All we wanted was an N64 version of the Pokémon Game Boy games, and Nintendo came up with so many Pokémon games that were anything but that.

They probably didn't see the need. Turning a 2D game into 3D is no small task (expensive) and making the main games on GB helped keep their virtual monopoly in the handheld market.

@@encycl07pedia- Perhaps, but they made the jump with Mario, Zelda and all their other big IPs. And, for me at least, it wouldn't have had to have even been a 3D game, just a higher resolution iteration of the Game Boy games. The gaming magazines would have roasted them for that though.

@@RJKYEG Eh, I think it's different for those as they were primarily TV games anyway. Pokemon was first and foremost a GB series. The GB Tower in the Stadium series basically does what you describe bringing Pokemon main series games to the TV... or the Super Game Boy.

I remember LOVING this game as a kid. I remember the reason why I loved it was because of the soundtrack, the calming atmosphere of locations, the early 3D graphics, and the first ever time I could ever “talk” to things in a game when I was like 6 or 7

I remember this game. It's not that bad to control once you get the hang of it: You have to speak calmly and clearly, using the phrases it knows and nothing else extra in the bubble. "Over here... Carrot... OK" works. "Get the carrot! No don't friggin zap it, now it's junk! There's another carrot over there! That's a dirt ball you moron! OMFG DON'T SEND THAT YOU RUINED THE STEW!" does not. And once it's started some other action, it often can't be interrupted until that action finishes. It's really more the sort of game that's fun to mess around in rather than try to 100% in any time period. Which makes sense, it's a virtual pet. One time Pikachu started flinging tissues all over the floor. After I got it to stop, I told it to clean up and it went around zapping the tissues to burn them up. As far as I know this accomplished nothing in terms of game progression, but it was a fun and memorable interaction.

As someone who beat this game when it was new… I actually liked it! Calming music and scenery, the big issue was how junk the mic included was! If you used any other 2.5mm mic, it worked WAY better. If you get a chance, plug the Hey You Pikachu mic into a computer and record some audio and listen to have terrible it is. Just like pokemon snap, this concept should be revisited since the tech is so much better… imagine something like this but as an app!

No, I disagree totally. My experience when it was new was just like his, to the point as a kid I was so frustrated I was yelling on the mic. I felt bad my parents spent $99.99 dollars on it tho too, so I also said I liked it when I really didn't.

Some of the mic quality might depend on how well the mic was stored. The cabling didn’t seem particularly sturdy, so it’s possible it was better when it first came out.

Look up any videos of people using it, it was a trash mic even in perfect condition. Check out the forum ‘ I hooked up a $400 mic to Hey You! Pikachu and I swear the game works better’ the first post has audio recorded from it and it’s unbelievable had bad it is. The game never had a chance with it being attached to this junk mic

This game reminds me so much of parenting a toddler. Always repeating yourself. Them never listening and trying to play tag instead. Not being able to find something that is literally right next to them 5:11. Sending them into the woods to fend for themselves when you’ve had enough.

Id be so happy if they sold a usb C microphone for the nso n64 controller and gave us hey you Pikachu. This game was my whole childhood and i played it so much. When Pikachu would run away id force him to take care of caterpies as punishment and make him watch tv, i would tell Pikachu we couldn't go outside til he learned not to run away (after a few mins your room is a mess) 😭 Sometimes i wonder if im the only one that loved the game and still do...

I remember the playground legends for this game. The biggest one being if you do every mission successfully in one try that at the end mew shows up and you can play the whole game over with mew instead of pikachu. Good times.

As a Pokémon fan who played this as a kid (though several years after it came out), I've spent decades of my life thinking this was a sandbox/life sim game, or even more of a toy, because back then I never realized it had actual missions. I simply didn't make it that far before giving up and then proceeding to lose the microphone. This was enlightening (slightly).

I never finished it, but I did do missions and unlocked some additional ones. It's very much more of an early life sim than a game in the traditional sense. It's from around when tamagachis were big, so it's kind of that but on a TV, plus missions to do and treasures to collect. BTW the mic and the box that connects it to the N64 are separate. The mic is just a standard 3.5mm monaural mic, and any regular PC mic will work. The box is special though, apparently it's responsible for the voice recognition and tells the N64 what words were said.

We bought this game and it's the reason why I stopped buying Nintendo peripherals. I had so much faith in it as a kid though, imagining all kinds of cool applications for it that didn't even matter because the N64 was on its way out.

Your main problem was not raising your voice pitch, the VRU was designed for kids. For anyone interested in trying this game themselves, which I personally recommend, the Simple64 emulator has the VRU emulated.

This game isn't great, but I love it so much. I remember my parents arguing about whether or not to buy it for me bc it was more expensive bc of the vru being included. My mom was worried I wouldn't play it enough, but by god I played the heck out of it. It was the first video game I ever beat and I cried when I reached the credits.

I remember my experience way back when being exactly the same. It was $99.99 too at the time it came out because of the voice hardware, I was so excited to get it. It was garbage. Within the next few weeks the price dropped tremendously. If there is a time Nintendo failed the kids, it was this. ;( I felt bad my parents spent so much money on this too. The most fun me and my brother had with it was cussing at pikachu because that made it funnier, and we werent supposed to as kids.

Really? Emotional damage? It's the common trope of learning to let someone go. It's supposed to be a moment of emotional growth and maturity, which happens through facing hard truths. Hell, even Disney's Jungle Book does the same thing. I think the problem is just the mental disconnect with established Pokémon "lore", since keeping your own Pokémon is just standard practice in the game world, so why this particular one needs to be released into the wild simply doesn't make sense.

This was the first game I got for my N64 and I didn't even know how to speak english at that time. I played that for 600+ in game days and I still have things to do. I feel sorry for anyone who will try to do 100%. Btw the voice recognition is bad in english version, japanese is better.
