I just bought this drum! I have wanted a handpan drum for several years now, but every time I looked, I couldn't find anything less than about $800, which is above my current budget. Tongue drums were also intriguing to me. So when I came across this handpan/tongue hybrid on cyber Monday on sale I decided to chance it. There were a few reviews that worried me, but I decided these folks didn't know anything about hand drums. It was worth every penny of the $150 I spent. The sound is clear and bright. Playing with your hands will give you a more muted, "tribal" sort of sound. Playing with the mallets (at least until you get some practice in) can give you quick precise notes and can get huge vibration and overtones going. It can get loud! Thanks for your awesome video and tips and tricks! I wish I had seen this video before purchasing, I would have put your code in. :)

Another great intro video, Molly. I just started seeing theses and was curious, so very happy about your timing. 1 question: is the underside solid like the guda or does it have a sound hole?
@MusicalMollyKhan

The underside is solid, so no magnets unfortunately! I'm actually not sure if it is magnetic, I'll have to test that out now 😅

Hello Molly the handpan is an instrument that reaches inside of me as a drummer. It is the perfect example of how to bring rhythm and harmony together. I used your link and purchased this drum today, thank you for your feedback on these.

I just found your channel and I’m loving your videos! I’m discovering all kinds of instruments I never even knew existed, haha. I was wondering if you could do a video on the pros and cons of the double steel tongue drums vs. the standard steel tongue drums. I’m not sure which one I like better. Thanks for all you do and I’m wishing you lots of success :)

How would you compare one of these with them 14" tongue drums? I'm torn between them. These look like the resonate a bit better but I do like the idea of the tongue drum having more notes.

Hi, thanks for reviewing this drum. I am very interested in handpan/tongue drums. I'd love to get started in learning how to play one. Unfortunately the handpans are out of my price range but I love the size and sound of them. Would you consider this 14" drum the closest thing to a handpan for under $200? Thanks for your input.
@MusicalMollyKhan
@MusicalMollyKhan 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I think for under $200 this is probably the closest you're going to get. If you're willing to spend 500-600 you can get a very entry level handpan from Panniverse, or a used Rav Vast which have a really handpan like sound 😊
@freerobotsex
@freerobotsex 3 жыл бұрын
Thx for the response. I'd love to get a used Rav Vast. Any recommendations on the best place to look..Ebay? I'd think they'd hold their value pretty well so probably still way out of my price range.

I have just purchased this drum. I am a bit confused by the dangling bits of nylon that are hanging off the edge. Can you tell me if they're meant to be here. They are obviously part of the outer design but yours does not appear to have bits that are not attached

Nice video! Love the sound of this class of instruments and have been wanting to get one for a while. I stumbled upon this video while trying to find something that explains the difference between the handpan ("hang") and the tank drum / tongue drum. Is there really a difference or why is there such a huge price difference? This one on Amazon, for instance, is close to $800 - "2021 New Handpan Drum Instrument In D Minor 10 Notes 22 Inches"D3/A3 Bb3 C4 D4 E4 F4 G4 A4" Steel..." I have seen some on Sweetwater (Sela Harmony...) that cost even about $2K. Trying to understand the essential differences and decide which one to get. Could you help?
@MusicalMollyKhan
@MusicalMollyKhan 3 жыл бұрын
That is a great question! The difference primarily lies in the construction of the drums and how the sound is produced. On tongue drums, slits are cut into the metal which aren't too difficult to tune (just remove more material on either the tongue or the slits). The metal is generally thicker and stronger than handpans, so they go out of tune much less frequently, but also the slits don't vibrate as freely. Handpans are made from very thin metal that has to be carefully hammered into tune at each note's location - there are no cuts in the pan, just shaped metal. They are generally also tuned in a 3-fold manner, with a fundamental, 5th and octave tuned into each tone field. This is a super complicated process! It also makes handpans more fragile and more prone to going out of tune. But the metal vibrates very easily and produces an ethereal sound 😊
@ghorse2000

@@MusicalMollyKhan My goodness, that is so eloquently described! I wouldn't be surprised if you wrote a dissertation and earned a PhD on this thing! But this puts me in a dilemma now as to which one to get. I saw a movie that had the protagonist playing handpan frequently, and the sound produced just by that one instrument put me in a trance or something - maybe in part due to the D minor key, now that I think of it! So when it goes out of tune, what do you do - take it to a handpan mechanic (like we take a guitar to a luthier)? Same question for tongue drum, if you don't mind. I am guessing the weather (humidity) may also play a role in this. Material-wise, I am seeing some tongue drums made of copper as well, but handpans made of stainless steel only - is that right?

@MusicalMollyKhan
@MusicalMollyKhan 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! It all depends on your budget and what you want to play. For meditation or relaxation, pentatonic drums are easier. For playing songs, you will probably want a drum in a major scale with lots of notes. Budget makes a big difference as well! Let me know what you're looking for and I can make some recommendations 😊

Thank you! It's definitely not as resonant as the ding on a handpan, but it is more resonant than the sound in the video gives it credit for. If that makes sense 😅
