BeatBuddy VS SDRUM - HOW TO CHOOSE?

BeatBuddy VS SDRUM is a question I get asked a lot. It might be due to all of the SDRUM videos I've done over the last several months. The BeatBuddy is relatively new to us here at The Pedal Guy, but in the short-ish time that it's been in the studio, it's quickly become a constant source of drum grooves and easy to get going song ideas.
In this video, I'm going to cover the specific differences between these two pedals. What makes them different, what makes them similar, and how to make the most informed choice between them.

For those who care, the BeatBuddy is much better than the SDRUM. The Beatbuddy is prerecorded human played drum tracks, as opposed to being a synthetic rhythm machine. I have many rhythm machines. They are hard to program, while I was using the BeatBuddy within minutes. The BeatBuddy is so easy to use, you'll quickly tap into all its features. The SDRUM has a learning curve and many will find it hard to maximize use in the real world. The fact that you can control the entire BeatBuddy and all its menus through your feet is just ingenious.

I’m in the market for one of these, but while I’m all about the human drum thing, what I need is to play completely experimental, on the fly solo drone music.. seemed like the sdrums suited that type of thing 🧐

@@itsonlyrocknroll12 i’ve had my beat buddy for a couple years and I still dig it with just the supplied beats, but I would definitely like more. They have added some more features like half time etc. there’s also the ability to just buy groups of beats for $20 I think instead of jumping into the two or more hundred dollar packages. I’m pretty computer illiterate so I’m a little reticent to pay for them and then find out that I don’t know how to get them to play but it’s nice to know if I apply myself a little bit I could probably get it to go. The sound of the beat buddy is really nice, as they are clear samples and they lend themselves well to a little post distortion, and other effects. Of course you have to apply to the whole kit, or separated by right and left, but it’s no Linn Drum with separate outs for everything so you could just flange a little cymbal. Maybe they have a $20 set of add-ons that would help? I also make parts a little more interesting by layering different kits or styles and mixing up genres and time even, by half, double or subdivisions.

@SteveFisher - You're right!! BTW, Does anyone know by chance whether you can mute part of drum set (i.e. when you play live - muting the kick and snare and leaving just the HH play for a bridge and then bring back the muted drums)? I use the BB with a Midi controller pedal and it works really great, but didn't figure out yet how to control part of a playing set. If someone experienced something like that, I'd appreciate the sharing. Thanks!!

both are cool pedals and both are something i've been looking for as a guitar player to use as a drum section when i'm jamming in my room. i chose the sdrum though because i don't want to use a daw every time i want to create a beat for my current riffs/solo/whatever and also i don't want to be limited by precreated and preloaded patterns which can't be tweaked using the pedal. i've watched all of your sdrum videos and was amazed by how versatile the pedal was (it has [almost] every single thing i was expecting from it) and i must say - you've done great job showing all its features and possibilities, which i wouldn't have discovered watching other youtube reviews and demos :)

I’m about 2 1/2 minutes in and it seems to be pretty informative. I’ve had my beat buddy for maybe coming up on two years and wasn’t aware that I could program my own beats I thought I had to buy them all. It’s probably over my head, I mean I’m afraid to even buy some extra beats because I don’t think I’ll know how to add them, but nice to know that if I learned how that it is there. Seems to be a big market of people like That didn’t grow up with computers but have them, and only scratch the surface.

with the beatbuddy you can create or "convert" any beat file into a midi file and use it. This requires some knowledge of drumming or writing drums on computer software. I have the beatbuddy and can't do difficult patterns, but I make some basic patterns or edit from other places. As pedal guy says, singular sound also sells some libraries which are really good and more or less cheap. What I do is I get someone who knows how to write drums on software and pay 5 bucks per song the way I want them (verse-chorus-verse, etc) And I've got plenty of songs in these ways. Most popular songs are on the library. And for jazz or latin you could probably use the default rhythms

The video is definitely informative and helpful, as are all your videos. I do have a very specific question though. My ears perked up when you said that the Beat Buddy could be synched with the "Aeros." I assume you mean the Aeros Loop Studio, which I have. However, I recently purchased a SDRUM and I would like to know if the SDRUM will sync with the Aeros Loop Studio if you have the special Jamsync to MIDI cable you speak of. I figured if anyone would know, it would be you. If it can sync up, that's somewhat of a game changer because the Aeros allows for different parts such as verse, chorus, bridge, etc and so does the SDRUM. Thanks in advance.

I have not had any pedal so far. I am considering to buy a pedal. What I need: for live performance with acoustic guitar. I have some 20-25 songs in my repertoire, mostly pop, latin. Yes, with the right adapters it should work. The SDRUM requires a JamSync to MIDI adapter and the BeatBuddy requires a MIDI adapter cable that's sold by Singular Sound.

I'm still trying to figure out why one would put their guitar into the beat buddy if they want to send just their guitar signal to their amp anyway? Why not just bypass the pedal input, you don't need it to use it right? Just the output? I think if I was using it to jam alone with or whatever, I would just have it plugged into the PA via the direct out. Keep my guitar separate, and jam. Kinda cool when writing just to have a beat behind you, or for a dry recording/scratch track. I always use a scratch track when I start. That gives me a baseline to build from.

The TRIO is a bit different as it’s a drum, bass, and looper pedal so it’s really in a class by itself.

Actually you can load your own samples on the bb. It's a midi sampler: you can even put melodic samples in there and play it with a keyboard if you want. The number of kits comparison makes no sense, except out of the box. But it's a pedal that gives its best when you program it the way you want: when used with its software it offers a lot more. The sdrum is more for someone who don't care so much to create his beats in details and just want to play.

You mean if I have a digital piano like a Roland RPthree or (i’m not exactly sure of the model as it’s in the garage in a road case) but it’s a decent weighted key Model with MIDI in and outs, as faras I know of, and if so equipped I could program my own beats from the piano without having to do the DAW thing?

@@LTJR. Nope. You can play it live, you can't store your beat directly inside the BB (software needed). BUT if you use an external seq (like a beatstep) or your keyboard has its own seq, then you can basically do what you say as long as the BB remains connected to it.

I played all my life and basically had a decent existence during my gigging years but only the last maybe five years or so... basically whenever loopers started to come out, have I started to record myself. I’m so old that I was one of the first people to ever buy the rack model original jam man, that you could open up and fill spaces with more memory, Long before a little SD cards. Besides ECHO and Delay, a hip and unheard of feature (at that time) was being able to play backwards which tripped people out when we would do Hendrix type stuff. It was sort of ahead of its time, as people wouldn’t understand how a trio could sound like another guitar player was playing rhythm behind my solos, which could lead people to think it was all pre-recorded. The Milli Vanilli effect I guess I ultimately sold it but I would’ve loved to keep it just for nostalgia. Put it next to a big plastic rotary home phone!

Hello.. Does SDRUM have a footswitch fuction enables 'fill in / outro'? I am thinking of playing a guitar with SDRUM or BeatBuddy to lead a small group worship. I like to have very basic and simple drum beat (for this I lean toward SDRUM) but also like to have fill-in and outro fuction to end the song properly (for this I lean toward BeatBuddy Mini 2) Can you help guiding me out of this dilema? Thanks for the question. No, the SDRUM doesn't quite get the job done. The BeatBuddy would be a better solution as it will give you a dedicated intro and outro. The BeatBuddy Mini will also do this too if price is a factor.

I've tried this with both the RC500 and the RC5 and sadly it doesn't work 100% of the time. I'd say stick with the JamMan Solo XT because it's waaay more reliable. The RC5 will have garbled glitchy sounding playback. It ALWAYS tries to keep in sync with the midi clock of the SDRUM and due to the minor fluctuations all midi clock messages have, the RC5 will constantly slow down and speed up the playback ever so slightly. This makes it sound like you recorded your loop underwater. The RC500 has a feature called "Tempo Sync" which can be turned off to fix the glitchy sounding playback issue, but then this creates the new issue of your loops randomly failing to playback between cycles. It's impossible to know exactly when the playback will drop out but it almost always does eventually. I've so got some loops that will playback perfectly for what seems like an eternity, and others (usually longer ones) that always fail after the very first cycle.

From what I gather, this is an issue with the Boss pedals. Even when I took the SDRUM out of the equation and just midi-synced the RC500 to the RC5 (and vice versa) I still got the same exact issues! Just a little less frequently. They just don't seem to like being midi slaves to other devices. I've heard of other people having the same issues when midi slaving them for use with DAWs too. Hope this helps.

Sorry to spam but one more important thing. RC5s and 500s will ALWAYS start playback whenever the SDRUM starts playback. They don't have the same "arming" feature the Solo XTs have that lets you choose if you want to start the SDRUM first and then bring the loops in after or if you want them to all start together. EDIT*** There is a workaround for this. If you want to start the midi clock master device first and bring the loops in later: 1. In your RC looper's MIDI menu, set the SYNC START option to RHYTHM instead of ALL. 2.Turn down the Rhythm's level to 0 3. Start on your midi clock master device and the RC's loop won't start but the Rhythm will play back silently. 4. Start the loop on the RC whenever you want and it will begin perfectly in time with your midi clock master device.

Looking for your opinion. Which product do you think would work better for a live worship set when we don't have a drummer. Typically 3-5 songs with each having verses, chorus and bridge sections. Sometime there are time breaks between songs and sometimes one song transitions into another. Looking for the the ability to have different patterns for each song section (V,C & B), different patterns between songs and making these changes in the easiest(quickest) way possible since I would be playing guitar. Thanks for the question. Both of these would be fine solutions. However the deciding factor would be whether or not you need to create beats on the fly or work with pre-programmed beats. If you were going to work with pre-programmed beats the BeatBuddy would be the best. If it’s the other way around then the strum would be the better solution. Hope that helps. We have the BeatBuddy in stock now if that’s the one you want. We’ll have the SDRUM in stock probably later this month or March.

@@ThePedalGuy - First, thanks for the quick response. I guess I should have been more specific. First, I believe both pedal allow me to save songs ahead of time. So, I could save the 5 songs I need for a set in order. Then when on the stage I would need to recall a song, play it with the ability to switch between parts (V,C & B) and then stop , recall the next song and play it and so on. Specifically, assuming I bought the accompanying switch, could I do this entirely with my feet without having to bend over and push any buttons with my hand? I've watched your videos, watched other videos, read the manuals and can't seem to determine this . The biggest question is how to switch from saved song to song with your feet.

@@toddmiller7298 Ah ok. Then in that case, the BeatBuddy with the additional footswitch will get this done. Just keep in mind that you need to stop the song first, then you can switch to the next song. The SDRUM does not do this. Hope that helps.

I emailed the guy selling these in Germany because I wanted to know if it worked with the RC505......here is what he said and I did what he said and it did work for me....."Thanks for your email! Yes, with this cable, you can sync your RC-505 to your SDRUM. The SDRUM has a midi output only, so it acts as the master clock and the RC-505 has to be the slave. As some people mentioned, the RC-505 (and other Roland loopers) prefer to be the master. But if you turn off the tempo sync of the RC-505 (which disengages the timestreching which can cause some glitches in audio when slaved to an external midi clock) the looper is still synced to the midi clock and plays without glitches. This is a workaround for a bug of the RC-505 which happens with any midi device as master clock and any midi cable. But with tempo sync turned off, it should work fine."

Hi Josh. Thanks for the feedback. That's kind of the point though. You set the tempo in your head or via your playing. You teach that tempo and part to the SDRUM and off you go. If you want to change the tempo after the fact, just use the Tempo knob. Again, that's what I mean by calling it a beat creator.

@@ThePedalGuy Yea I understand that, I actually have an SDRUM (sold the BeatBuddy to get it). But when I used the BeatBuddy, it was great to be able to actually set the tempo - I always made sure it was a multiple of 5, that way I could easily match the temp again like if I recorded it to the PC etc. It's impossible to find the same tempo again with the SDRUM

@@jobbo89 I got one of those little Behringer three channel mixer’s for five bucks from somebody used and it had a BPM counter, I think for DJ work. A little mixer is great for looping anyway so it was just a plus.
