teaming up in FFA is the worst thing one can do and it's hated by everyone. Imagine you joined a FFA, and they all play against you, and you lose. Is this the FFA experience you are looking for?

Hated by everyone? Speak for yourself. Diplomacy in FFA is the best thing ever. I played more than 50 FFA games and given my experience i can tell you that you can always appeal to someone's reason and explain him why he's supposed to be your friend or ally or why it is more reasonable to have a truce yet. Use your keyboard not only for hot keys, but also for wise messages which can win you a game.
