Your analyses of the various P&P characters are very enjoyable. I like the way Jane Austen wrote realistically about Lydia's situation rather than going down the melodramatic path most novelists would have taken. The idea that Mr Bennet might fight a duel over his daughter's honour is dismissed as ridiculous; the notion that Lydia might be 'thrown on the town' - i.e. rejected by her family and forced into a life of prostitution - is also dismissed as it is assumed that between Mr Bennet and the Gardiners some sort of provision will be made for her if they can only find her. Finally, she learns no lesson from her misadventure and returns home more confident and annoying than ever.

As far as Elizabeth "scowling" at Mr. Darcy, I don't believe she's scowling at Mr. Darcy, but instead it's betraying her embarrassment at what her mother's conversation regarding Lydia's wedding to Wyckham. Almost a mirror scene when at Netherfield, her mother takes exception with Darcy about his opinon on country living.

My favorite quote regarding Lydia from the 1995 BBC mini-series comes from Mr. Bennett. "Our life holds few distinctions, Mrs. Bennet, but I think we may safely boast that here sit two of the silliest girls in the country."

'Superficial displays of learning over genuine wit and understanding'. A perfect summary of Mary Bennet's character. I don't understand the modern fashion for calling Mary 'neurodiverse' or otherwise excusing her foolish behaviour when she is clearly a caricature of bluestocking pretentiousness.
@Ponto-zv9vf4 күн бұрын
I am sure in one of the adaptations, Mary Bennet was missing. Mr. Bennet includes Mary in the 3 silly sisters, but I think she is not as silly as he says compared to Kitty, who coughs or cries at lot, and Lydia, where a cucumber dressed in regimentals would be frightfully good looking. I quite like Mary, in every large family there is one person who gets ignored or shut off in conversations.

Wickham only loved himself, a very narcissistic man. Lydia loved any man with a uniform. It is hard to understand that a young woman can be so oblivious to social norms and scandals, even a 15 year old.
@aguitargirl3 күн бұрын
Mrs. Bennett was oblivious to social norms and scandals. When informed of Lydia's impending nuptials, she found it "nonsense" that she should be married anywhere but Longbourne church where all her friends could see her. Even after it is pointed out that Lydia was living in London with Mr. Wickham, and if she should return home, unmarried still. She replies with "I suppose it must be if you put it like that."

The Silver Beatles. I am stuck in the 1960s as far as music is concerned. Now, I just watched Pride and Prejudice 1980, and Mr. Collins in that show did dance oddly, and he did check over Longbourn picking up objects and looking at the manufacturers marks. It is interesting the different takes on Pride and Prejudice. I think the 1995 version is the best as far as the acting and the choice of actors, some of the others, the actors don't look right, though I have learnt things about the characters in the other productions. For example that Charlotte Lucas being 27 years old.

He was both pompous sycophant, but still wanted to do something the real historical Bennets would have cherished: asked one of the five daughters (that were unlikely to marry well or at all because of their lousy dowries) to marry him, keeping the house in the family. He could have simply continued his father's grudge and waited for Mr. Bennet to die and promptly kicked the women out of the house, but he chose not to because both sides could profit from the situation.

15:28 I think Lizzie was trying to figure out why Darcy is bringing Bingly back to the picture, because he so decidedly and unapologetically separated Jane and Bingly not long ago. I think Lizzie might be a little bit afraid for Jane to have her heart broken again

It is interesting to look around the various scenes to see what the other characters are doing. I spend so much time watching the main characters do their thing that taking time to look at other characters gives new perspectives and insights to the film. In the scene where Darcy ask Lizzie if he can introduce her to his sister, not only does Lizzie reply that she would be happy to make her acquaintance, she gives a little nod when he thanks her. I had never seen that before.
@TudorSmith7 күн бұрын
I do think it brings the back stories more to life.
@hat91727 күн бұрын
My interpretation is that Lizzie is feeling slightly awkward in the conversation about meeting Georgiana. I read her look as a combination of feeling a sort of awkward guilt and confusion. By this point she knows that she was wrong to put so much weight on Wickham's account of Darcy and realises that there was another side to the story. On top of that she probably didn't expect to meet him again and after the words they had had and their previous parting was no doubt discombobulated by his warm and charming manner. She rejected him quite forcefully and here he is inexplicably drawing her into his familial circle. I suspect a step that goes beyond the requirements of social courtesy for that time.
@bronte8268 күн бұрын
I agree with a lot of what you pick up, and your interpretation in many of the scenes, I've had to remind myself, comes from a male point of view. It may different than I see, but as a female, I know I see it in a different light.

can't imagine why a miniseries would be able to get more into character development than films do. It's almost like they're different forms of storytelling.
@Ponto-zv9vf4 күн бұрын
It is the length of time devoted to the story and characters. In a film you have to keep the audience's attention over 120 minutes. Mini series go on for hours over all.

I love David Bamber's portrayal. Most other filmed versions I've seen have pretty good Mr Collins. The only one I'd take issue with is the Mr Collins in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Matt Smith) - it's just wrong when your Mr C is sexier than your Mr Darcy 🤣🤣🤣

It is so great having a person who analyses things. Reading the books of Austin many times if there is a film about it I always look for the expressions . In the case of pride and prejudice who is my favor. The adaptation from the book to the 1995 version is wonderful and also the actors who with their expressions bring out how Austin describes them all. At 74 cannot have enough of it I always read the book again first then I watch the film again. Over the years more and more details come to the front specially how society was in that era.

One nice touch in the TV adaptation was the scene where Elizabeth pleads a headache and begs off going to Rosings after the calamitous proposal from Mr. Darcy. Mr. Collins is making one of his long speeches to her, and when Charlotte reminds him that they're running late, he rushes them out of the house and we can hear his voice rising as he berates her. He's not only a pompous fool, he's bad-tempered as well! Charlotte's bought her security at a high price, and I think it's going to take a lot of time in her garden and drawing room to compensate.
@Ponto-zv9vf5 күн бұрын
Yes, having to do what old Lady Catherine dictated. Charlotte didn't have the opportunities due to her class living in a small town with a father in trade, and having a few brothers and sisters. Mr. Collins gave her what she desired, and eventually being Mistress of Longbourn, if Mr. Collins survives and she has a son.
