Beautiful 151 year old Forgotten House Along the Coast of South Carolina

This house was built in 1871 for a large farm after the civil war. It’s incredible too think how many generations grew up in this place and now it sits with huge holes in the floors and roof. It suffered severe roof damage after hurricane Matthew in 2016 ripped parts of the metal roof up. Sadly it’s days are numbered and most likely will be torn down in the next year or so. I’m very glad I was able to save it on film atleast and I hope they make sure there’s no bats inside when it’s demolished. Too cute. Thank you for watching! Hope you enjoy! I am a South Carolinian. I hope when they tear the house down they preserve that very old Live oak. If you have never seen the Angel Oak on John's Island, go see it. It is estimated to be 300 to 400 years old. This tree also needs to be preserved.

I grew up in an old house and lived right by a park. Needless to say, we had lots of bats in our house over the years! They are so scary when they are in flight! It's amazing how incredibly tiny they are when their wings aren't spread!

Yep, that was beadboard. All those wooden floorboards! I hope it isn't just leveled and thrown away. I hope someone saves all that wood to be repurposed. Back when this place was built, they had parlors that were seldom used except for entertaining company. More than likely that's what the downstairs bathroom used to be, before the 'modern' for that time water closet was just too irresistible! The busy road was likely just a dusty wagon/horse trail when this was built, and probably went in two directions, away from home and back home. In the evening I could've been found reading by oil lamp on the upstairs porch, lemonade at my side and savoring the scent of Magnolia blossoms in the night air, while the Cicadas sang their hot weather song... Yep, I was born 150 years too late, much thanks Kappy!

The upstairs porch would have been amazing back in its day! A couple comfortable chairs, a cold drink after a long day waiting for the sun to go down just enjoying your home and the cool evening air bug free because its screened...sounds great!

Great find kappy!! What a beauty!!!I loved that room with six windows in it,that's as many as I have in my whole apt!! It's a shame that the new houses aren't built with the charm and coziness that these old houses have, including these new "foldable" houses? That front entrance fireplace must have really kept the house warm!! Since there are no fireplaces, the rooms to the right of the staircase and the second story were probably an addition, most likely in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s as there are closets in each bedroom. This would explain the fireplace in the first floor hallway.

Wow that house is pretty untouched from its original build. Plumbing and electric were added but never upgraded after the initial installation. The clapboard walls (I think) look as though they were only painted once or twice. Amazing find! Thanks for showing us this beautiful old house. The 3 hearth fireplace is really unique and interesting. There was no dedicated kitchen either, must have had a separate summer kitchen at some time. I love the old houses with the sleeping porches. We still have some old house around here that have them. Old houses have character and heart.

What a shame no one made his into a restaurant! The upstairs porch could have been a tea room for those just wanting coffee, tea, and dessert. A fireplace in the entry! Wait till you see a Victorian inglenook, with carving, waindcotting, built in benches, and an ornate fireplace in the front hall! Thanks, and love to you and Ruby! 🌿

This home made me want to cry 😰 It was such a beautiful property once upon a time!!! Sooo very sad that it had been allowed to deteriorate to the destroyed level that it is in today 😢 obviously the upstairs bathroom was not an original, as all of the windows in that room would not allow for any privacy!!! Sooo very sad that the owners of the land were not able to preserve this amazing original property & modernize, update & renovate it to it’s original glory!!! The porches, fireplaces, wooden covered walls, were amazing & sooo very sad that they couldn’t be preserved 😔 The farm store could have been saved & restored as a garage, guest quarters or man cave👍 The tree’s were gorgeous!!! Thank you for sharing this wonderful adventure with us Kappy! I truly loved it ❤️❤️❤️ You can also share with us, all of the fabulous old homes that you have shown us glimpses of, at the end of this video…I would love to see them💕❤️

That house has a dog trot down the center to circulate air in the summer with a fireplace for winter. Never seen one like that. Those bats are a lot more polite than the usual vultures you encounter....😄 I hope they escape the demolition. Hopefully they won't burn it down so the bats will at least have a chance to escape.

Most of the bats in North America are an endangered species it that is the case with these bats then the authorities can stop this old house from being torn down.

Just yesterday in my area they were talking about certain bats that are endangered. Funny he mentioned 'bathouse' I had stated if I owned my own home I would put one of these houses up for the bats. 🦇

Speaking of fireplaces in unusual locations, we actually had a fireplace in the bathroom in my old farmhouse growing up! It was a great way to warm our tushes as the ten of us kids brushed our teeth in the morning. One day one of our hogs fell into our water well, unbeknownst to us, and it must have been there for quite a while before Papa finally discovered the bones. In the meantime we all came down with a mean case of cholera. You should have seen the state of that old bathroom after all 12 of us family members were done with it. Thank goodness we had that fireplace in there to keep us warm because we must have spent three solid days in there!

I feel so fortunate to have found your channel. I will go down the Urban Exploring rabbit hole but then I need to take a break for a few days. I try to imagine these homes in their early days, full of families and I get sad. Plus, the first house I ever lived in when I was a kid was very old and I can remember the coal furnace remnants and we had a lead frosted glass front door...so many things I see in your videos that I wish I had been old enough to appreciate when I lived there. 13:37 The pipe running up the middle on the side of the house is for carbide gas lighting. You could probably find what's left of the old carbide powder to acetylene generator in the ground next to the house. This type of lighting was popular from the 1870's-early 1900's for rural areas until electricity came along.

I lived in a house in Missouri that was built in 1947 and was panalled entirely in beadboard. It was/is a shotgun house; parlour, bedroom and kitchen all in a row with no internal doors. The bathroom had a curtain as a door.

These houses were beautiful in their day. There was a lot of hard work went into building these house. It took a lot of manual labor to craft and build these houses . They were very cold and drafty in the winter and hot in the summer. I am sure all the windows in the rooms were there for ventilation in the summer. Its still sad to see these houses gone to the ruins.

I kinda like the way that wood weathered on the outside of the house. I love the floors too. That wall textures interesting. The beadboard you called it. Buuuut, I don't do bats. Glad you left him there. ha ha. Gad. A whole family of bats. Step away folks. I swear to God a bat was flying behind you into that fireplace. Maybe just a trick of the light. Such a cool place.

I can't understand why there is a new mailbox out front. I suppose maybe that is in anticipation of a new house going up? I am glad I went in this place even though it was a bit of a struggle to get in there. I have found a few other houses that have a fireplace in the foyer and I always thought that was such a nice thing to do for those who might be visiting.I found a bat, too, but I am glad you found bat(s) and not me!

The type of wood walls inside is called "tongue and grove" which was common interior finishing for homes of that time era. Did not need a lot of insulation behind it because no gaps. Lower lop of one narrow slat fit up into a groove on the lower edge of the slat to go above. In other words, each slat had a slotted top and a grooved bottom. Some were erected vertically instead of horrizontally.

Whenever I see these houses with bead board ceilings and walls and being a wood person I wonder how beautiful that wood would have looked unpainted and just varnished . You could see how it looked on the inside of the closets. It probably would have made the house dark inside but still ?

You know with the lack of anything carved and proximity to road I wonder if that was an old way stop aka hotel kinda of in horse and buggy days. That would make the store an old carriage house then. Everything in that house was sturdy and basic and rooms upstairs similar and that would make fireplace in hallway make sense then as it took the chill off when you came in and took off your outerwear.
