Masterpiece. Beastie boys was one of the greatest live shows EVER, no contest. the rapid shift in musical styles led to incredible situations, like break dance battles suddenly transformed into mosh pits, it was wild! everyone was feeling it, not a cell phone in sight! man i miss the 90s

Frankly it's amazing this album was a bomb on release. I'm glad it's recognized now. I was born in 85 and grew up listening to the Beastie Boys and was a fan since I first heard their songs on the radio and MTV. I always had a BB CD with my Walkman to play while walking to school.

By far, pound for pound, one of their deepest contributions to hip hop - lyrical content, the spiritusl connection, the funky ass beat - this song was very overlooked, very underrated and just let you know how deep these fellas could get and that their love for hip hop was for real and not some fly by night pop gimmack for the suburban preppies and yuppies of their generation!!!!!! I remember buying the multicolored cassette version with the lyrics in the tiniest type I'd ever seen and playing it every goddamn day the entire summer. A literal work of art.. can’t believe each frame was hand painted. Not only that but the lyrics are as great as any physical art. For beings so electric, it’s still amazing to think there are roots of rock n roll and for being HipHop derived as well. But I know that’s evident from all Beastie Boys tracks, yet still gets me because it’s the perfect example of diversity in music. After all, it was there calling card it made and gave that unique array. Although the classic takeaways are great, what’s even greater and instantly more noticeable than the classic style is the entirely original and unique visuals which truly depict this psycho sphere of rhythms so crystal. The video is something to ponder and utterly praise. You can really appreciate there style and the picture there painting because it is supported by the paintings so nicely. I also got to restate a compliment to the adidas line as it makes and is a testament to all sneaker lyrics so commendable but I also have take title to appreciate the art. It’s a duality that they give you, it’s expected from influencers of the golden age of hiphop yet it’s still surprising and amazing. It leaves you in awe.

Probably the most deeply layered group of samples you will ever find. The Dust Brothers Are legendary for their genius at the turntable and ability to find the right grooves to make a whole much greater than the sum of its parts. This was the last album on which the Beastie Boys didn't play their own instruments. Which in many ways would change their sound and also keep pushing forward into new places that hip-hop hadn't necessarily been before. I was lucky enough to see them on this tour at a venue that held around 400 people it was absolutely amazing.. I saw them with Madonna in 87. It was entertaining but they only had one album to play from. At the time the tickets were $25 and I couldn't believe I was paying that for a concert. I can't even imagine what a Madonna ticket would cost today Lol.

animation nerd correcting you: it was actually famed independent animator Chris Casady who did the painting animations. Adam Yauch was the assistant painter and helped transfer the paintings to film.

@@StarrieWilliamson welcome. one more correction: there were actually six-seven artists who made Shadrach, but Casady was the main animator of the pencil drawings that were then painted in. the main directors were Yauch along with Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who directed videos for Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers. i'm working on reconstructing the International Tournee of Animation theatrical series of anthology films and Shadrach was featured in the 1990 run, so I know a lot about the video.
