AD Rock is rocking a Hondo "Fame" series guitar here. Hondos were everywhere in the 70s-80s. They were inexpensive knockoffs of other popular guitars like strats. They were inexpensive and usually made with cheap components. But people are fond of them now due to nostalgia and the fact that they made some decent guitars as well as some clunkers. But its extremely rare to see one being used in a professional setting by a big name act. They definitely were not considered to be on par with Fender or Gibson. But that tells me that AD Rock knew what he liked, and he must have liked the way it played regardless of their mediocre reputation. My first guitar was a Hondo and I loved it. I wish i had it back as they're getting harder to find.

were they expensive?
@kevinr.3542
@kevinr.3542 5 ай бұрын
@@OGRE_HATES_NERDS nope, in the 80s they were the cheapest guitars you could get. i got mine for $70. BUT they were surprisingly well made (sometimes) if you got lucky. most of them were trashed so theyre kind of rare now and people are willing to pay $300-400 for that same $70 guitar.

He played Hondos almost exclusively through his whole career. I think his mom and some of here friends chipped in to get him his first guitar and that was the price point they were able to afford. If you look at almost any gig he's always reppin the Hondo. My first guitar was a Hondo Les Paul knock off. Wasn't great but it did the job. Wish I still had it.

@@anthonyv6962 no way. that is incredible. i love youtube for this reason. i was so curious how he ended up playing a Hondo, my favorite defunct 'low end' beginner guitar company. i wanted to think he had a cool reason or was loyal for a reason. Beastie Boys just seemed like solid dudes, gotta love their music. this makes me appreciate them more and i love the inside info!

Oh dude this is just the tip of the iceberg. You should check out their instrumental album called The Mix Up. They’re as much of a band as they are a rap group. And something else to check out is The In-Sound From Way Out…which is a collection of instrumentals from their 90’s albums. Perfect compliment to The Mix-Up.
