For a bit "cleaner look" I would either dunk all the bolts to rust remover solution before reinstalling or changing everything to 316/A2 marine steel ones. It's the little details that sometimes are the most crucial.

What do you think regarding bolts like the ones used on disc brakes? I also have an older bike I currently restored and I reused the old bolts since I didn't knew the grade of these bolts. It's less important on a bottle cage but the brakes are a different story where I don't wanted to do experiments
@OjStudios

@@simonm1447 Well new brake rotor bolts can be had for pennies. They do get a lot of heat circulation so I wouldn't install "whatever" on them. Stem, bottle cage, brake levers don't get the same stresses. Just a quality stainless bolt is fine.

@oldshovel
@oldshovel Жыл бұрын
It’s a good question. The reason for the change was to work with the 10 speed bar end shifters. The Deore derailleur was made for 9speed mountain shifters. Also Shimano 10 speed road shifters have a different pull ratio than their 10 speed mountain so to make things work correctly I needed a 10 speed long cage Shimano road derailleur, this the one I installed.
@elliott959
@elliott959 Жыл бұрын
@@oldshovel The Shimano 9 cable pull is almost nearly the same as the road 10 so that combination could have probably worked close enough, but you don't seem to be the kind of person who would tolerate "close enough" on one of your builds. Nice work!

@@oldshovel No. Please re-research this! The Shimano road 7-10 speed (excluding Dura-Ace 8sp, and new Tiagra 4700 10sp) have the *exact* same cable pull ratio (what matters here) as all MTB 7-9 speed. In fact a 9-speed MTB RD is what is used with 105 and Ultegra 10-speed shifters on touring bikes. The original Deore RD would have worked fine.

I'd *love* to see you get the Ultegra RD-6600-SG to work with a 42T cog. He was wrong - this RD is designed for 28T max. The original MTB rear deore derailleur would have worked fine with these bar end shifters. Shimano used the same cable pull back when all those parts were made. The front bar-end shifter is friction, so the original MTB front derailler would also have worked fine - as shown by using an even older MTB front derailleur.

I like that frame. Nice work, Oldshovel. I personally would have flipped the stem upside down and shortened the steerer tube to a maximum of 1 or 2 spacers underneath the stem. The Drop bars are much too high to fulifill their purpose of drop bars. Anyways... Great work as usual! I love the little easteregg of putting the SRAM chain on a full Shimano drivetrain. Every mechanic would advise you not to do so, but here is the proof: If it is a chain, it will work! ;) EDIT: I have seen the other comments and why you have left the steerer tube and stem as it was. Great build but I also don't care for the spacer sich. I think it would make it much more appealing for a buyer to have half as many. If they wanted a higher stem they could add and extension. @@lastfm4477 Generally with you on this but having converted a few old mtb to drops, having road bikes and newer gravel bikes...this one is a bit much. If you need these bars this high on a bike this small you're either on the wrong size frame or this style doesn't suit your physiology. You could safely take out that non-matching carbon spacer, still leave one on top, and have the adjustability you need without the unnecessary cramping of the cockpit and additional torque on the headset. In this case there were a few factors, the first was the parts that were available for the Salt Lake Bicycle collective and what parts I could donate from my parts bin. I guess we could have purchased new brifters but to find ones that worked with long pull disk brakes. What it came to was the collective had bar end shifters and I had the cane creek v levers and together we had what it took. Second is a matter of preference, I quite like the simplicity of bar end shifters especially for a touring type setup.

It would have been better to just install less spacers and maybe some "Alt" bars with a bit of rise.

@@cjohnson3836 Thanks Karen! I wasn't bitching, I was commenting. And that is being productive to help monetize the video for the KZbin creator.

From a safety & ergonomics perspective, I would not have fitted drop bars. I sincerely hope this bike does not end up in the hands of a young, inexperienced cyclist.

Shovel! Help! I need a recommendation for carbon bmx/riser handlebars for my 1998 stumpie! I'm pretty new to this bike(less than 100 miles), and the geometry has me too slumped over. I need 1" bars. Currently have flat carbon mtb bars. Need a more upright position for my dad bike/commuter. Btw, just donated two bikes, and all of my XT parts to the collective. Thank you for making me aware of them and their mission. Thank you --your fan from Wyoming!
