A lot of groups showed visible disdain for being forced to lip sync back in these days and before. A lot of the rock groups would purposely be playing the wrong chords on their guitar to signal to other players that it was a farce. Gary Numan hit a spin at the mic on Top of the Pops but didn't make it back around to the mic before the lyrics kicked back in (at the same time laughing about it) all while his keyboard player was staring hollowly into the camera, never looking down at his keyboard and the 2 keys he was pressing over and over.

Rick Rubin adjusted their style by steering them into a more hiphop sound from their original ska-punk style. When they branched out after DefJam you would see it coming back. I even like the subpop-esque sound they would take after they moved east. "Instant Death", "Picture This" and my alltime favorite chill and cruise track from any artist. "I Don't Know".
