Me too. I discovered this story as they talked about it 2 hours ago at the beginning of the marathon of Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and instead of watching it, I'm reading articles and watching many videos of this 1984's marathon and recent interviews of Gabriela, and can't stop crying and being admirative.

Didn't heard about my compatriot and her calvary before today during the Paris 2024 women's Olympic marathon, when a commentator talked about it. And since 1 hour, instead of watching it, I'm reading articles of today or those last days - also read an article of then, written just after this 1984's marathon - and watching different videos (some with long interviews of Gabriela) and can't stop crying. That's so, so in the same time awful and beautiful, and that gives u so much respect for her, not quitting, and to see the huge crowd so supportive... I cry cry cry. Some would find it pathetic, or laugh about her... too bad for them, they r stupid, disrespectful and mean childish people.

Out of the dozen or so Olympics that I have watched, this was the most unforgettable moment of them all. Even more than the Miracle On Ice US Hockey Team in 1980 or any other event in International Olympics.

I was a distance runner, including the marathon, for more than 40 years. Since 1984 she has always been my inspiration; no one ever exemplified the spirit of the marathon better than her.

Her story is so inspiring and your comment in fact proves that. If I were you I’d try finding her, dropping her an email or message, may be even taking her autograph. Marathon runner for 40 years, no joke man! I bet she’d be surprised and amazed.

1984 - Todo un ejemplo deportivo a seguir 2024 - Che viej. porque no se preparo correctamente, quien la dejo competir ? Como cambian los tiempos. 🙃 1984 - A true sporting example to follow 2024 - Hey dude, why didn't she prepare properly? Who let her compete? How times change.

Unfassbarer Siegeswille, aber auch sehr riskant, hier nicht einzugreifen, um Schlimmes zu verhindern. Gott sei Dank ging das gut.

When the temperature is 26-7 or above, all I can do is sitting in front of my fan... so, to run a marathon under 32°C... is beyond my imagination.

It was 52c in my City before one month
@b.willisfederer87202 ай бұрын
@@tmmichael4365 1 month before this marathon? Where, in LA? Can't believe that! If it's somewhere else and not in 1984, what's the interest to tell me? I know 52 happens, and even way worse, but I'm talking of how it was there and then, to run 42 kilometers with also 95% of humidity, which is huge, awful, makes u suffocate, so, added to 32°C, it's the kind of condition making me barely able to walk 10 meters, so, to run 42 000 meters... lol, I'd rather die.

For me this is the worst of what humanity has to offer. The will to win from other people, to not accept help because it is against the rules, the cheering for someone who is destroying her body. This makes me sick to the stomach. Life is not about individual winning, it is not about following the rules, life is not about setting goals and getting there. Life is like a dance, to value the life you are given. To be in the here and now. To accept and give help, to break rules, to let go of goals, because you realise the importance of loving yourself and others. Life is about knowing when to quit because you destroy the things you love.

"Inspirational"? You mean this _inspires_ people to ignore the biological needs of their bodies so as to serve the crowd, the applause, the ego, the paymaster? No. No-one should be inspired to do that.

This was kind of cruel to watch. And though I know the Olympics are about pushing your own limits, it shouldn't encourage these unhealthy situations. It's like watching an animal that is run over trying to make it to the other side of the road.
