I was back at Knole Park doing a video for my other channel and of course I had to revisit the possible tree candidates for the Beatles 1967 music video to Strawberry Fields.
One of these trees has to be the real tree.

Bravo! That's definitely the tree Tudor. I never noticed in the Strawberry Fields video how "bumpy" the ground was/is. But the ground around that 3rd tree is definitely bumpy just like in the video. Well done!

100% agree! Nailed it!! Background topography matches. The road, the gentle rise up toward the camera all add up. Also the distant hills you mentioned. Even the shallow valley in the background (visible in video between the upright piano and tree) lines up. It would be great if the Google map pin could be relocated to this spot instead (or at least mark all 3 candidates if necessary). Also if the NationalTrust could update any of their information and maybe plaque the location in future. It would be wonderful to one day have consensus on this stuff. Maybe you should contact Mark Lewishon and other Beatles historians and see what they think.

I totally agree. I was divided once someone suggested stump #2 (the one Google has pinned) but on that day I did the video I was also shooting for my photography vlog and walked down to that valley where the deer were - and suddenly it clicked into place.

Hey Tudor, I went to Knole Park yesterday and I agree it's tree number 3, no way its the top one, the background is wrong i spoke to a groundsman who said the tree was still standing down by the ponds I told him we know the tree isn't there anymore, he said he's told so many different things so he was no use, on the subject of the the stump not being thick enough I think rhe stump was thicker but some of it was stripped away when the tree was felled, what clinched it for me searching online I found a pic them standing and a mini is on the road behind then (right inline with ringos left ear) and you can see the dirt track behind them and the road not very far-away at all, lovely place, bit blowey though lol keep up the good work

For me it certainly looks like the right tree. The background seems right, with the small road and the hills in the distance. The problem of course is that a park can change quite a lot in fiftyseven years, but the road and the hills most likely haven't changed.

Yep the immediate landscape would have changed (no golf course in ‘67 for instance) but the background landscape is pretty much the same barring the growth of trees perhaps?

Spot on again, I'm convinced its no.3. The landscape behind with those main trees plus the outline of the North Downs, and the little road, all point to it. Btw along the high st, about 10 mins walk theres the shop where John bought the Mr Kite picture. Now an estate agent.

I think you are correct in tree/stump #3. The background landscape simply is a perfect match. I absolutely LOVE your passion for doing this Tudor. You were very kind to answer a question about Hogg Hill for my upcoming and first visit to England. I could spend a week just exploring the sites you have so wonderfully shared, but I am bringing my wife, daughter, niece and sister in-law along and cannot be so selfish as to follow my desires alone.....Still, I hope to visit some of these locations in my travels when in London. I've been very blessed with running into some very important Beatle "people" and family over the decades. I never wanted to "track them down" and disturb them, yet I have had some important names simply fall into "my lap" so to speak. Is there a way to communicate with you outside of this platform? I don't mind using KZbin to communicate, but did not know if it best to get "advice" on my upcoming trip here. Cheers! Larry

Tudor, thank you for your careful investigation, which is invaluable to us Beatle followers. Based on your video, I agree that the 3rd tree looks like the one as the landscape around and behind looks correct. For example, the small valley in the park behind appears in both the Beatles and your video. I’ve seen a challenge that the stump looks too small. Maybe it could be estimated from the Strawberry Fields video by scaling off the Beatles themselves, assuming them to be average sized 25-ish year old men, and then measuring the stump. I might do that, to save you another trip.

The Tree number three seems in the right place but there are some open questions: the trunk is too small and furthermore the tree was already dead when Strawberry Field forever video was shot. Dead trees tend to hollow out over time so the stump number two would be a better match as it is quite large and hollow within the stump. I believe this interesting search is not closed yet.

Yeah the hollow tree (#2) has that element in its favour. And of course it is well documented that the tree used in the filming was already dead/dying.

This is what's bugging me too. Tree #3 absolutely feels in the right place. It has the track behind it, the road behind that and the little hills behind the road. It all makes sense except that the stump seems too small.

Definitely tree three. I'll try to attach a screen grab but, if that doesn't work, look at the similarity of the camera-facing ground level semi-circular feature and the crack just above it. It's identical.

I love your videos, I agree, with you, tree location 3 makes the most sense. I reviewed Google Earth, and based on the pathway, shrub tree line in the distance and the old pine in the distance from the videos/photos, this makes the most sense. 51°15'55.58"N 0°12'44.46"E this was my guess, I'm from the US so I cannot verify. it's all very interesting.

I always knew that, sadly the tree was cut downs. Didn't take in consideration that the tree stump could be still there. I always feel sad to see tree being cut down, especially in open spaces like that; I get the madness and hysteria of health & safety regulations that consider tree in parks "dangerous", but I don't understand whatever the reason to cut down a tree in a field could possibly be. I remember making fun of my neighbour that wanted the tree on my front garden either cut down of "trimmed" on his side because "it was ruining the view"; I made them notice that that in front of the house there was the road, with cars! St*pid old people!

Just watched a video called strawberry fields promo filming sessions on KZbin. Take a look... Half way through there are snippets of the scenery behind Ringo and john. The wall can be seen, and the trees located by the catering area on the day 👍

Having visited in Nov ‘23 - with the help of Tudor’s last video - I can add that the #3 stump appears to have been sheared off on one side (the “piano” side) at some point, possibly when the dead tree was felled, creating a seemingly smaller footprint. You may be able to tell this from the videos, where the hollowed-out portion appears off-centre, when it would actually be centred if the sheared-off portion of the stump was still there. If you visit Knole Park armed with some of the photos and footage of the video shoot that are available on the web, it becomes pretty clear that #3 is the one.

The stump isn't there it would now be on the golf course. Do comparisons for the whole video and note the position of the road

You might be right but that stump I stood in is for me perfectly positioned. I’m going to have to do some thorough investigation one day based on all the stills images available online. I could Write to the McCartney or Starr teams and ask them to ask Paul or Ringo - but I wonder if they’d remember!
