Hey Derek Brown, I've listened to all your songs on your fifty-fifty album, and looked at your tutorial videos. I truly find those techniques golden. Can I ask where you got your inspiration for your music and how you discovered these techniques? Furthermore, I'm learning how to slap tong right now, but I'm still not really getting the hang of it. Do you think i should get a thinner reed or something that might contribute to the development of my slap tonging?
@chrisr42774 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately i'm not derek, but in regards to the slap tonguing it might help use a wider reed - not that it won't work on smaller reeds, i personally learnt how to do it when i only owned an alto, but trying to learn it on clarinet might be a stretch. You wanna imagine your tongue more like a plunger pulling down on the reed. It's no use trying to pull down before you feel suction first and definitely no point blowing any air until you know you at least have the suction down. Slap tonguing can be done on just a mouthpiece, and i've shocked a few people by just doing it on a reed - whilst it barely makes a sound you can kinda hear it still and its good for practicing the motion when you're away from home or something.
@brian.sax_3 жыл бұрын
Yes, thinner reeds help to make it more violent and easier to do abruptly

Hi Derek. I relly dig your videos and playing. I love the interesting places, too. I've watched all your tutorials but I cannot do any of the effects you show there :-( I think I am too old for such stuff - or maybe these effects are harder to produce on alto? Anyway, thank you for the good stuff and I'm looking forward to the next video.
@beatboxsax9 жыл бұрын
+Ulrich Höbler Thanks for the note! And don't give up on the techniques!!! You're never too old, and everything should still work on alto. That being said, some of the techniques (especially the coolest ones like slap tonguing, tongue ramming, and double tonguing) are just REALLY hard for anyone to learn. Just try a little bit each day, and you'll eventually get there. Good luck!

It may be harder on an alto. I've always been told it's easier to express on tenor, and since I've started playing both, i can kinda see it. More air can be pushed through?
