost certainly would never be allowed to park something like this anywhere near where those more expensive houses in the highly toured areas are. No, you are going to end up parking closer to the $150k and below homes in most cases. And you can bet that a $150k van in those locations is going to stick out like a sore thumb. You will be a prime target for thieves and vandals. Heck, you could even be a prime target for cops looking to hand out some tickets. Now, you can stay at paid sites with something like this. However, that means limiting where you can stay... it also increases your costs significantly. On top of that, there are many roads out there that you might be willing to take a van this size on, but you would have to be crazy to take one on it that costs $150k. So, now you are limiting yourself in that respect also. All of that said, if you have the money to burn, then most of what I just pointed out isn't going to matter much to you.
