The piano department at the Conservatoire of Music in San Francisco taught the same thing. The keys never move. You must see them in your mind and shut everything else out. My roommate, as his encore from his piano recital, played the theme tune from the Hulk, back in the early 80's. The one with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. It brought the house down. Just though I'd throw you a bone or two. LOL :-)

I went to a rock festival last summer mostly to hear Nightwish, but Beast in Black was the band that got stuck in my head after. Didn't really know about them before that festival, but I've been paying close attention since. Blind and Frozen also became my most played song on spotify last year! Going to see them again in october this year. Gotta see how their 2nd album is live too! :D

Rich is doing it right. The brain can process more visual information then any other sense. It's true I've can use a little of that by closing the eyes, or losing them. However the impact is minimal for the brain, you can perfectly fine watch and listen. Doesn't mean the visuals can't be distracting but don't both is how your brain is supposed to work. Most of our threats needed visual identification, hence we got colour vision.

My only note to the band would be for the lead guitarist: Remember, you don't necessarily have to cram as many notes as possible into your solo - let relatively few notes ring out with heart and soul behind them. Glad you brought up the keyboards because me and a friend have always felt it was a shame they don't even have a dedicated keyboardist for live shows. For a band that has such a keyboard heavy sound it is a real shame they choose the backing track route for their keyboards when playing live. I guess it could just be as simple as they just don't have the $$$ to hire someone?

If you guys like the layering on this song you should react to Oceandeep by Beast In Black it's such an EPIC 80's ballad but the coolest part for me is how the song starts out with literally just a flute, acoustic guitar and vocals and it slowly adds new instruments as the song progresses almost like they are lighting up an orchestra one at a time and each time the new instrument joins it adds to the exponentially swelling overall music. In the moment before each instrument comes in you are thinking "this is EVERYTHING this song needs" and the immediate moment after you are thinking "THAT is what this song was missing" then rinse and repeat. Just a brilliant piece IMHO. I have ZERO musical talent myself but I'm drawn to music where it is clear that effort, care and technical proficiency played a major part in shaping their music (Big reason I've been a Fan of Dream Theater since even before they Added LaBrie their music is amazing) I don't want repetitive commercial songs I want craftsmanship

Kel's blind analogy is very similar to no look typing. In my case, I learned how to type in HS in the late 80s, and then in the late 90s I had a bad auto accident where I suffered a spinal injury which impaired my hands. Once I recovered enough to use a PC again, my typing technique changed. It was a single finger hunting and pecking method, BUT because I had keyboard skills, I could type without looking. At least for the most part. I made a lot of mistakes, but I made it work.

I have the same complaints about the lack of a keyboard player. I've seen them live many many times already(I live in Finland) but the keyboard parts are all playback, which is really lame. Otherwise 5/5 band. Battle Beast (which is the former band of the guitarist Anton Kabanen) have a keyboard player and he is awesome :)
