I've heard Hungarian described as many things: unreasonably hard to learn, German but less ambitious, an amalgamation of k and ch sounds. But sim speak. That is a first. I cant say I'm mad about it either. It was pretty funny XD

Actually Hungarian are not German. They are not Slavics either. Also hungarian is one of the hardest language in the world right after all east asians languages (and maybe polish, sometimes I see polish first, sometimes hungarian, it's confusing, so for now let's call it the hardest) so I am not surprised to be considered hard to learn.

@@Ieatmychildren I'm aware that Hungarian isn't German, nor is it a Germanic language, that comment refers to the fact the both languages like to use agglutination, though German makes use of compound words more. So while german puts a lot of words together to make new ones, or change the meaning (ex. die Großeltern - groß + eltern). Hungarian, instead of putting a bunch of words together to make a new word, take one (or more) word and add a bunch a suffixes and/or prefixes (ex. szerencsétlenség - szerencse + -t + -len + -ség). So when this person told me that Hungarian is German but less ambitious (lazier) this is what they were referring to. Hungarian is commonly referred to as a Uralic language, specifically Finno-Ugric, and most similar to languages like Finnish. (Though its exact origins are still debated) And yes I know it's a hard language to learn for those unfamiliar with this type of language, I'm not sure what your point was there? I was just listing the ways I've heard it referred to

In Hungarian, recruitment into the army transferred over as "koszt and kvártély" with koszt meaning food. In reality, the Austrian officers didn't talk about the mercenary benefits, but of costs of food and placement (kvártély is quartier, quarter). Sparhelt has become a Hungarian word from German to mean a stove in the summer kitchen, when the original pretty simply implies it's a spare stove, a Sparherd. Though my personal favorite is gentry, which came to mean a very poor Hungarian noble who pretends to be way richer than they actually are (in literature this is depicted by having a new coat be scribbled on with chalk to tell people to move on, but when it's worn again, the chalk traces are explained away as that being a new coat sullied in transport) so imagine my surprise when I learned it's supposed to mean the social upward mobility of a formerly dilapidated neighborhood. Today, in Russian the term nuvorichi comes from the French nouveau riche, meant to describe post-1968 non-noble rich French people, but it got perverted to describe loud and brazing Russians who lack style.
