RE: Development classes: There was a cherub that used to attend my sailing club's regattas and it always looked totally spectacular while racing. Year after year it was a treat to watch downhill on the course. I remember seeing the Asymmetric for the first time and the thing looking like a speedboat down wind. DEV classes are cool because they push forward the tech. It's an unfair class to race in but on the other hand a second hand boat will probably still be the fastest boat your sailing club has ever seen. I sailed a Laser 4000 for a while. It was like riding a racing Clydesdale. Insanely powerful but it took a lot to get to go properly fast. That boat showed me what real performance sailing was. In a big blow it could go seriously fast downwind and be perfectly balanced. It could plane upwind and be quite manageable too. We used to go out in insane winds and spend an hour sailing upwind then come back in 5 or 10 minutes. The trick to handling it upwind was just to back off to manageable heel with the crew fully extended and the helm fully hiked then back off in the gusts and point up in the lulls just like sailing the boat off the wind. As long as you kept it planing the pressure on the rig was managed and there was no problem. If you ever got to displacement speeds you had a problem. Worse thing you could try was feathering it close to the wind. Crazy bad idea. Heavy boat with very big sail area. F=MA : A=F/M A is very small because F is high but M is very high too. Feathering and other very agile strategies work with light boats but heavier boats need a stable amount of force and Ideally to plane.

Incredibly diplomatic and thorough description of foiling and sailing a developmental class as is... Well done

Extremely interesting video! It surely is very technical but it is very well done and Nathan is certainly the best person possible to explain the nuts and bolts of those catamarans.

Interesting to see that the rudder boxes are almost identical to the ones we made in the early 1980s. Progress :-)

Reverse the J outwards and swap port and starboard. More stability. What angle incidence rear foils? 0⁰?

I hope the higher powers listen to you and open this up to more development. Like L-boards and mounting from underneath. I'm not in the sport but have sailed recreational cats for 20 years. This is the nature of technology and advancement. Don't regulate advancement.

our cat did 33 knots 40 years ago. Same size, but no verbally expansive, expensive wankers on board. They are killing the sport.

Nice free market principles there. Let the rich do the developing and allow the not so rich to benefit.
